(CNN) The Justice Department has filed a civil lawsuit seeking a court order requiring that casino mogul Steve Wynn register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act. The complaint alleges that Wynn was working as an agent on behalf of the People's Republic of China and a former PRC official, Sun Lijun. "Specifically, at the request of Sun, and on behalf of the PRC, the Defendant conveyed to former President Donald J. Trump and his Administration ('the Trump Administration') the PRC's request to remove from the country a PRC national who had sought political asylum in the United States," the complaint, filed Tuesday in DC federal court, says. "In so doing, from at least June 2017 through at least August 2017, the Defendant acted as an agent for foreign principals Sun and the PRC and engaged in political activities on their behalf in the United States." London (CNN Business) West Texas Intermediate crude, the reference point for US oil prices, usually trades at a discount of a few dollars to Brent crude, the global benchmark. But this morning, the near-term futures contracts for WTI and Brent are both roughly $115 per barrel — an indication of how the market has been scrambled by the pandemic and the war in Ukraine ahead of the busy summer driving season. "This is a significant development in my opinion," Jeffrey Halley, a senior market analyst at Oanda, told clients on Tuesday. Quick rewind: Oil prices have jumped over the past week. Both WTI and Brent are trading near two-month highs. The national average for regular gas in the United States hit a fresh record of $4.52 a gallon on … [Read more...] about American oil is usually a cheaper option. Not anymore
India offered to help fix the global food crisis. Here’s why it backtracked
New Delhi (CNN Business) A month ago, as Russia's war in Ukraine pushed the world to the brink of a food crisis, India's prime minister Narendra Modi offered to help countries facing shortages. "We already have enough food for our people but our farmers seem to have made arrangements to feed the world," Modi said in April. "We are ready to send the relief from tomorrow itself." The world's second biggest producer of wheat after China was already walking the talk. In the 12 months to March, India cashed in on soaring global prices, exporting a record 7 million metric tons of the grain. That was up more than 250% on the previous year's volumes. It had also set record export targets for the coming year. Now, those lofty goals have been abandoned and wheat exports banned as life-threatening heat waves in South Asia stunt output and push local prices to record highs. India bans wheat exports as heat wave hurts crop, … [Read more...] about India offered to help fix the global food crisis. Here’s why it backtracked

London (CNN Business) Among the many silly, mind-numbing, agenda-pushing exchanges happening on Twitter at any given moment, the one playing out between the President of the United States and the world's second-richest person stands out for both its dullness and its deliberate oversimplification. Bezos, founder of Amazon, an absurdly wealthy corporation, took issue with that. He fired off a reply, saying that linking corporate taxes to inflation is "just misdirection." The White House pushed back, then Bezos pushed back again . Read More In short, Bezos believes federal stimulus payments caused inflation. Biden says corporate greed is the culprit. … [Read more...] about Jeff Bezos and Joe Biden are having the stupidest fight ever

(REUTERS/David Swanson) A California prosecutor on Tuesday said he would not rule out seeking the death penalty against a Chinese-American man who harbored anti-Taiwanese sentiment and opened fire at a church banquet, an attack that killed one and wounded five others. The suspect, David Chou, 68, will face a single count of murder with a gun in connection with the Sunday attack, Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer told CNN. He also faces five counts of attempted murder and four counts of unlawful possession of an explosive. Spitzer said the gunman brought an arsenal of weaponry, including explosives, incendiary devices, and two semi-automatic weapons, to Geneva Presbyterian Church in Laguna Woods, California, where he targeted people gathering for a Taiwanese-American church banquet. “That suspect was ready to kill everybody in that church,” Spitzer said. … [Read more...] about Prosecutor won’t rule out death penalty for California church shooter
Analysts cut Mr DIY target price despite expectation of better quarters ahead
- A + A KUALA LUMPUR (May 17): No analysts who track Mr DIY Group (M) Bhd have advised clients to sell the stock, although the home improvement retailer's latest quarterly earnings came in below some expectations. Nonetheless, Mr DIY came under selling pressure on Tuesday. It fell 16 sen or 4.51% to RM3.39. Some attributed the selling to investors' reaction to the 19.5% drop in its net profit for the first quarter ended March 31, 2022 (1QFY22) to RM100.5 million from RM124.79 million a year ago, due to higher expenses as it opened more stores. Quarterly revenue, however, climbed 4.02% to RM905.16 million from RM870.18 million a year ago, driven by contributions from new stores, the company said in a bourse filing. It declared an interim single tier dividend of 0.7 sen per share (approximately RM44 million), representing a payout ratio of 43.8%, despite earnings contraction. While analysts described the lower quarterly profit as an unexpected temporary … [Read more...] about Analysts cut Mr DIY target price despite expectation of better quarters ahead
