Police arrested a former Thai model for creating an online investment scam that stole over 100 million baht from victims. According to the Bangkok Post, Wetika Jaija was arrested in the San Sai district of Chiang Mai at a residential address. The 30 year old Wetika was charged with obtaining loans amounting to public cheating, entering false computer system data into a computer system and fraud. Police say she lured victims into investing in a Ponzi scheme and promised them a 100% return on their investments. She allegedly claimed she had won a world-class trading competition and posted photos of luxury cars and a house on her Facebook page. Initially, her promise was kept as victims received consistent dividends, but then she pulled out and disappeared. More suspects are now in Thai police custody in relation to the phone scam that duped unsuspecting elderly Americans out of 3 billion baht. According to the Bangkok Post, 20 people have been arrested- 15 Thais and five Indian nationals- for their involvement in a phone scam that preyed on Americans. Police say they raided places in the provinces of Rayong, Chon Buri, Surat Thani, and Roi Et. All five of the Indian suspects were men and 11 of the 15 Thais were women, according to Torsak Sukwimol, a deputy national police chief. Police say they seized 162 bank account books, 61 mobile phones, one pistol, two cars, land title deeds and other assets. The investigation started last year over the phone scams, with the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Secret Service informing Thai police of the suspected scam. Thailand to adopt stricter firearm controls amid rise in gun-related crimes
Thailand is adopting stricter firearm controls amid a rise in gun-related crimes. The Cabinet is set to draft a firearms act which deems all privately owned firearms and ammunition must be registered with a government agency. According to The Star, the draft act was approved on Tuesday. Government spokesperson Rachada Dhnadirek confirmed the news adding that the current measures in place are not effective enough.
