Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Porsche has set a new electric car lap record at the Nurburgring, beating the Tesla Model S Plaid by three seconds around the 12.92 mile circuit. A Taycan Turbo S driven by Porsche development driver Lars Kern completed a lap of the German track in 7min 33.3sec, beating tesla’s time of 7min 35.6sec, which was set last year. Porsche says the car was fitted with its new performance kit and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC), and aside from the mandatory roll cage and racing seats was a completely standard, street-legal car. The company also said how the Taycan Turbo S used to set the record weighs the same as a series production car, and an official was on hand to verify the new EV record. The performance kit includes 21-inch RS Spyder design wheels and street-approved Pirelli P Zero Corsa high-performance tires, which are now available as an option for Taycan customers. “Their tire compound is similar to that of … [Read more...] about Porsche Beats Tesla’s Nurburgring EV Record With Taycan Turbo S

Kia EV6 2022 UK Review: The Best Electric Vehicle Ever?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The EV revolution is really starting to shake up the “old order” of incumbent manufacturers. But one of the most surprising brands emerging from the upheaval as a winner is Kia. Alongside its parent company Hyundai , Kia has been producing very credible EVs based on existing internal combustion engine platforms for some years now. With the EV6, Kia is making a huge play for a seat at the table of pioneering, premium electric car manufacturers. Kia EV6: IONIQ 5’s Non-Identical Twin It's worth underlining right at the outset that the EV6 has a lot in common with the Hyundai IONIQ 5 , and there’s a good reason for that. The two cars share a platform, and the infotainment system plus dashboard display have a very close family resemblance. However, physically these two vehicles are quite different. Where the IONIQ 5 has gone for a “retro modern” look, from certain angles, the EV6 has a marked resemblance to the Jaguar I-Pace. … [Read more...] about Kia EV6 2022 UK Review: The Best Electric Vehicle Ever?
How Tesla Lost The Race For Affordable EVs To An Unexpected Rival
Sixteen years ago, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced his goal of building the first truly low-cost electric family car. Now General Motors has beaten him to it. IN August 2006, before Tesla had built its first electric car, Elon Musk published his first “ Master Plan ” for the company with a singular goal: transform the environmentally unfriendly auto industry into a friendly one by selling pricey electric cars that would underwrite the development of affordable ones. “When someone buys the Tesla Roadster sports car, they are actually helping pay for development of the low-cost family car,” Musk wrote. Tesla has since rolled out four models cheaper than the $98,000 Roadster it started with in 2008, but none have been priced affordably or achieved Musk’s often-repeated goal of becoming a true mass-market brand. Instead, the company has remained focused on cars with luxury prices: Teslas start at about $50,000 and their average selling price is $68,000, according to Kelley … [Read more...] about How Tesla Lost The Race For Affordable EVs To An Unexpected Rival
Ford CEO’s dig at Tesla as he talks about best-selling truck: ‘Take that Elon Musk’
Ford CEO Jim Farley and Tesla boss Elon Musk. Ford's fully-electric pickup truck F-150 hit the market in May and soon, the demand for it skyrocketed. CEO Jim Farley is proud of the accomplishment and wants to make sure rival companies know that. At an event on Wednesday, while announcing that his company was making a big investment in solar energy, Jim Farley took a dig at Tesla boss Elon Musk. He drew a comparison between the Ford truck and Tesla's -- its main electric vehicles rival-- delayed Cybertruck "We are really on a mission at Ford to lead an electric and digital revolution for many, not few," Farley said. "And I have to say the shining light for us at Ford is this beautiful Lightning made right down the road in Dearborn, right here in the state of Michigan, already the leader of all EV pickup trucks in our industry in the US." "Take that Elon Musk," the Ford CEO added. Close Musk's response to the comment? "Thanks, but I already have one." Tesla’s Next Major Competitor Could Be… Hyundai
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The rise of the EV is a disruptive moment in the auto industry. It could only have been instigated in its current form by a company outside the incumbent brands like Tesla. But other emerging players are clearly seeing EVs as an opportunity to rise up the rankings. The bulk of newcomers are likely to come from China, with a wealth of emerging Chinese brands like BYD, Xpeng, NIO and Geely aiming to seize their chance . But there’s another player with great potential to become a major player thanks to the shift to EVs: Hyundai. Japanese manufacturers Toyota and Nissan have been respected for quality for decades now, and Toyota was the most valuable car company in the world until Tesla’s exploding share price usurped it. Korean manufacturers Kia and Hyundai, however, haven’t managed to escape the rung below the Japanese, despite arguably producing cars that are just as good, and that are backed by incredible warranties, which … [Read more...] about Tesla’s Next Major Competitor Could Be… Hyundai

I n 2019, Amazon cofounded The Climate Pledge, a commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. Since then, the company’s carbon footprint has increased by nearly 40%. Amazon’s carbon footprint was 51.17 million metric tons in 2019 and grew to 71.54 million metric tons in 2021, according to the company’s sustainability report released this week . Amazon said the increase was driven by growth during the pandemic across both its consumer e-commerce and cloud businesses, which required building new facilities and expanding its transportation network. Attempting to deflect away from the total carbon footprint, the report suggested companies should also be judged on whether they are lowering “carbon intensity,” which is total carbon emissions … [Read more...] about Amazon’s Carbon Footprint Increases, How Tesla Lost The Affordable Electric Vehicle Race And Generac’s Home Microgrids
At Tesla’s Shareholder Meeting, Elon Musk Made a Surprising Revelation About Success
Like almost everything about the company, Tesla's annual shareholder meetings are, well, different. For one, people actually attend. Yes, I know, there are people who attend shareholder meetings for other public companies, but those people are usually there because they are paid to be there. They aren't loud, and they don't usually cheer when the CEO of the company takes the stage . Oh, and those meetings aren't usually held on a gigafactory floor. Tesla's annual meeting, on the other hand, is. And the room is usually full of Tesla owners who also happen to own Tesla stock because it affords them the privilege of yelling questions at Elon Musk . That is, after all, the reason they came. Yes, they get to vote on proposals, but if you've ever watched the livestream of one of these meetings, you don't get the sense the people who are there came to exercise a little shareholder democracy. They are there because they're superfans. The highlight, obviously, is … [Read more...] about At Tesla’s Shareholder Meeting, Elon Musk Made a Surprising Revelation About Success
CENS Nano: An Israeli Company Making Good Batteries Great
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin This is one in a series about the Israeli ClimateTech innovation ecosystem. Please read the introductory article to learn more about the wonderful Public-Private partnership ecosystem flourishing in Israel. Battery storage is an incredibly important piece in the puzzle of decarbonization. I have written about several different technologies for grid storage – using chemical or mechanical means to store renewable energy for timely release into the electrical grid. One class of storage technology I have not written much about in this column is portable storage – the kinds of batteries that allow you to carry a powerful mini-computer in your pocket or send a Tesla from zero to 60 lickety-split. The premier technology for portable storage is that of lithium-ion batteries. There are various lithium-ion chemistries tweaked for different use cases, but for the last 30 years or so, betting against lithium-ion has been … [Read more...] about CENS Nano: An Israeli Company Making Good Batteries Great
Sky-High Gas Prices Make Us All Want EVs, Right? Not So, Survey Says
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Good news seems hard to come by these days, so here’s a kernel of it, free of charge: Gas prices may finally, impossibly, remarkably be on the decline. Months of cringe-inducing trips to the gas station are fading into the rearview mirror, with AAA announcing this week that the price of a gallon of gas has now fallen every day since its peak on June 14 . How long and how far this decline continues remains to be seen, but the record prices at the pump were enough to force nearly two-thirds of consumers to change their driving habits or lifestyle since March, AAA says . We drove less, ran more errands at once, cut back on shopping and eating out, and put off major purchases and vacations to compensate. One thing we didn’t do? Buy more electric vehicles. Autolist.com conducted its annual Electric Vehicle Consumer Survey right in the middle of the surge in gas prices, and asked nearly 2,000 current car … [Read more...] about Sky-High Gas Prices Make Us All Want EVs, Right? Tesla Sells A Record-High Number Of China-Made Vehicles In June
(CTN News) – As the U.S. carmaker ramped up production which had been hit by Shanghai’s Covid-19 lockdown in June, Tesla achieved its highest monthly sales of Chinese-made vehicles since opening its Shanghai plant in 2019. The China Passenger Car Association reported that Tesla sold 78,906 China-made vehicles in June, including 968 for export. It sold 32,165 vehicles and exported 22,340 in May. Cui Dongshu, CPCA secretary-general, said Tesla also achieved the highest monthly output at its Shanghai plant in June. Tesla’s new factories in Berlin and Texas struggled to increase production after covid restrictions in Shanghai in the April-June quarter. Musk had urged staff to work harder after China’s zero-Covid lockdown caused deeper disruptions to output than he had anticipated at the end of the “very tough” quarter. Model 3s and Model Ys are produced at the Shanghai plant, which reopened on April 19. China’s passenger car sales rose 22% in June from a … [Read more...] about Tesla Sells A Record-High Number Of China-Made Vehicles In June
