Angelique S. Chengelis The Detroit News Published 5:14 PM EDT May 26, 2019 There are less than 100 days until the start of the college football season, so of course it’s time to start thinking about it. What better way than exploring some bold predictions. The crystal ball is cloudy and no one knows for sure what will happen this fall, except what’s on paper – Michigan plays all three rivals, Michigan State, Ohio State and Notre Dame, at home; first-year offensive coordinator Josh Gattis will introduce his "speed-in-space" concepts; and defensive coordinator Don Brown needs to find replacements for Devin Bush, Chase Winovich, Rashan Gary and David Long. Of course there’s still offseason workouts and preseason camp, but when have those little details stopped anyone from taking a stab at predicting what might happen? So here goes: 1. Nick Baumgardner Detroit Free Press Published 3:31 PM EDT Apr 11, 2019 Jim Harbaugh rattled off a few numbers last week to illustrate how close everything had been. When it comes to Michigan football's placekicking battle this spring, nothing's really changed. Jake Moody and Quinn Nordin are still having it out. And they will be for quite a while. More on U-M: Chris Partridge: Coaches leaving for Ohio State isn't OK "We'll let that crank for as long as it has to go," Michigan special teams coordinator Chris Partridge told reporters Thursday in Ann Arbor. "That's not a competition you ever cut off. You let that thing keep rolling." The situation is simple: Nordin, a fourth-year junior, entered last season as the starting kicker before going 3-for-7 during a stretch against Wisconsin, Michigan State and Penn State. Nordin, who was apparently ill before the team's November game against Indiana, was replaced by Moody — now a sophomore — who … [Read more...] about Michigan’s Jake Moody, Quinn Nordin will have lengthy kicker battle
Shawn Windsor Detroit Free Press Published 12:57 PM EDT Mar 27, 2019 They are out there, those Devils dressed in blue and white, haunting Tom Izzo’s dreams. Beat LSU this Friday night in D.C. and the spectre of Mike Krzyzewski hovers. Michigan State is 1-11 against Duke under Izzo. To get another chance, each must win in the Sweet 16. In any other year, in any other tournament, beating the Blue Devils to get to the Final Four would go down in the annals. And it may yet still — assuming MSU gets the chance in the first place. But in this year’s bracket, staring down those ghostly tormentors isn’t what unsettles. It’s the potential game after, in the semifinals, where — gasp! — the rivals down the road might await. [ Michigan State vs. LSU in Sweet 16: Scouting report, prediction ] It’s a matchup that Michigan fans would crave while MSU fans would dread. Not that beating U-M … [Read more...] about Michigan State wants to take down Duke. But beware of Michigan.
Chris Solari Detroit Free Press Published 7:45 PM EDT Mar 18, 2019 EAST LANSING — Tom Izzo wore his reading glasses to his press conference Monday to preview the NCAA tournament. So he was entirely prepared for the question about Michigan State’s No. 2 seed and had his talking points in order. “I’m gonna say this once and gonna say it only once today and then I’m moving on,” Izzo said as he read from his sheet. “In April I might have a lot more comments on it.” And off he went with his nuanced defense. The Hall of Fame coach’s biggest concern? The NCAA selection committee’s criteria in March in recent years has been “like a moving target, which I don’t understand.” And he wants to know the three or four main criteria each committee deems most important so he can “adhere to those and never say another word.” “It was years ago that (when) Syracuse didn’t get in, they talked about … [Read more...] about What Michigan State’s Tom Izzo thinks about the NCAA seeding process
Nick Baumgardner Detroit Free Press Published 2:25 PM EST Dec 21, 2018 Former Michigan football defensive lineman Aubrey Solomon is transferring to Tennessee. On Monday, U-M confirmed Solomon had put in a request for a transfer. By Friday, he'd confirmed his new destination. “Thank you Michigan professor’s for opening my mind, fans for being the foundation for the players & encouraging us good or bad, teammates for uplifting each other through adversity while still smiling knowing no matter where we go we will always & forever be a and of brothers,” Solomon wrote via Twitter. “And to Michigan football program & coaches for the opportunity. With that being said, I will be attending the University of Tennessee.” A former 5-star recruit in 2017, Solomon played in all 13 games as a true freshman, making 18 tackles (two for a loss). He was in position to compete for a starting job entering this season, though he began it as … [Read more...] about Michigan football: Aubrey Solomon transferring to Tennessee
