In Slauson & Co., Google Investor Ron Conway Is Betting On More Than Money

April 13, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin A couple of years ago, two old friends found themselves both in an unusual position: They were venture capitalists of color in a business that is dominated by white people. In 2021, Austin Clements and Ajay Relan formed their own firm, Slauson & Co., named for the famous thoroughfare in south L.A. It’s one of the highest-profile of many recently formed firms, initiatives and funds – many started in the wake of George Floyd’s murder — that aim to diversify entrepreneurship. The premise is that diverse venture capitalists will fund more diverse founders, who in turn, as they succeed, will create jobs and wealth in diverse communities. It’s a questionable premise in its ambition. Only a tiny fraction of startups in the United States, about 1%, receive venture capital. Even fewer succeed. And VC-backed winners tend to employ relatively few people, because part of the profitability they need to scale depends on keeping … [Read more...] about In Slauson & Co., Google Investor Ron Conway Is Betting On More Than Money

Zensar – A high risk bet for the patient investor

May 25, 2021 by www.moneycontrol.com

PRO Only Highlights - Quarterly performance largely backed by improved realisations - Medium-term triggers China plus and protectionist measures for tyre industry - Valuations not inexpensive; but improved medium-term outlook Zensar (CMP: Rs 283 Market Cap: Rs 6,383 crore) — the mid-sized IT company from the RPG stable — has ended a very difficult FY21 on a subdued note. This was in sharp contrast to the strength seen in its peers, as the year was marred by weakness in the retail vertical and the pandemic-led issues for its key hi-tech client. However, deal win was decent. The management change has ushered in a strategic rejig, with the company prioritising... … [Read more...] about Zensar – A high risk bet for the patient investor

Sorry, China. Most Americans Support Higher Prices On Your Imports.

April 24, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin An overwhelming number of U.S. registered voters say they support higher tariffs on goods imported from China. According to a poll released this week by Morning Consult, 73% of survey respondents said they support the U.S. government using trade remedies on China to protect U.S. industries and American workers with a similar high number — 71% — supporting the trade war tariffs imposed on $250 billion worth of China imports during the Trump administration. Even with inflation at levels not seen since the 1970s, American voters seem willing to force companies to import from elsewhere or make it locally instead. “I am not surprised by these numbers,” says Harsh Khurana, CEO of WeCultivate, a tech company funded in part by Mark Cuban , that works as a browser extension on Amazon AMZN to show consumers American-made products. “Tariffs hurt the American consumer more than they hurt China's manufacturing because the … [Read more...] about Sorry, China. Korea defense exports: more bang for the buck

The self-propelled K-9 Thunder howitzer on the move [JOINT PRESS CORPS] To understand the Korean defense industry, the self-propelled K-9 Thunder howitzer might be a good place to start. The tank-like vehicle is a key piece of equipment in Korea and a hit with foreign purchasers. It is generally rated as one of the top 5 self-propelled howitzers globally, putting up a good fight against German, Chinese and Russian models. What makes it especially attractive as an export is the price: it costs about a third of the German offering. About the same bang for fewer bucks. The 155-millimeter self-propelled howitzer has been a success since its introduction by Samsung Techwin in 1999. Hanwha Defense recently won a 2-trillion-won ($1.5 billion) contract from Egypt in February and a 930-billion-won deal from Australia. To make one K-9, 700 separate bulletproof steel plates are needed, which require six rounds of wielding. Big surfaces are done by robots, but the small parts … [Read more...] about Korea defense exports: more bang for the buck
