Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Dallas Mavericks have yet to sign forward/center Christian Wood to a contract extension, which is a bit eyebrow raising considering his play over the course of the season, as well as his contractual status. Wood will be an unrestricted free agent by the conclusion of the season, allowing him to sign anywhere without any level of compensation coming back to Dallas. This would be an eerily similar situation as the one Dallas found themselves in last offseason where Jalen Brunson left the team to sign with the New York Knicks. The Brunson situation was entirely avoidable, had Dallas signed him to a three-year contract in 2018 as opposed to four years. By signing him four, per CBA regulations, Brunson qualified for unrestricted free agency status given that he was a second-round selection. Had his contract expired after three seasons, he would have been a restricted free agent, and thus Dallas would have had more control … [Read more...] about How Much Patience Does Luka Dončić Have Left For The Mavericks?

On Thursday, two armed drug smugglers were killed in a clash with an army ranger patrol along the Thai-Myanmar border in Chiang Rai. At 7.15 p.m., the army’s Pha Muang Force reported seeing five to seven armed men with backpacks walking through a forest near Ban Huai Kra in Mae Fa Luang district. The army officers ordered the men to stop for a search, but they refused and began shooting, prompting the soldiers to fire back. The gunfight that ensued lasted about five minutes before the gang fled. There were no injuries among the soldiers. Officers took a defensive position in the area because it was getting dark after sunset. Officers inspected the scene on Friday and discovered the bodies of two of the smugglers who had been fatally shot. Over the past two days, I must have had 20 conversations with people anxious about the impacts of AI on their work and livelihoods. Of course, I might have been seeking out those conversations because, as an academic and contributor to several business publications, I am also anxious! Creators, artists, coaches, programmers, doctors, writers, experts, and thought leaders are grappling with the implications of generative AI such as ChatGPT , DALL-E , and other advanced AI products on their jobs, passions, and income. On the one hand, it may seem like a dream come true. You can benefit from AI helping you work faster. Perhaps, better. On the other hand: So does everyone else and their hamster. Especially since it seems that anyone can look like an expert and creator with the help of AI. It can, after all, write a job application good enough to be short-listed, pass portions of the U.S. medical licensing exam and the bar exam , produce code , text, and sellable art … [Read more...] about Does ChatGPT mean the end of ‘thought leaders’?
Adani group's stocks have nosedived after the Hindenburg report's release The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is looking into the details of banks' exposure to Adani group companies and has sought the present status of these loans, people familiar with the matter told Moneycontrol . The U.S. added 517,000 jobs in January, more than two and a half times what economists anticipated, as the unemployment rate nudged down to 3.4%, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported Friday. Economists had predicted that the nation would add roughly 187,000 jobs, and that the unemployment rate would nudge up to 3.6% from 3.5%, roughly where it has lingered for the past several months , The Wall Street Journal reported . Previously, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell had estimated that the unemployment rate would climb to roughly 4.6% by the end of 2023, as markets slowed in response to the Fed’s anti-inflationary campaign of interest rate hikes, in a Dec. 14 press conference . At 3.4%, the unemployment rate hit the lowest level since May 1969 , as “widespread” job growth, led by 128,000 jobs added in the leisure and hospitality sector, pushed January’s job growth past the 2022 year-long average of 401,000 jobs per month, according to the BLS. Government … [Read more...] about Jobs Market Runs Red Hot In January, But Economists Fear Downturn Is Coming
A record-setting number of Americans are pulling money from their 401(k) plans to cover emergency expenses, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday, citing data from major investment manager, Vanguard Group. The proportion of people who pulled from their 401(k) jumped by about one-third in 2022, to 2.8%, up from 2.1% in 2021 and 2% in the pre-pandemic era, according to the WSJ. Vanguard manages roughly 5 million accounts, so the total number of people making withdrawals climbed from roughly 100,000 to roughly 140,000 in 2022, as people both struggled with financial stress ranging from credit card debt to eviction. (RELATED: What Another Fed Interest Rate Hike Means For You) The increase may also be in part due to more lenient rules implemented in 2018 that eliminated the necessity of taking a 401(k) loan before a hardship distribution can be issued, the WSJ reported. Borrowers also no longer need to submit evidence of hardship before making a withdrawal, and make some … [Read more...] about More Americans Than Ever Before Are Dipping Into Their Retirement Savings Just To Make Ends Meet
Republican New York Rep. Nicole Malliotakis sparred with CNN anchor Poppy Harlow on Friday over removing Democratic Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar from the House Foreign Affairs Committee. The House of Representatives voted to remove Omar from the committee Thursday at the behest of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who also removed Democratic California Reps. Eric Swalwell and Adam Schiff from the House Intelligence Committee. Omar faced scrutiny in 2019 for suggesting that American Jews advocate for “allegiance to a foreign country” and that Israel purchased American support. Malliotakis, who also served on the Foreign Affair committee, said Omar held “very dangerous views” surrounding Israel, for blaming the U.S. for the catastrophe in Venezuela and for allegedly having “diminished” 9/11 and thus should not serve on that committee. “Congresswoman, to the first point you made in your objections of her, she did respond saying that ‘I was in no way equating terrorist organizations … [Read more...] about Rep. Two Republican members of Congress introduced a bill Wednesday that would prohibit nonresident aliens, companies and other entities associated with the Chinese government from buying agricultural land in the U.S. Washington Reps.
