House leadership may bring H.R. 6, the 21st Century Cures Act, to the floor after next week’s House recess. The bill doesn’t cure a thing, except, perhaps momentarily, the appetite of the federal leviathan to grow. H.R. 6 deepens the federal government’s involvement in medicine, a role that the Founding Fathers wisely left to the states and the people through the Tenth Amendment. The legislation is well-intentioned, but turns federalism on its head and spends a massive amount of money with dubious offsets. H.R. 6 is a 309 page bill that attempts to accomplish quite a bit. The bill’s goals include promoting personalized medicine, improving the clinical trials process, making the regulatory path clearer for medical apps, creating economic incentives for the development of drugs for rare diseases, improving, “the entire biomedical ecosystem ensuring the innovation infrastructure works as quickly and efficiently as possible.” Oh, it is also a “ jobs bill .” Somewhere in the … [Read more...] about The Century Cures Act Is A Needless Waste
Tax for working from home
Tired of the office? These jobs have the happiest remote workers right now
It’s no surprise that working from home has been popular for many workers, but it hasn’t been a win for every profession across the board. Glassdoor recently surveyed workers to determine how important remote work was to them as a benefit, and how employees across various levels of seniority and various occupations view their experiences working from home. In general, the survey found that the ability to work from home was among the top three benefits for more than two-thirds (68%) of the respondents. Remote work was only a few percentage points behind vacation and paid time off in popularity, which 71% of respondents found important, and health insurance, which was a top-three benefit for 69% of respondents. Working from home—or WFH for short—has particularly been a hit with a few specific professions, according to the Glassdoor survey. Here are the top 10 professions, ranked by how satisfied employees were with working from home: Social Worker Customer … [Read more...] about Tired of the office? Ben of Ben & Jerry trades ice cream for cannabis
Ben Cohen of Ben & Jerry’s is telling me a story about smoking pot. We’re on Zoom, and he says: “The idea came about when I was on a camping trip with a friend of mine, sitting around a fire, smoking a joint. And we were saying, ‘Wouldn’t it be nice to have pot like the old days?’” The idea Cohen is referring to is his latest venture, the eponymously named Ben’s Best Blnz , or B3. The just-launched company is a bright, bold cannabis brand that offers low-THC pre-rolls and full-spectrum vapes. Much like his endeavors in ice cream, Cohen set out to use B3’s platform as a conduit for what he refers to as “social benefit.” B3 is registered as a nonprofit, with 100% of its profits split between three entities: 10% will go to the Last Prisoner Project , an organization dedicated to freeing individuals impacted by cannabis criminalization; another 10% will be donated to the Vermont Racial Justice Alliance , whose mission is to “secure sustainable power, ensure … [Read more...] about Ben of Ben & Jerry trades ice cream for cannabis
Globe keeps diversity and gender balance strong with women in leadership team
Globe is setting a new trend with women outnumbering their male counterparts in leadership positions. This comes at a time when most Philippine boardrooms are still dominated by men. Some 52% of Globe’s executive roster are women, with 49 holding the top two ranks in the corporate hierarchy, compared to 45 men as of end 2022. This marks the first time in at least five years that there were more female executives in Globe’s core business. Women ranked managers and directors have also been increasing in the last five years, rising from 958 in 2018 to 1,193 as of end 2022. Even while there are still more men in middle management, the female population is catching up. These figures buck the trend as cited in a March 2019 study by the Makati Business Club that was supported by UN Women, the European Union and Women Empower Asia. The study “Women in the Philippine C-Suite” found that only about three percent of C-Suite positions in business across the country are … [Read more...] about Globe keeps diversity and gender balance strong with women in leadership team
