By RALPH D. RUSSO (AP College Sports Writer) A congressional hearing Wednesday targeting “NIL chaos” in college sports drifted into the ramifications of athletes being deemed employees of their schools and mostly highlighted those who support congressional intervention to protect the collegiate model. A subcommittee of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce held the first hearing related to college sports on Capitol Hill in more than two years. The intended focus was name, image and likeness compensation for athletes. College sports leaders have been calling for help in the form of a federal law to bring uniform regulation to the way athletes can earn money off their fame with sponsorship or endorsement deals. Rep. Gus Bilirakis (Fla.-R), the chairman of the subcommittee on Innovation, Data, and Commerce, said passing a federal NIL law that would pre-empt existing state laws would provide clarity and transparency for athletes. “The lack of uniformity across different … [Read more...] about Congressional hearing targets ‘NIL chaos’ in college sports

Dangerous storms, tornadoes may target Midwest, South
By SETH BORENSTEIN (AP Science Writer) A seemingly relentless series of severe storms, likely with deadly tornadoes, are forecast to rip across parts of America’s Midwest and South over the next couple weeks, especially Friday, meteorologists said. An unusual weather pattern has set in, last week triggering the devastating tornado that hit Rolling Fork, Mississippi, and meteorologists fear this Friday will be one of the worst days, with much more to come. The National Weather Service said 16.8 million people live in the highest risk zone, and more than 66 million people overall should be on alert Friday. “It’s pretty darn clear that somebody is going to take it on the nose on Friday,” said Northern Illinois meteorology professor and tornado expert and chaser Victor Gensini. “It’s just a matter of where and exactly when.” The weather service is cautioning a large area of the country – including parts of Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, … [Read more...] about Dangerous storms, tornadoes may target Midwest, South

DOJ seeks court sanctions against Google over ‘intentional destruction’ of chat logs
Washington (CNN) Google should face court sanctions over "intentional and repeated destruction" of company chat logs that the US government expected to use in its antitrust case targeting Google's search business, the Justice Department said Thursday. Despite Google's promises to preserve internal communications relevant to the suit, for years the company maintained a policy of deleting certain employee chats automatically after 24 hours, DOJ said in a filing in District of Columbia federal court. The practice has harmed the US government's case against the tech giant, DOJ alleged. "Google's daily destruction of written records prejudiced the United States by depriving it of a rich source of candid discussions between Google's executives, including likely trial witnesses," the filing said. "We strongly refute the DOJ's claims," Google ( GOOGL ) said in a statement. "Our teams have conscientiously worked for years to respond to inquiries … [Read more...] about DOJ seeks court sanctions against Google over ‘intentional destruction’ of chat logs
Inflation Continues To Plague Small Businesses For Fifth Consecutive Quarter: REPORT
Inflation concerns among small business owners remained at record highs this quarter, according to a quarterly poll conducted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and MetLife released on Wednesday. A record high of 54% reported that, which is a 31-point increase from Q4 2021. “This quarter, small businesses’ concerns over inflation are soaring and their view of the broader economy is darkening, though they still report that their own businesses are in good health,” said Tom Sullivan, Vice President of Small Business Policy at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. In San Francisco, minimum wage increases are based on the yearly rise in the Consumer Price Index every July 1. “That means my rate jumps from $16.99 to $18.07 or 6.36%,” said Hrag Kalebijan, owner of Henry’s House of Coffee, according to the Index. “The … [Read more...] about Inflation Continues To Plague Small Businesses For Fifth Consecutive Quarter: REPORT

Turkish Elections: At The Crossroads Of Populism
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Turkey’s fate hangs on May 14, 2023. On that day, voters will choose between President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s current populist regime or opt for a new path. These elections impact not just Turkey’s domestic sphere, but global populism as well. Under Kemal Kilicdaroglu’s leadership, the Turkish opposition presents a noteworthy and inventive approach to navigate populist dilemma. This strategy, which I frame as countering populism and polarization through pluralism, achieved success in the 2019 local elections and may triumph once more. President Erdogan, is a seasoned populist. He predates other populist leaders such as former U.S. President Donald Trump, Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. They all boast anti-establishment views, emotional … [Read more...] about Turkish Elections: At The Crossroads Of Populism

I’m speaking of the “ rolling layoff ”—the name one former human resources executive gave to describe companies making job cuts in a series of rounds, rather than executing them all at one time. Disney said Monday it plans to cut 7,000 employees starting this week, my colleague Brian Bushard reported . “A second, larger round of notifications will happen in April with several thousand more staff reductions, and we expect to commence the final round of notifications before the beginning of the summer to reach our 7,000-job target,” … [Read more...] about The New Reality Of ‘Rolling Layoffs,’ AI’s Impact On Jobs And The Worst Email Sign-Offs
Earth-Sized Planet In ‘Solar System 2.0’ Has No Atmosphere, Says Webb Telescope
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Scientists using the James Webb Space Telescope have done something incredible by measuring the temperature of rocky exoplanet TRAPPIST-1b. Astronomers are desperate to explore smaller, rockier and more Earth-like planets such as those in the TRAPPIST-1 system, where seven rocky planets orbit a red dwarf (M) star about 40 light years distant in the constellation Aquarius. All are similar in size, mass, density, and stellar heating to the rocky planets Venus, Earth, and Mars in our own solar system. TRAPPIST-1 b, the innermost planet, has an orbital distance about one hundredth that of Earth’s and receives about four times the amount of energy that Earth gets from the Sun. TRAPPIST-1 has been dubbed a “Solar System 2.0,” but that might be about to change. Published in Nature this week, the detection of heat energy given off in the form of infrared light from a small, rocky planet much like those found in our own … [Read more...] about Earth-Sized Planet In ‘Solar System 2.0’ Has No Atmosphere, Says Webb Telescope
