House leadership may bring H.R. 6, the 21st Century Cures Act, to the floor after next week’s House recess. The bill doesn’t cure a thing, except, perhaps momentarily, the appetite of the federal leviathan to grow. H.R. 6 deepens the federal government’s involvement in medicine, a role that the Founding Fathers wisely left to the states and the people through the Tenth Amendment. The legislation is well-intentioned, but turns federalism on its head and spends a massive amount of money with dubious offsets. H.R. 6 is a 309 page bill that attempts to accomplish quite a bit. The bill’s goals include promoting personalized medicine, improving the clinical trials process, making the regulatory path clearer for medical apps, creating economic incentives for the development of drugs for rare diseases, improving, “the entire biomedical ecosystem ensuring the innovation infrastructure works as quickly and efficiently as possible.” Oh, it is also a “ jobs bill .” Somewhere in the … [Read more...] about The Century Cures Act Is A Needless Waste

A simple 5-step system to ace performance reviews
My first-ever performance review was for a huge consulting firm. It felt like drinking water from a firehose: How could I condense everything I’d done and learned into a few paragraphs? I stayed up all night, hacking together a list. But when I was done, I realized I’d missed the mark. All I had created was a record of the activities I’d done. The “so what?” wasn’t there. It wasn’t an ideal way to kick off my career. So, I developed a system that helped me track and celebrate my milestones and prepare for my reviews—without subjecting myself to disgusting coffee and all-nighters. Here’s my system, and how you can adapt it for your performance reviews. Step 1: Identify your metrics A successful performance review connects your accomplishments to metrics that matter. So, how do you identify the most important metrics? Pull verbs from your job description When you boil down a job description down, the verbs are what matter. Those words—along with … [Read more...] about A simple 5-step system to ace performance reviews
How machine learning is helping scientists forecast bird migration
With chatbots like ChatGPT making a splash , machine learning is playing an increasingly prominent role in our lives. For many of us, it’s been a mixed bag. We rejoice when our Spotify For You playlist finds us a new jam, but groan as we scroll through a slew of targeted ads on our Instagram feeds. Machine learning is also changing many fields that may seem surprising. One example is my discipline, ornithology—the study of birds . It isn’t just solving some of the biggest challenges associated with studying bird migration; more broadly, machine learning is expanding the ways in which people engage with birds. As spring migration picks up, here’s a look at how machine learning is influencing ways to research birds and, ultimately, to protect them. The challenge of conserving migratory birds Most birds in the Western Hemisphere migrate twice a year , flying over entire continents between their breeding and nonbreeding grounds. While these journeys are … [Read more...] about How machine learning is helping scientists forecast bird migration
Jennifer Aniston to Adam Sandler before kissing scenes: ‘Oil up the beard’
Cast members Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler arrive at the Los Angeles premiere of “Murder Mystery” at the Regency Village Theatre on Monday, June 10, 2019 in Westwood, Calif. Image: Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP LOS ANGELES — When it came to their kissing scenes in Netflix’s “Murder Mystery,” Jennifer Aniston had one requirement of co-star Adam Sandler. “I did have him learn to oil the beard up a little bit,” the actress said in a joint interview this week. “Conditioned.” Sandler said kissing his longtime friend on camera isn’t all that awkward, except when his wife Jackie and children are on set encouraging him a little too much. “The only awkward part is hearing my wife on the side going, ‘Harder! Harder! Kiss her harder! Deeper!” he joked. “They (Jackie and the kids) watched the kissing. They love it. They love Aniston, and they want her to have good things and they say, ‘Give her something nice.'” “That was awkward,” Aniston said. “Murder Mystery” follows a longtime … [Read more...] about Jennifer Aniston to Adam Sandler before kissing scenes: ‘Oil up the beard’
Jennifer Aniston: Netflix ‘Friends’ deal a testament to show’s value
Jennifer Aniston attends the world premiere of “Dumplin'” at TCL Chinese Theatre on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2018, in Los Angeles. Image: Richard Shotwell/Invision/AP LOS ANGELES — Jennifer Aniston calls it “amazing” that “Friends” still has an audience big enough to prompt multi-million dollar business deals to keep it from disappearing on Netflix. “I find it amazing that it’s continued to have such love and such an audience and such an appetite for it,” Aniston told The Associated Press Thursday at the premiere of her Netflix film “Dumplin”. After an outcry from fans, Netflix announced earlier in the week that it was keeping the adventures of Ross, Rachel, Phoebe and Joey available to subscribers through 2019 — at a reported $100 million (around P5.2 billion) price tag to the streaming service. READ: ‘Friends’ staying on Netflix through 2019 “I think it says a lot about the show. Especially since it takes place at a time where it’s so different from now. You know, people … [Read more...] about Jennifer Aniston: Netflix ‘Friends’ deal a testament to show’s value
Ukraine aims to exhaust Russian troops in Bakhmut–general
FILE PHOTO: Drone footage over Bakhmut, Donetsk region shows devastation amid fierce fighting during Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine in this still image obtained from social media video released March 26, 2023. 93rd Mechanized Brigade “Kholodny Yar” via REUTERS KYIV — Ukraine is aiming to exhaust and inflict heavy losses on Russian forces trying to capture the small eastern city of Bakhmut, the commander of Ukrainian ground forces said in a video posted on Tuesday. Moscow sees capturing Bakhmut as vital to its efforts to establish complete control over the Donbas industrial region in eastern Ukraine. “They do not stop trying to surround and capture the city,” Syrskyi said in the video posted on the Telegram messaging app. “As of today, our main task is to wear down the … [Read more...] about Ukraine aims to exhaust Russian troops in Bakhmut–general
‘Friends’, ‘Grace and Frankie’ creator outfoxes sexism
This 2016 photo provided by Netflix shows writer/producer Marta Kauffman, from left, Jane Fonda, as Grace Hanson, and Lily Tomlin, as Frankie Bergstein, in a scene from “Grace and Frankie”. Image: Netflix/Melissa Mosley via AP Ask Marta Kauffman if there will be a “Friends” reunion someday, and the answer is a crisp “nope.” Kauffman, who created the enduringly popular sitcom with David Crane and was an executive producer from start to finish, is focused on what’s now and next, not what’s past. She’s moved on from the 1994-2004 network-airbrushed adventures of young New York pals to the unvarnished pains and pleasures of older women — and, subordinately, men — in “Grace and Frankie”. The Netflix comedy is in the hunt to add 2019 Emmy Award nominations to those earned in its first four seasons by stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, who also have received Screen Actors Guild, Golden Globe and other nods of recognition. “Friends” can boast of nabbing a best comedy series Emmy in … [Read more...] about ‘Friends’, ‘Grace and Frankie’ creator outfoxes sexism
Navy SEALs Could Literally Waterboard Bill Belichick, And He Wouldn’t Crack
You gotta love Bill Belichick. The NFL owners meetings held their second day of festivities Monday, and it gave an opportunity for the press to talk with different head coaches around the league, including the New England Patriots’ Bill Belichick . Well, despite the media getting a chance to talk with the skippers, Belichick didn’t give them much. In fact, he was so stone-faced and simple with his words that it got me thinking … Navy SEALs could literally waterboard Bill Belichick, and he wouldn’t crack. Maybe we should have some kind of “Bill Belichick Training Class” in our military, teaching our soldiers how to be completely unbreakable in crucial and tense moments. God, that would be great.
