One resource we can’t replenish is time. So, it’s no wonder that people are so interested in how to save time or get more done in less of it. When we can get more done during the hours we have, we can use that “saved” time for something more meaningful. Some people take their time-saving efforts to an extreme, even going so far as to wear the same thing every day , saving time and possibly alleviating decision fatigue . And while you may not relish the thought of wearing the same suit or hoodie every day, there are some other ways you can take back your most precious resource and devote it—and its accompanying brain power—to something better. Here are some places to start. Assess your workflow (even outside of work) First, start by observing how you are spending your time, says productivity coach Maura Nevel Thomas, author of Personal Productivity Secrets: Do What You Never Thought Possible with Your Time and Attention and Regain Control of Your Life . … [Read more...] about Take back your time in 2023 with these simple planning strategies

Galapagos Whale Sharks Undergo Ultrasounds For First Time
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin This isn’t your ultrasound appointment. For one, the doctors on call weren’t sure if the patient(s) would show up. While the Galápagos Islands are one of many global locations that are visited by whale sharks ( Rhincodon typus ) during the year, there was no guarantee they would show. But the signs were promising, with the filter-feeder’s usual food plentiful along the rocky outcrops. The second indication this wasn’t your normal ultrasound appointment is the procedure would be taking place underwater. Not only that, but they were often working in strong currents and, although quite placid in nature, whale sharks are by nature “a lot faster than us, and emerge from the blue with little warning; we only get a short time to work with each animal,” says Marine Megafauna Foundation co-founder Simon J. Pierce, who is author on the paper and stresses the techniques in this research were also quite challenging to apply. … [Read more...] about Galapagos Whale Sharks Undergo Ultrasounds For First Time
Barriers To Employment Fall With The Rise Of Out-Of-State Occupational License Recognition
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Income tax rate reduction and flattening, along with the expansion of school choice, are among the most consequential policy trends of the early 2020s. However, there is another policy trend emerging that, like income tax relief and greater educational choice, is making states more attractive to workers and employers. That trend is the push by policymakers to remove or mitigate the barriers to employment that state occupational licensing requirements have become. On Tuesday, March 21, Florida legislators will hold a hearing on Senate Bill 1364, legislation to recognize out-of-state occupational licenses held by new residents so that they can get to work and begin earning income in their new home state right away. If this reform, known as Universal License Recognition (ULR), is passed by legislators in Tallahassee and signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis (R) this spring, Florida would become state number 22 to enact ULR. … [Read more...] about Barriers To Employment Fall With The Rise Of Out-Of-State Occupational License Recognition

Forget about goal setting. Try these 5 strategies instead
Goal setting is one of those things that seems like it would be fundamental to success. If you’ve read any books or articles about getting ahead in your career or life, you’ve probably come across tips on setting goals (like SMART goal setting) so that you can successfully meet them. But setting goals may not be as relevant anymore, and there may be better alternatives to managing your career–and your life. How A TikTok Ban Would Deal A Blow To Creators, Businesses And The American Economy
A U.S. ban on the world’s most popular social media app would affect far more American businesses and people than just the 150 million using the platform here. C asey Evertsen drove down a suburban Utah street lined with trash bins, speaking into his phone’s camera as he gave a tour of the brightly-colored truck he uses for his garbage can-cleaning business. “If you like seeing dirty stuff get cleaned and watching how cool stuff works, follow along,” he said in the video shared on TikTok. “Let’s clean some bins!” Evertsen’s service, Bin Blasters , had for a whole year struggled to get traction through Facebook and Instagram. So taking a cue from his teenage daughter, he decided to try promoting it on TikTok instead. On his eighth video, just one month in, Evertsen “blew up.” "I went out and just started cleaning bins that day, started on our route, and I look at my phone like an hour later, and there's 17,000 views,” he recalled. “Then it just got in the millions.” … [Read more...] about How A TikTok Ban Would Deal A Blow To Creators, Businesses And The American Economy

How to talk to your boss about working too much
When the pandemic hit and we all experienced a wave of uncertainty about how companies and jobs would fare in the fallout, workers buckled down and got things done. For many, that meant working longer hours. Remote employees worked an average of 2.5 hours longer per day in the U.S. and UK during the pandemic, according to a survey by cybersecurity platform NordLayer. And a 2021 study published in Nature Human Behavior found that remote workers are staying connected to work 10% longer than pre-pandemic. And the fallout can be serious. Research from Eagle Hill Consulting, LLC found that nearly half of employees are burned out from their work. A 2021 World Health Organization and International Labor Organization study found that long work hours (55 hours per week or more) contributed to more than three-quarters of a million deaths in 2016. Overwork is taking a toll mentally, physically, and creatively, says Sarah Deane, cofounder and CEO of MEvolution, a business … [Read more...] about How to talk to your boss about working too much
New York holds top spot, London second in Z/Yen financial center survey
People are seen on Wall St. outside the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S. REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File photo LONDON – New York kept the top spot in the latest rankings of global financial centers from Z/Yen Group on Thursday, with London and Singapore also unchanged in second and third place. New York overtook London to head the table in September 2018 — two years after Britain voted to leave the European Union — but London has retained its second place ranking since then, despite some predicting it could take a heavy knock from Brexit. “New York retains a significant first position, and five other U.S. centers are in the top 10,” Z/Yen chairman Michael Mainelli said in a statement. Finance industry officials worried about London’s global reputation as a financial center after the Bank of England had to step in last September to buy government bonds to stop a rout in prices. Markets had been unnerved by a government announcement of unfunded tax cuts. … [Read more...] about New York holds top spot, London second in Z/Yen financial center survey
