Alex Quinto, a middle-school counselor in Pinellas, Florida, has lots of questions about what “Don’t Say Gay” means for his students. Quinto, identifies as LGBTQ, and was recently recognized as an educator of the year by GLSEN, and organization which works to create safe spaces for LGBTQ youth. Quinto is worried about how he will maintain a safe space for his students at school, when their identities are under attack. He, like many educators in Florida, is unclear about what the infamous “Don’t Say Gap” bill means in practice. Will the Gay Straight Alliance be able to keep its name? (Quinto plans to keep the GSA even if it means changing the name and paying for it out of his own pocket). Will this start to impact the Black Student Union or the Japanese Culture club? What about the LGBTQ books he keeps on hand for students since they aren’t at the library? More worryingly, what about student confidentiality? advertisement advertisement Still, Quinto … [Read more...] about This is how Florida educators are fighting back against ‘Don’t Say Gay’

Chris Rock could host Oscars 2023 after ‘very unfortunate’ slap, TV exec says
Chris Rock may be hosting the annual Academy Awards next year, as an executive for ABC admitted he would like to have Rock back as a host after the comedian was slapped by actor Will Smith. The network’s President of Entertainment Craig Erwich stated that he considers the 2022 Oscars a “really successful year for the show” despite the controversy on Smith slapping Rock. He also expressed openness to the idea of having Rock host the show, as per his exclusive interview with Deadline on May 17. “My assessment of the Oscars was that it was really a successful year for the show. Obviously there was a lot of controversy, which overshadowed a lot of the positive things about the show, but I was really happy with the programme,” he was quoted as saying. “Even before that very unfortunate moment, the show started off up year over year, and we came back in a big way.” Erwich described the 2022 edition of the Oscars as the “biggest bounce back of any award show this season”. “If you … [Read more...] about Chris Rock could host Oscars 2023 after ‘very unfortunate’ slap, TV exec says
Georgia Politicians Target Raffensperger Over Trump Election Dispute—Say Voters Shouldn’t Pick Secretary Of State In The Future
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline The top-ranking official in Georgia’s House of Representatives said Thursday that he’ll ask for legislation that would put forward a constitutional amendment to strip voters of the right to elect the Georgia secretary of state, who serves to oversee elections, after current Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, a Republican, angered fellow GOP members by continually denying President Donald Trump’s baseless claims of widespread voter fraud in the state. Key Facts House Speaker David Ralston (R) said that lawmakers in the Georgia General Assembly, which includes the State House and Senate, would pick the secretary of state if the amendment is approved. The constitutional amendment would have to be passed by voters. President Donald Trump and other Republicans have continually attacked Raffensperger and Gov. Chahal is the best spinner says Gujarat Titans’ Rashid Khan
Rashid Khan is a phenomenal T20 player and a globetrotter. However, without his success in the IPL, it was unlikely that he would have gotten such a massive recognition in world cricket. After almost half a decade with the Sunrisers Hyderabad, the Afghanistan leg-spinner is now part of the Gujarat Titans. Khan spoke to Moneycontrol.com on his journey and ambition in a candid interaction. Here is an edited excerpt. Q: Rarely does it happen that the stature of a player gets bigger than his country in any sports. But that is what seems to have happened with you. Khan: Well, sometimes it still feels like a dream whenever I think of my journey in cricket. I am representing my country everywhere. Just six-seven years back, Afghanistan wasn’t playing as many matches (as they are playing now) and our players weren’t active in different leagues across the world. However, a lot has changed since then. I am really proud that I have played my part (in making Afghanistan prominent). I … [Read more...] about Chahal is the best spinner says Gujarat Titans’ Rashid Khan
UEM Sunrise says no profit erosion from construction cost hike this year
Sufian Abdullah (Photo by Zahid Izzani Mohd Said/The Edge) - A + A KUALA LUMPUR (May 25): UEM Sunrise Bhd chief executive officer Sufian Abdullah said on Thursday that the hike in construction cost is not eroding the group's profitability for the financial year ended Dec 31, 2022 (FY22). He said in a virtual briefing that the hike in construction cost is something that he has expected, and that it has no impact on the group's components this year. "But we will know that moving forward for the next couple of years. There's going to be a long-term impact of cost increase," he added. He also said that the group will monitor the construction cost closely, and will "fine-tune" the property prices instead of revising them. "We have seen a considerable increase in terms of construction materials… Given the volatility of material prices, this is something that we are constantly looking at and something that we are constantly monitoring," he said. Sufian also said … [Read more...] about UEM Sunrise says no profit erosion from construction cost hike this year
Small Businesses Are Starting to See Sales Slow–and That’s Not Likely to Change
After months of shouldering increased costs, customers are pulling back. That's according to small businesses surveyed in May by The Wall Street Journal . Some say that sales have decreased over the past few weeks--and the majority aren't optimistic about things getting better anytime soon. More than half (56 percent) of the 600 small businesses surveyed say that they expect economic conditions to worsen over the next year--up from 42 percent in April. Businesses across industries have raised prices to accommodate increasing costs, which have been ticking up for months thanks to supply chain snags and wage increases. To this point, customers have mostly been willing to pay those increased prices because they had no other alternative. As New York University economics professor Lawrence White told Inc.com in November , "If everybody's prices are going up, customer retention is less than an issue." But there is a limit to how long customers are willing and … [Read more...] about Small Businesses Are Starting to See Sales Slow–and That’s Not Likely to Change
NRA says meeting with Biden was ‘disappointing’
The National Rifle Association said it emerged “disappointed” from a Thursday meeting with Vice President Joe Biden and other gun owners’ groups. The meeting was a part of Biden’s work on a task force on gun policy, established in the wake of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. that left 20 children dead. The NRA statement on the meeting said that the group was “prepared to have a meaningful conversation about school safety, mental health issues, the marketing of violence to our kids and the collapse of federal prosecutions of violent criminals.” “We were disappointed with how little this meeting had to do with keeping our children safe and how much it had to do with an agenda to attack the Second Amendment,” the statement said. (RELATED: Professors support Sandy Hook conspiracy theories ) “While claiming that no policy proposals would be ‘prejudged,’ this Task Force spent most of its time on proposed restrictions on lawful firearms owners – … [Read more...] about NRA says meeting with Biden was ‘disappointing’
IPL 2022: MI skipper Rohit Sharma says not ‘losing sleep over disappointing season’
Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma admitted that a lot of things didn’t go his way with the bat but he is not losing sleep over his “disappointing” season as he is just one “minor adjustment” away from finding form again. Rohit endured his worst IPL season, failing to score a single half-century for the first time since his debut in the inaugural edition in 2008. The swashbuckling opener managed to score just 248 runs at an average of 19.14 and a strike rate of 120.17 in 14 outings. “A lot of things that I wanted to do didn’t happen. I am very disappointed with me season. But this has happened with me earlier as well, so it’s not something I am going through for the first time,” Rohit said after MI’s last match of the season on Saturday. “I know cricket doesn’t end here; there is a lot of cricket ahead. So I need to take care of the mental aspect and think about how I can return to form and perform. “It’s only a minor adjustment and I will try to work on that whenever … [Read more...] about IPL 2022: MI skipper Rohit Sharma says not ‘losing sleep over disappointing season’
