KL Bar also opposes Najib’s QC bid, says no indication Najib lost confidence in Shafee to argue SRC case

June 29, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A KUALA LUMPUR (June 29): The Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee (KL Bar), which represents about 10,000 lawyers in the capital, has also objected to Datuk Seri Najib Razak's bid to hire Jonathan Laidlaw, a lawyer from the United Kingdom, for his final appeal in the SRC International Sdn Bhd graft case. The KL Bar echoed the sentiment of the case's prosecution and the Malaysian bar that local lawyers, including Najib's own lead counsel Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, are more than qualified to handle the case. There is also nothing to suggest that the former prime minister has lost confidence in Shafee to lead the final appeal of the graft case, in which Najib was convicted by the High Court in July 2020 of misappropriating RM42 million worth of funds from SRC, formerly a subsidiary of 1Malaysia Development Bhd. "There is nothing to suggest that [Shafee] has lost confidence to argue the appeal; nor that [Najib] has lost confidence in [Shafee]'s competence to … [Read more...] about KL Bar also opposes Najib’s QC bid, says no indication Najib lost confidence in Shafee to argue SRC case

Amazon cloud unit on course for US$3 tril value, Redburn says

June 29, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A LONDON (June 29): Amazon.com Inc’s cloud-storage business is on a clear path toward a US$3 trillion value, almost triple what the whole company is worth now in the stock market, according to a Redburn Ltd analyst. The unit, Amazon Web Services, is so powerful that the company may decide at some point to split it off from the massive, slower-growing online retail operation, analyst Alex Haissl wrote in a 128-page report initiating coverage of the cloud-computing industry. He didn’t say when the US$3 trillion value may be achieved. “Separating AWS may not be on the table for now, but if the performance gap versus the non-AWS parts continues to widen, it could be on the table further down the road,” wrote Haissl, a former head of automotive research at Berenberg and Credit Suisse Group AG who began his career as a police officer in Vienna. Haissl recommends buying Amazon shares and sees the stock reaching US$270 in the next year, the highest target on … [Read more...] about Amazon cloud unit on course for US$3 tril value, Redburn says

June 29, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

Jerome Powell (Bloomberg filepix) - A + A (June 29): Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said the US economy is in “strong shape” and the central bank can reduce inflation to 2% while maintaining a solid labour market, even though that task has become more challenging in recent months. He also vowed to ensure rapid price increases don’t become entrenched, saying that “we will not allow a transition from a low inflation environment to a high inflation environment”. “We hope that growth will remain positive,” Powell said during a panel discussion Wednesday during the European Central Bank’s annual policy forum in Sintra, Portugal. Household and business finances are also in solid shape, and “overall the US economy is well positioned to withstand tighter monetary policy.” Raising interest rates without sparking a recession “is our aim and we believe there are pathways to achieve that,” Powell said, reiterating comments he’s made this month after the Fed on June … [Read more...] about Powell says US economy in strong shape, Fed can avert recession

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray (File image) Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray may resign before the floor test if the Maha Vikas Aghadi government fails to get relief from the Supreme Court, sources said on June 29. Thackeray has informed his cabinet colleagues about the decision to step down if the apex court refuses to rule in the government's favour on the plea that challenges the governor's floor test call , the sources claimed . Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari, earlier today, directed the chief minister to prove his majority in the assembly on June 30. This came a day after he met the Leader of Opposition, Devendra Fadnavis, who requested him to call for a floor test at the earliest. Thackeray, according to the sources, gave a farewell sort of speech during the cabinet meeting today, which was called to approve the renaming of Auranagabad to Sambhaji Nagar and Osmanabad to Dharashiv - both long-pending demands of Shiv Sena. ‘A Lot Cheaper To Get Rid Of Them’: Tucker Carlson Says Corporations Are Telling People They Can’t Have Children

June 29, 2022 by dailycaller.com

Fox News host and Daily Caller co-founder Tucker Carlson said Tuesday that corporations are telling their employees that they can no longer have children. The host said large corporations are paying for abortions because paying for maternity leave and other family oriented services are a financial burden to them. These companies and media networks want the American middle class to “reset” their “unrealistic expectations” of raising a family, Carlson said. “Now they’re telling you that you cannot have the one thing that most people want more than anything else; the one thing that biological instinct drives all of us to want, and that’s children,” Carlson said. “The most reliable source of meaning and joy in human existence, a family, is now out of reach for the American middle class, and you should accept that is inevitable. In fact, you should embrace it.” The host played a clip of MSNBC host Katy Tur suggesting that having a baby takes a toll on a woman’s “body” and … [Read more...] about ‘A Lot Cheaper To Get Rid Of Them’: Tucker Carlson Says Corporations Are Telling People They Can’t Have Children

Wade, Judge Amy Coney Barrett, President Trump’s pick for the Supreme Court, will defend herself as an impartial interpreter of the law in opening remarks to the Senate on Monday. Key Facts A copy of Barrett’s opening statement , which will be presented at Monday’s Senate judiciary Committee Hearing amid a whirlwind push from Republicans for speedy confirmation before the election, was published Sunday morning. June 28, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Key Facts Hutchinson recalled a conversation with former White House Deputy Chief of Staff Tony Ornato after the altercation, who said Trump lashed out at Engel when the Secret Service agent refused to bring him to the Capitol because of safety concerns. Trump said, “I’m the effing president, take me up to the Capitol—now!” Hutchinson recalled being told. Trump then grabbed for the steering wheel, Hutchinson said. Engel told Trump to “take your hand off the steering wheel,” and grabbed Trump’s arm, after which Trump used his free hand to lunge at Engel’s throat, Hutchinson said. Engel was in the room with Ornato and Hutchinson as Ornato told the story, and Engel “did not correct or disagree” with any part of the story, according to Hutchinson. Key Background Earlier, Hutchinson testified that Trump had demanded that metal detectors at the rally that were flagging weapons that people … [Read more...] about Jan. 6 Hearings: Trump Grabbed Limo Steering Wheel, Lunged At Security Chief In Rage At Not Being Taken To Capitol, Ex-Aide Says
