From satellite television to a new 5G cellular network: DISH engineers a massive transformation
DISH lit up a new 5G cellular network in more than 120 cities on June 14, including Grand Junction and Pueblo, meeting an early target federal regulators had set for the construction of the nation’s fourth wireless network. Whether Project Genesis, as the network is called, succeeds or fails will determine the fate of one of Colorado’s largest public companies, and could weigh heavily on Denver’s future as a center of telecommunications innovation, a legacy that goes back decades to the early days of cable television. “Through DISH’s efforts, Denver is becoming a wireless hub,” said John Swieringa, president and chief operating officer of DISH Wireless. “Our partners are coming here, too, and investing in people and resources in this market. We expect Denver to become a leader in 5G.” DISH Wireless has hired more than 1,600 workers in the past 18 months and is looking to add 500 more, Swieringa said. DISH, the parent company, already employs 6,000 people along the Front Range. A … [Read more...] about From satellite television to a new 5G cellular network: DISH engineers a massive transformation

Electricity tariff surcharge status quo a negative surprise for TNB
- A + A KUALA LUMPUR (June 26): While the public welcomed the government's decision not to raise electricity tariff surcharge in the coming six months, the move is a negative surprise for Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), which already saw cash flow squeeze, rising debt levels and record-high receivables in the first quarter as a result of rising fuel costs. TNB, which procures coal and natural gas for Peninsular Malaysia's power generation, may need to borrow more to fund the procurement if it cannot quickly recover the earlier spending on fuel costs, analysts said. Last Friday (June 24), Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the government had maintained the 1H22 (first half of 2022) electricity tariff surcharge of 3.7 sen/kwh for non-domestic users, and a rebate of two sen/kwh for domestic users for the July-December 2022 period. In a nutshell, TNB pays upfront for fuel costs before they are compensated six months down the road through a higher tariff … [Read more...] about Electricity tariff surcharge status quo a negative surprise for TNB

5 Hydrogen Stocks to Watch
Hydrogen is an energy source that emits zero greenhouse gases when burned. The only waste product is water vapor. That makes it a cleaner alternative energy source than fossil fuels like natural gas, oil, and coal. The drawback to hydrogen as a fuel source is that we rarely find it in a gaseous form. And although we can produce hydrogen from a variety of sources, some of those methods emit greenhouse gases. On top of that, we don't yet make it at the scale needed to be economically competitive with fossil fuels. However, that could change in the coming years. Several companies are working hard to tap into the enormous potential for this potentially emission-free fuel. Here's a look at some of the leading hydrogen stocks. Image source: Getty Images. What to know about investing in hydrogen There are several ways to produce hydrogen. Some methods result in the production of carbon dioxide as a byproduct. The industry labels these forms "blue hydrogen." Using … [Read more...] about 5 Hydrogen Stocks to Watch
Overturning Roe V. Wade: Here’s How Abortion Bans Will Hurt State Economies And The GDP
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline The Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade Friday, a monumental ruling for reproductive rights that’s also expected to broadly impact the economy, as a study from the International Women’s Policy Center found state economies already lose billions due to abortion restrictions—an issue that’s likely to now grow “exponentially.” Key Facts Numerous studies have found abortion restrictions and being denied an abortion have negative economic impacts —including by reducing participation in the labor force, decreasing earnings and increasing rates of poverty and debt—and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned in May overturning Roe “would set women back decades” economically. Those effects are felt at the broader societal level: Abortion restrictions cost state economies an estimated $105 billion per year and getting rid of all state-level restrictions would increase the national GDP by nearly 0.5%, the … [Read more...] about Overturning Roe V. In merger-friendly GOP administration, Dish’s Ergen gets chance to play kingmaker
It’s fitting that Dish Network Corp. Chairman Charlie Ergen is set to speak to Wall Street just as the wireless industry’s merger moratorium is lifted. His company’s massive stockpile of airwaves figures heavily in the speculation over who will buy whom. Douglas County-based Dish reports earnings Monday, just days after the end of a government-imposed quiet period related to a federal sale of wireless spectrum. In that auction and other deals over the past decade, Ergen’s satellite-TV company compiled $34.7 billion worth of nation-blanketing airwaves. Ergen kept buying spectrum even after an effort to merge with Sprint Corp. fizzled a few years ago, and investors have been trying to figure out his endgame ever since. Now, with a merger-friendly Republican administration in place, Ergen has a chance to finally do something with all those assets — if the notoriously prickly billionaire can find a willing partner, perhaps in T-Mobile US, Verizon Communications or Comcast. The … [Read more...] about In merger-friendly GOP administration, Dish’s Ergen gets chance to play kingmaker
Roe V. Wade Overturned: The Ultimate Explainer On What It Means
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Supreme Court on Friday overturned the nationwide right to abortion in its landmark Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization ruling, causing major uncertainty about the future of abortion access in the United States. Here are answers to some of the biggest questions: What did the Supreme Court’s ruling say? In a decision by Justice Samuel Alito, the court upheld a Mississippi law banning abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy. A majority of justices also voted to strike down Roe v. Wade (1973) and Planned Parenthood v. Casey (1992), effectively ruling abortion is no longer a nationwide right and giving states the power to ban the procedure. Alito called Roe v. Wade “an abuse of judicial authority” that relied on “egregiously wrong” reasoning, and argued the right to abortion is not expressly mentioned in the Constitution and isn’t “deeply rooted in this Nation's history and tradition.” Four other conservative … [Read more...] about Roe V. Dish’s new pick-your-own TV channels plan starts at $30
You sign up for a TV deal. Your bill skyrockets after the deal ends. You call and complain. Cable and satellite TV customers know the drill. Playing that game is the second biggest complaint Dish Network gets from customers. The first? Paying for too many channels they don’t watch. “I think we reached a tipping point,” said Warren Schlichting, Dish’s executive vice president of marketing, programming and media sales. “The consumer’s appetite has changed for having hundreds of channels. If you take a step back, you’ll see programmers and distributors (like Dish) have incentive to grow the pay TV industry. And we better find a way to meet consumer demand or people are going to watch Netflix all day.” On Thursday, the Douglas County satellite TV provider, reeling from its largest loss of quarterly subscribers ever, introduced a novel approach to address both issues. The Flex Plan offers 50 popular channels — including Food Network, CNN and USA — but no local networks for … [Read more...] about Dish’s new pick-your-own TV channels plan starts at $30
