Gun debate overshadows San Antonio area school district’s quiet progress on security
At the start of a panel discussion last month, the East Central Independent School District superintendent raised the question that had filled the auditorium with parents: “Why on earth, then, would you be talking about possibly arming staff?” Why, when most districts that do so are small and rural and depend on sheriff’s deputies to respond in a crisis, would East Central, with 10,200 students and a 13-person police department, consider arming educators? Superintendent Roland Toscano attempted to answer that night, and continues to try to explain it. “Arming teachers is one little piece in case everything else fails,” he said in a later interview. The gun debate in East Central ISD has been loud and bitter since the Guardian Plan, a legal option allowing Texas school districts … [Read more...] about Gun debate overshadows San Antonio area school district’s quiet progress on security

S. Carolina school district abolished snow days
.......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... Sorry kids, no more all-day pajama parties, cartoon marathons and snowball fights when you’re really supposed to be in school. A school district in South Carolina has done away with the much-loved snow days – requiring students to do classwork online. Officials with Anderson County School District 5 announced last week on social media that the district has been chosen to “pilot the first eLearning program in the state of South Carolina,” meaning that when roads are too treacherous for travel, teachers will send assignments to the students’ school-supplied tablets. The district calendar states that “inclement weather days will be eLearning days and will not be made up.” ADVERTISEMENT The simple fact is, though, that South Carolina has very little … [Read more...] about S.
