Supreme Court Sides With Ted Cruz In Campaign Finance Case

May 16, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline The Supreme Court ruled Monday in favor of Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) in a campaign finance case concerning how campaigns can repay candidates’ loans, in a 6-3 decision that critics warn could make it easier to bribe political candidates. Key Facts Cruz sued the Federal Election Committee regarding a rule that limits how political campaigns can reimburse candidates for loans they make to their own campaign, allowing them to repay up to $250,000 in loans at any time, and more than that only if they’re repaid within 20 days post-election. Cruz made a $260,000 loan to his campaign right before the election in 2018 and $10,000 could not be repaid, so Cruz sued to challenge the underlying regulation, arguing it infringed on his First Amendment rights. The court ruled that the limitation on repaying loans “burdens core political speech without proper justification,” saying if politicians can’t be fully … [Read more...] about Supreme Court Sides With Ted Cruz In Campaign Finance Case

What Do We Tell Our Newest Workers?

May 17, 2022 by www.inc.com

I used to be mainly concerned about the unfortunate but deeply ingrained attitudes of the upcoming and incoming workforce, and how these overly entitled kids would fit into the newly serious and heads-down culture of those startups and growth stage businesses that had dodged the bullets and stayed alive for the last three years. These kids had been indoctrinated from birth by helicopter parents, with first-place trophies for all, and convinced by college faculty that their generation would be a gift (and a bargain at any price) to the working world. But I'm afraid that over the last few years, the "real" world has taught them some even more pernicious and dangerous lessons. I was worried about the "work" part of their work ethic, and I should have been paying more attention to the ethics part. Work isn't going to be a picnic for anyone who thinks the next two years are going to be fun, easy, or anything but a difficult slog with plenty of bumps along the way. If they believe … [Read more...] about What Do We Tell Our Newest Workers?

Starbucks Says It Will Cover Employees’ Abortion Travel Expenses

May 16, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Starbucks on Monday announced it will cover costs for employees who must travel out of state to receive abortion services, the latest in a growing list of employers to offer the benefits after a leak two weeks ago showed the Supreme Court is poised to overturn Roe v. Wade and let states ban the procedure. Key Facts In a statement, the company said it was “committed to ensuring” employees have access to quality healthcare “regardless of where they live or what they believe.” Starbucks employees—as well as their dependents enrolled in Starbucks’ health insurance—will be reimbursed for travel expenses to receive abortion and gender-affirming care if the services are not available within 100 miles of their home. The news comes two weeks after Levi Strauss and Amazon reportedly said they would also pay for employees to travel to states with less restrictive abortion laws, while others are … [Read more...] about Starbucks Says It Will Cover Employees’ Abortion Travel Expenses

5 Steps For Brands To Build A Thoughtful Notification Strategy

May 16, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Fully 40% of information workers surveyed in the Forrester Analytics Business Technographics® Workforce Survey, 2020, said their coworkers frequently interrupt them via instant messages, emails, or other types of digital communication. This scenario resonates with all of us, even in day-to-day life — think about your group chat that blew up last night with party planning logistics while you were trying to cook dinner and ensure that your kids had done their homework. The challenge: There are simply too many notifications — and most of them sound the same. Our phones vibrate or ping, and we don’t know if the Supreme Court has reached a landmark decision or if our bank account balance has changed. Google’s latest experiment, Little Signals , looks to solve this problem by building on “calm technology” to deliver notifications through soft signals (such as puffs of air and shadows) that move from the background to the … [Read more...] about 5 Steps For Brands To Build A Thoughtful Notification Strategy

Why corporate America is afraid to talk about abortion

May 16, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

These days, corporations make public proclamations after just about every significant news event. After George Floyd was murdered, tech companies, including Microsoft and Apple, made pledges of $3.8 billion to diversify their hiring practices and better support Black workers. Airbnb, Google, and others rushed to announce matching donations to support relief efforts when Russia invaded Ukraine this February. And back in 2013, hundreds of companies , among them Starbucks and Facebook (now Meta), urged the Supreme Court to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act. advertisement advertisement This is part of a series of articles on the business case for abortion access. See the full package here. So why is it that, even amid the mounting pace of state legislation and recent Supreme Court leak , companies have had so little to say about abortion? Starting in March, in anticipation of the Court’s final decision this summer, … [Read more...] about Why corporate America is afraid to talk about abortion

Georgetown Law Professor Appears To Endorse Mob Violence Against SCOTUS On Twitter

May 9, 2022 by dailycaller.com

A Georgetown Law professor insinuated that it is appropriate to protest at the homes of conservative-leaning Supreme Court justices, according to tweets sent out following a leaked draft of the Supreme Court’s ruling on Roe v. Wade. Professor Josh Chafetz argued that protesting outside six Supreme Court justice’s homes is permissible after fencing was put up around the Supreme Court building. The professor said that calls to “protest at the Supreme Court, not at the justices’ houses” are less persuasive because of the fence. “The ‘protest at the Supreme Court, not at the justices’ houses’ line would be more persuasive if the Court hadn’t this week erected fencing to prevent protesters from coming anywhere near it,” Chafetz said. “‘Protest neither inside nor too far outside but right at the fence line,’” the law professor continued. Screenshot/Twitter/@joshchafetz Chafetz continued by arguing that some “aggressive tactics are justified” when “the mob is right.” … [Read more...] about Georgetown Law Professor Appears To Endorse Mob Violence Against SCOTUS On Twitter

WILBON And WILLIAMS: Democrats Have Taken Black Women’s Vote For Granted. Will It Come Back To Bite Them?

May 16, 2022 by dailycaller.com

In 2020, Joe Biden’s presidential bid was resurrected from life support by black women in South Carolina. The numbers bear us out; if the next Republican presidential candidate could garner 15% of the black female vote, it is game over for Democrats. The Black Women’s Roundtable (BWR) and Essence magazine recently released a poll to gauge the pulse of black women in America. Brilliant Corners Strategies , a Left-leaning market research company, conducted the survey. However, even a poll commissioned and conducted by the Left for the Left could not hide the great displeasure that black women have with the Democratic party. Only 9% of black women believe they are getting ahead. 61% of black women Gen Xers and 68% of the black women from the Silent Generation say the economy is getting worse. Only 65% of the black women would vote for the Democrats in the midterms. At least 92% of black women voted for the Democratic candidate in 2018. Democrats know they cannot win the … [Read more...] about WILBON And WILLIAMS: Democrats Have Taken Black Women’s Vote For Granted. Will It Come Back To Bite Them?
