Trump Refuses To Answer Questions In Deposition By N.Y. Attorney General
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Former President Donald Trump did not answer any questions during his deposition in the New York attorney general’s investigation into his company, he said Wednesday, claiming he had “no choice” but to plead the Fifth Amendment in light of the FBI raiding his Mar-A-Lago estate on Monday. Key Facts Trump was set to testify Wednesday as part of New York Attorney General Letitia James’ long-running civil probe into the Trump Organization and its financial dealings, in which James has said investigators have found “significant” evidence of fraud. In a statement posted to his social network Truth Social, Trump said he “declined to answer the questions” under the advice of his legal counsel, as well as because he believes the investigation is a “vindictive and self-serving fishing expedition” and he “did nothing wrong.” The ex-president pointed to the FBI’s raid on his home Mar-A-Lago on … [Read more...] about Trump Refuses To Answer Questions In Deposition By N.Y. Elon Musk sells $7B in Tesla shares ahead of Twitter fight
Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Elon Musk has sold nearly $7 billion worth of shares in Tesla as the billionaire gets his finances in order ahead of his court battle with Twitter. Musk disclosed in series of regulatory filings that he unloaded about 8 million shares of his company Tesla Inc. in recent days. In the (hopefully unlikely) event that Twitter forces this deal to close and some equity partners dont come through, it is important to avoid an emergency sale of Tesla stock," Musk tweeted late Tuesday. Musk is by far the largest individual shareholder in both Tesla and Twitter. Shares of Tesla rose almost 2% before the opening bell Wednesday. Shares of Twitter Inc., up 16% in the past month with most believing Musk faces long-shot odds of success in court, jumped another 3%. Close Musk countersued Twitter last week, accusing the company of fraud over his aborted $44 billion acquisition. He claimed that Twitter held back critical information and misled his team … [Read more...] about Elon Musk sells $7B in Tesla shares ahead of Twitter fight
China military ‘completes tasks’ around Taiwan, plans regular patrols
- A + A BEIJING/TAIPEI (Aug 10): China's military has "completed various tasks" around Taiwan but will conduct regular patrols, it said on Wednesday, potentially signalling an end to days of war games but also that Beijing will keep up its pressure on the island. Furious at a visit to Taipei last week by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, China extended its largest-ever exercises around the self-ruled island it claims as its own beyond the four days originally scheduled. Last week's drills included launches of ballistic missiles, some of which flew over the island's capital of Taipei, and simulated sea and air attacks in surrounding skies and waters. In a brief statement, the Eastern Theatre Command of the People's Liberation Army said its joint military operations around Taiwan "successfully completed various tasks and effectively tested the integrated combat capabilities of the troops". It added: "Theatre forces will keep an eye on the changes in the situation in … [Read more...] about China military ‘completes tasks’ around Taiwan, plans regular patrols
MACC officer: I only investigated Zahid in UKSB bribe probe
Zahid is facing 33 charges of receiving S$13.56 million (RM42 million) in bribes from UKSB as an inducement. (Photo by Patrick Goh/The Edge) - A + A SHAH ALAM (Aug 10): Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigating officer Mahendran Vrejenan told the High Court here that when he began investigating Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on suspicion of receiving bribes from Ultra Kirana Sdn Bhd (UKSB), he omitted other ministers also alleged to have received bribes from the company as he was only tasked with probing Zahid. Mahendran was responding to questions posed by both the prosecution and the defence over the names of politicians in a ledger kept by a former UKSB manager as a record of whom he paid bribes to. Testifying at Zahid's corruption trial, Mahendran told the court that while the names of a number of politicians and ministers had appeared in the ledger, he did not concern himself with them as his main task was to investigate Zahid and the … [Read more...] about MACC officer: I only investigated Zahid in UKSB bribe probe
MAHB, Capital A discontinue all legal proceedings against each other
MAHB, Capital A cease legal proceedings - A + A KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 10): Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd and Capital A Bhd have both decided to drop legal proceedings against each other that they initiated via their subsidiaries Malaysia Airports (Sepang) Sdn Bhd (MASSB) and AirAsia Aviation Group Ltd (AirAsia Group). The two groups have locked horns since the end of 2018, when AirAsia Group's Malaysian operations refused to collect the higher passenger service charges (formerly known as airport tax) from passengers that MAHB and MASSB demanded, after the rate was raised to RM73 per pssenger in 2018 from RM50. This escalated into a series of lawsuits between the groups, starting with three civil suits MAHB filed against AirAsia Group's units — AirAsia Bhd and AirAsia X Bhd — to claim for the unpaid PSC and late payment charges related to them. They obtained a summary judgement from the High Court in 2019, which the Court of Appeal upheld earlier this year. Najib’s final SRC appeal to proceed on Monday but defence counsels may discharge themselves
Najib's final appeal to proceed on Monday, with defence possibly discharging themselves - A + A PUTRAJAYA (Aug 10): The Federal Court said on Wednesday (Aug 10) that the hearing of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's application to adduce further evidence in his RM42 million SRC International Sdn Bhd case to nullify the trial in which he was convicted to spend 12 years in jail, will proceed as scheduled on Monday. This comes after both the prosecution and defence agreed to exchange written submissions on Wednesday. The defence will begin by amending the notice of motion to adduce evidence and make submissions with regard to trial judge Datuk Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali for three hours, after which the prosecution will also be given three hours to reply. Should the application to adduce further evidence be dismissed on the same day, the apex court will proceed to hear Najib's appeal over his conviction and sentence in the SRC case. Japan PM shuffles Cabinet as anger deepens over ties to Unification Church
Kishida, in office since last October, announced his new government team in a shake-up that came earlier than analysts had expected. - A + A TOKYO (Aug 10): Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida reshuffled his Cabinet on Wednesday amid growing public anger about the ruling party's ties to the controversial Unification Church, saying the group had held no sway over party policy. The Liberal Democratic Party's (LDP) long-standing links to the Unification Church, which critics call a cult, has become a major liability for Kishida in the month following the killing of former premier Shinzo Abe, helping send Kishida's approval ratings to the lowest since he took office in October. Abe's suspected killer has said his mother, a member of the church, was bankrupted by it and blamed the politician for supporting it. Founded in South Korea in the 1950s and known for its mass weddings, the group has come under criticism for its fundraising and other issues. Since then, a … [Read more...] about Japan PM shuffles Cabinet as anger deepens over ties to Unification Church
Small nuclear reactors finally get the nod from regulators, but they still have a lot to prove
Congress is finally moving this week on the Inflation Reduction Act , a bill that could drive a 40% reduction in carbon emissions over the next decade. But another government arm, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, made its own (far quieter) news this month when it gave final certification to a new kind of nuclear reactor called a small modular reactor (SMR). While the announcement received basically no fanfare, proponents say it could play an important role in decarbonizing the world’s energy supply. advertisement advertisement The agency first performed a safety review of reactor company NuScale Power’s SMR design in 2020. A year later, the NRC completed its standard rulemaking process, which included a review of public comments. On August 2, the commission issued a final approval for the SMR, though NuScale says it’s unlikely to become operational until 2029. Technically, nuclear power is capable of delivering large amounts of emissions-free … [Read more...] about Small nuclear reactors finally get the nod from regulators, but they still have a lot to prove
How to make decision fatigue more bearable
Staring at a lengthy dinner menu while eating out last night, I couldn’t bring myself to contemplate its many choices, however delightful. “I’ll just take whatever is most popular,” I said when the waiter arrived. For a foodie like me, what? Decision fatigue is what. advertisement advertisement Every day, we face thousands of decisions, both big and small—from what to wear, to what to eat, to what to say and how to say it, to whether to change jobs or careers. In total, this amounts to approximately 35,000 remotely conscious decisions a day. And while this number sounds absurd, researchers at Cornell showed that we make 226 decisions each day on food alone. When we face so many choices and make decision after decision, it depletes our mental energy and willpower . This biological price tag is called decision fatigue —or a state of cognitive overload and strain that can hamper your ability to make additional decisions. In this state, our … [Read more...] about How to make decision fatigue more bearable
