Travel Tool: This Map Can Predict The Next Covid-19 Hot Spots

October 10, 2020 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Looking for a getaway destination that’s not going to be a Covid-19 hot spot when you get there? For months now, the nation’s top infectious disease expert has been telling Americans that the Covid-19 positivity rate — the percentage of tests that are positive — is the best predictor of where the coronavirus is going to ravage next. “It’s a clear indication that you are getting an uptick in cases, which inevitably leads to surges, and then you get hospitalizations, and then you get deaths,” Dr. Anthony Fauci told CNN in early August. He has reiterated this point many times since. In other words, a rising positivity rate is an early predictor of where we’ll see an uptick in Covid-19 cases. It’s an indicator for how widespread infection is in a given area, and also whether there is enough testing to keep up with levels of disease transmission. Johns Hopkins University’s percent positive map (above) provides a … [Read more...] about Travel Tool: This Map Can Predict The Next Covid-19 Hot Spots

These findings reinforce the importance of hand-washing or using disinfecting hand sanitizer after visiting an ATM or handling cash. The researchers tested how long the coronavirus survived on both paper and polymer banknotes at various temperatures. They found that the coronavirus can survive “to at least 28 days” on both types of banknotes, which is significantly longer than the seasonal flu virus’s “demonstrated survival up to 17 days” at room temperature (20 degrees Celsius or 68 degrees Fahrenheit). “The persistence of virus on both paper and polymer currency is of particular significance, considering the frequency of circulation and the potential for transfer of viable virus both between individuals and geographic … [Read more...] about Coronavirus Can Remain On Paper Currency For 28 Days, Per New Study

June 25, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

Unprecedented forest fires in the drought-stricken western United States . Tropical storms and rising seas threatening the Gulf and Atlantic coasts. Sizzling heat across large swaths of the country. As climate change unfolds before our eyes, what can the U.S. do to sharply and rapidly reduce its share of the greenhouse gas emissions that are causing it? advertisement advertisement The Biden administration has committed to reducing those emissions 50% by 2030 to below 2005 levels. That’s a critical first step of a global energy transition that must achieve net-zero emissions by midcentury to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) and thereby avert the worst impacts of climate change. Twenty years ago, I would have regarded the U.S. 2030 pledge as crazy talk. But a new study in the journal Science that I coauthored, compares results from six independent analyses conducted by academic, industry, and nongovernmental … [Read more...] about How we can meet Biden’s 2030 climate goals with today’s technology
