Open Network for Digital Commerce a fascinating idea; excited about prospects: Amazon India senior executive
(Image Courtesy: Reuters) Amazon is “excited” about the prospects of Open Network for Digital Commerce in India’s still-nascent e-commerce market, its Country Manager for India Consumer Business Manish Tiwary has said, describing the network as a fascinating idea. The views assume significance as the government in April this year launched the pilot phase of India’s own open network for digital commerce or ONDC, a UPI-type protocol, in five cities, with the ambitious project geared to democratise the fast-growing e-commerce sector, help small retailers and reduce the dominance of online retail giants. Asked about his views on ONDC, Tiwary said the company is looking forward to innovations, which will lift all boats in the ecosystem and bring more buyers and sellers online, as it focuses on serving the next 500 million customers. “I am focused on serving the next 500 million customers. Therefore, I look forward to innovations, which will lift all the boats in the ecosystem,” … [Read more...] about Open Network for Digital Commerce a fascinating idea; excited about prospects: Amazon India senior executive
A VC Told Him He Had a Billion-Dollar Idea. He Stayed Niche Instead
Most entrepreneurs would be thrilled if a VC told them they had a billion-dollar idea. Not Winston Chen. A longtime tech executive in Boston, Chen first came to my attention not for his work but for not working at all. I wrote a story back in 2013 about a yearlong sabbatical he took with his family on a tiny Norwegian island in the Arctic. In the midst of that long, dark Nordic winter, Chen had built a text-to-speech app called Voice Dream Reader . When we spoke, it was a modest success, helping those with visual impairments and learning differences and supporting the Chen family. Today, it's doing a whole lot better. The original app, as well as related additional products, have won Chen both hundreds of thousands of loyal users and a prestigious award from the National Federation of the Blind. He's far from a billionaire, he told me recently, but he's making a tidy living off the app. But soon after Chen returned to Boston, a local VC, whom Chen was talking … [Read more...] about A VC Told Him He Had a Billion-Dollar Idea. Are Black Businesses Ready For Another Recession?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Black businesses were slammed by the pandemic-induced recession of 2020. Although they bounced back fairly strongly in 2021– according to research by Robert Fairlie, a professor at University of California, Santa Cruz–many Black businesses still have some of the vulnerabilities that existed before, such as low cash reserves and difficulty accessing credit relative to other groups. These vulnerabilities will likely still exist in the event of another downturn, the odds of which are growing. “If we do slip into a recession I predict that it will be bad for Black-owned businesses,” Fairlie tells Forbes . He added that many such businesses already struggled through the pandemic “and don't have large cash reserves, owner wealth, or access to bank credit to weather another recession.” The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this week that the economists it surveys have dramatically raised the probability of … [Read more...] about Are Black Businesses Ready For Another Recession?
5 Ways To Be A Better Leader During A Crisis
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin By Anjan Pathak For any aspiring leader, going through a crisis is a rite of passage. After all, it's easy to be a good manager when everything is going well, but your ability as a leader is truly tested when there is a true crisis. While crisis management may be near the top of a manager's priority list, it is one of the trickiest areas to navigate. Thus, it's not surprising that crisis preparation for a company can cost anywhere from $60,000 to $500,000 (depending on the industry and location). In comparison, unprepared companies in a crisis can spend close to millions of dollars on mitigation while at the same time losing hundreds of millions in reputation and shareholder value. The real issue with crisis management is that it is incredibly unpredictable. You never know when or what kind of crisis will strike. Consider the Covid-19 pandemic. If someone had told us in 2019 that the world would be in a two-year … [Read more...] about 5 Ways To Be A Better Leader During A Crisis
The ultimate guide to purposeful productivity (your mental health will thank you)
Have you ever looked at another person’s daily accomplishments and thought, “How do they do it”? By the time most are pouring a second cup of coffee in the morning, some super-achievers have gone for a 5-mile run, hit inbox zero, and nailed the rough draft of that report due next week. Behind Ace Hotel Founder Alex Calderwood’s Creative Life And Untimely Death
You know the place, even if you haven’t been there. advertisement advertisement From the outside, it has a spare, severe look. But inside, past the flower stall and barbershop, the vibe is serene and hushed. Long tables and worn leather chairs invite people to cluster; the scent of locally roasted coffee mixes with the sound of the nearby photo booth, whirring in the background. There are vintage records on the shelves and slinky indie pop on the speakers, and the late afternoon sunlight makes puddles on the century-old wood floor. The feeling is both of the moment and timeless. To a remarkable extent, this place, the Ace Hotel, is the brainchild of a single man, a lean, mop-haired native of the Pacific Northwest named Alexander Calderwood. A kind of hipster polymath, he was able to look around the corners of culture and see what was coming years, if not decades, before everyone else. In his 20-year career, Calderwood cofounded a barbershop, a … [Read more...] about Behind Ace Hotel Founder Alex Calderwood’s Creative Life And Untimely Death
