(CNN) Poliovirus has been detected in wastewater samples in New York City, suggesting likely local circulation of the virus, according to state and local health officials . "We are dealing with a trifecta. Covid is still very much here. Polio, we have identified polio in our sewage. And we're still dealing with the monkey pox crisis," New York Mayor Eric Adams said Friday on CNN's New Day. "We're addressing the threats as they come before us and we're prepared to deal with them and with the assistance of Washington, DC." 'Silent' spread of polio in New York drives CDC to consider additional vaccinations for some people In a statement about the wastewater finding, New York officials underscored the urgency of staying up to date with polio immunizations, particularly for those in the greater New York metro area. Most people in the US are protected from polio because of vaccination. The primary series of three vaccines provides 99% … [Read more...] about Poliovirus detected in wastewater samples in New York City, health officials say

Omicron Is Overwhelming New York’s Quarantine Hotel System
(Representative image) For much of the pandemic, one way that the city has tried to slow the coronavirus’s spread is by offering free hotel rooms to infected people who cannot easily isolate themselves from those they live with. But the sheer number of people who are sick with the omicron variant may be overwhelming the hotel program — both for the general public and another for people in homeless shelters. Inside one Brooklyn shelter this week, 11 women who had tested positive for the virus were crowded into a small room furnished with only a few mattresses on the floor and several chairs, two of the women said. Three people who tried to take advantage of the main hotel-quarantine system said Thursday that they either had waited days before getting a room, given up and paid for one themselves, or been stuck on hold for hours on a city hotline without anyone ever picking up. Others have posted messages on Twitter about their own long waits. “I requested a hotel over 5 … [Read more...] about Omicron Is Overwhelming New York’s Quarantine Hotel System
Harry’s Table By Cipriani Makes Market Shopping Chic On New York’s Upper West Side
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin New Yorkers have never wanted for Italian specialties shops, but New Yorkers have never seen anything quite like the new Harry’s Table by Cipriani (hereafter HTC), outside of the stunning, long-lived PECK in Milan, and far more appealing than the touristy New York EATALY stores. In its breadth of space alone—28,000 square feet—HTC sets an unhurried pace, and, while sometime in the future it may be jammed, for the moment the eight-week-old market is a civilized pleasure to visit, shop in and eat at. HTC is located at ground level in the dwarfing, monolithic Two Waterline Square, near Lincoln Center, from which it currently draws most of its clientele. Since parking (outside of an expensive lot) is almost impossible, dropping by for those who do not live in the area will require you take a taxi or car service. The sprawling food market is the first by the Cipriani family, whose legendary history dates back to 1931, … [Read more...] about Harry’s Table By Cipriani Makes Market Shopping Chic On New York’s Upper West Side
Companies Not Changing Health Benefits Despite Roe V. Wade Ruling, Study Finds
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Roe v. Wade decision is top of mind for the public sector, many business leaders— even scientists. The Turnaway Study conducted at the University of California at San Francisco, found that receiving an abortion does not harm the health and well-being of women. In fact, it found that being denied an abortion results in worse financial, health and family outcomes. Another study by JAMA Psychiatry found that women seeking and being denied abortions reported significantly more mental health issues eight days later. They suffered more anxiety, poor self-esteem and low life satisfaction—but similar levels of depression—as women receiving abortions. Rumblings In The Workplace In response to the Roe v. Wade ruling, several leading companies like Apple, Citigroup, Netflix and Salesforce are expanding healthcare benefits. “In the workplace, the reversal of Roe is not only an issue impacting the health and well-being of … [Read more...] about Companies Not Changing Health Benefits Despite Roe V. This Hot New Vacation Spot Could Be Underwater Within 15 Years
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin ISLA HOLBOX, MEXICO - While the wind-roiled waters of the Gulf of Mexico lash the shores of this narrow island less than 100 yards away, barefoot construction workers trudge through puddles of mud and shin-deep standing waters left by recent rains to lay the foundation for much-needed road improvements. The workers' struggle to keep the slurry from immediately filling in the trenches they're digging could be just as futile as keeping this road open 10-15 years from now if worst-case scenario estimates about rising sea levels pan out. Road construction amid rain puddles on Isla Holbox, Mexico. (Credit: Eric Mack) The way things have been going with the latest projections, that's how soon it could be that this street is permanently under sea water rather than just temporarily swamped by torrential rains. The upgrades to the current grid of sandy streets used by the small island community's ubiquitous golf carts … [Read more...] about This Hot New Vacation Spot Could Be Underwater Within 15 Years

Financial Anxiety Is Increasing As Inflation Surges, And People Are Living Paycheck To Paycheck
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The wild party is over, and the United States is now dealing with the hangover. Americans are experiencing the adverse effects of consequential decisions made by the Federal Reserve Bank and the U.S. government. The institutions distorted the economy by printing too much money and spending trillions of dollars on various stimulus programs . To revitalize the economy in the wake of business shutdowns during the pandemic, the Fed—through quantitative easing—bought Treasury and agency mortgage-backed securities—amounting to around $8.5 trillion . The cascade of money flooding the market, in part, led to the rapid rise in inflation. Once inflation rose uncontrollably, it was clear that the jig was up. The Fed has no other choice than clamp down on the economy, which will catalyze job losses, to fight ruinous inflation. Inflation, Yet Another Tax These actions result in a lower quality of life for many people. … [Read more...] about Financial Anxiety Is Increasing As Inflation Surges, And People Are Living Paycheck To Paycheck

A Massive Hole Found In A Glacier In Antarctica Is Really Bad News For Beach Homes Everywhere
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Thwaites Glacier as seen from above. NASA/OIB/Jeremy Harbeck A new study led by NASA has found a giant cavity in the underside of the huge Thwaites Glacier in West Antarctica. The gigantic void is a thousand feet tall (300 m) and about two-thirds the area of Manhattan Island, according to the space agency . The researchers estimate that the hole is big enough to have contained 14 billion tons of ice, but most of it was melted over the past three years thanks to ocean water flowing into gaps between the glacial ice and rock below. "We have suspected for years that Thwaites was not tightly attached to the bedrock beneath it," said Eric Rignot from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Rignot co-authored a new study published in Science Advances that used observations from ice-penetrating radar in NASA's Operation IceBridge and a constellation of newer satellites to take a closer look at what's happening … [Read more...] about A Massive Hole Found In A Glacier In Antarctica Is Really Bad News For Beach Homes Everywhere
