NEW YORK — A movie a day in theaters for $10 a month seemed too good to be true. And it was. MoviePass, which tried to bring Netflix-like subscriptions to the movie theater, pulled back on its deal last summer. MoviePass was a consumer success, but a financial disaster. MoviePass had to pay theaters the full price of most tickets, which quickly exceeded $10 each month. Today, MoviePass chugs along with an offer for three movies a month starting at the same $10 fee. But it faces competition from theater chains and a Turkish startup that brought back a movie a day, at least temporarily — this time for $20 a month. The survey asked participants to rank each brand based on a Composite Loyalty Index, and then ranked each chain based on its average score. Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas took the top spot, and swept the concessions categories for its convenience and variety. 2018 has been a big year for movies at the box office. This summer alone raked in nearly $5 billion (thanks to an early start with "Avengers: Infinity War") — the second-biggest haul for a summer ever. MoviePass’ e-ticketing feature allows users to purchase tickets on the app without being at the theatre. Users can also see big movies with e-ticketing that are now otherwise restricted. But it’s only offered at a select group of participating theatre chains. As movie-theatre subscription service MoviePass overhauls its business model, one feature has gone untouched: e-ticketing. MoviePass’ e-ticketing is a way to purchase movie tickets through the app without using the MoviePass card. You can reserve seating when available, and MoviePass says “you can check in from anywhere, like work or home.” But it only works at a select group of participating theatre chains.
