June 28, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A LONDON (June 28): Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc is abandoning the sale of the Boots drugstore chain in the UK citing "unexpected and dramatic change" in the global financial markets since launching the sales process in January. The American healthcare group had been in talks with a consortium between Reliance Industries Ltd and Apollo Global Management Inc over the more than £5 billion (US$6.1 billion) sale of Britain's biggest pharmacy chain. As a result of "market instability severely impacting financing availability, no third party has been able to make an offer that adequately reflects the high potential value of Boots", Walgreens said in a statement on Tuesday. The recent strong performance of Boots, and its key No7 beauty brand, is also behind the decision to retain the business, the company added in the statement. The Boots sale was considered a litmus test for dealmaking in the UK with credit markets becoming increasingly fragile. The easy financing … [Read more...] about Walgreens abandons Boots sale amid volatile debt market

The Supreme Court of the United States has handed down a bevy of decisions in the past week as it nears the end of its term and prepares to adjourn for summer recess. advertisement advertisement The court’s latest decision , posted Monday morning, rules that a high school football coach was exercising a constitutional right in praying on the field after games, in a case that could erode the separation of church and state across the country. The case centers on Joseph Kennedy, an assistant coach at a public high school in Bremerton, Washington, a small community outside of Seattle. For eight years, Kennedy would routinely pray at the 50-yard line immediately after games—often joined by student athletes, who would surround him, heads bowed, at the field’s midway mark. After an opposing coach commented on the practice at one of these games, the Bremerton School District warned Kennedy not to pray if it would involve students. K to 12 curriculum ‘too overcrowded’: Gatchalian seeks focus on Math, Reading

June 28, 2022 by newsinfo.inquirer.net

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian (File photo from the Senate PRIB) MANILA, Philippines — Citing what experts flagged as a “too overcrowded” K to 12 curriculum, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian on Tuesday pushed for more focus on younger students’ abilities to read and deal with numbers. Gatchalian cited the observations of education experts who found that the K to 12 curriculum “needs decongesting” as it requires learners to study too many competencies, eventually affecting their capability to master basic abilities. The senator, who is set to stay as chairman of the Senate basic education committee under the next Congress, raised this concern as the incoming administration said it would review the K to 12 program. Gatchalian said there is a need to refine the curriculum for Kindergarten to Grade 3 learners. Supreme Court Backs School Football Coach Who Was Punished For Praying

June 27, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline A high school in Washington wrongly punished a football coach after he prayed on the field, the Supreme Court ruled Monday, potentially paving the way for fewer restrictions on how public school employees can express their religion while on the job despite Constitutional restrictions on religion in schools. Key Facts The court sided 6-3 with Joseph Kennedy, a former high school football coach in Washington who was punished after praying on the football field during games, which the school said violated the separation of church and state. Kennedy argued that the school district unlawfully violated his First Amendment rights to free exercise and free speech, which the Supreme Court agreed with. In a ruling that split along ideological lines, the justices ruled that Kennedy was not “acting within the scope of his duties as a coach” because he was praying after the game ended and wasn’t doing any of … [Read more...] about Supreme Court Backs School Football Coach Who Was Punished For Praying
