Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Payments processing giant Stripe announced that it has raised a $6.5 billion funding round at a $50 billion valuation on Wednesday. The new valuation marks the latest in a series of cuts for the Stripe and for unicorns more broadly. The new funds will be used to help current and former employees pay taxes related to their expiring restricted stock units Stripe. In doing so, some Stripe shares from earlier investors and stakeholders will be retired and offset the new shares issued in Stripe’s Series I. Founded in 2010, Stripe grew from a single tool —code for developers to enable credit card payments on their sites—to a large suite of billing, tax and other fintech tools, including a recent partnership with OpenAI. The Collison brothers, who still run the company, are now each worth $5.5 billion, Forbes estimates, down from $9.5 billion at Stripe’s peak valuation in 2021. Saturn’s Wet Moon Enceladus May Be Rapidly Flinging Microbes Into Space, Say Scientists
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Saturn’s sixth-largest moon Enceladus has a secret. About 12 miles underneath the icy crust of this “veiny eyeball” moon is a warm, dark saltwater ocean thought to have the same kinds of hydrothermal vents found in Earth’s oceans—and where microbes thrive. Is the same thing happening on Enceladus? We’re probably not talking weird eyeless sea creatures , largely because the total biomass that the moon’s underground ocean could support may be less than that of a whale . It’s known that tiny icy silica particles from the seafloor are eventually sprayed into space from fractures in the ice known as ‘‘tiger stripes” near Enceladus’ warmer south pole. Those particles go on to help form Saturn’s second outermost E ring. But they could also contain biosignatures—the first evidence of some kind of life beyond Earth. World’s First Major Science-Backed Shark Reintroduction A Success
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin “There she goes!” one of the team members cried out in joy. Scientist Nesha Ichida couldn’t tell who the cheer came from, her eyes focused intently on the small spotted shark in her hands that was bobbing on the surface of the warm, turquoise ocean water. A member of the family Stegostomatidae, the zebra shark ( Stegostoma tigrinum ) she currently held onto was named Kathlyn - and Kathlyn was a little shark making big history. Kathlyn wriggled out of Nesha’s hands into the waters of Indonesia’s Wayag Islands, the first time she would swim out in the open ocean. Kathlyn and Charlie (a male zebra shark that had been released earlier that day) were a beacon of hope for scientists from aquariums around the world that were working together to rebuild the wild population of zebra sharks that have been wiped out from overfishing and shark finning. A large shark that undergoes a radical transformation in coloration with age, this … [Read more...] about World’s First Major Science-Backed Shark Reintroduction A Success

Pentagon Study Links Cancer Risk To Pilots, Ground Crews
Recently released research from the Pentagon has linked military pilots and ground crew members to high cancer rates. The Department of Defense (DOD) study found that within the population of those in the U.S. military who either flew or serviced American aircraft there is a significantly elevated risk of cancer compared to the average American civilian. Data from nearly 900,000 service members who either flew on, operated or worked on U.S. military aircraft between 1992 and 2017 developed the findings of the official DOD research. In its yearlong study of almost 900,000 service members who flew on or worked on military aircraft between 1992 and 2017, the Pentagon found that air crew members had an 87% higher rate of melanoma and a 39% higher rate of thyroid cancer. https://t.co/6KcRFt5lPc — Stars and Stripes (@starsandstripes) March 19, 2023 Air crew service members who had assignments flying on military aircraft had an 87% higher rate of falling ill with … [Read more...] about Pentagon Study Links Cancer Risk To Pilots, Ground Crews
How This Bedsheets Startup Figured Out The Right Way To Disrupt Sleep Patterns
There was a time not that long ago when buying high-quality bedsheets was a major investment. Running Shoes Provide A Jolt To The Depressed Athletic Footwear Market During Pandemic
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Athletic footwear sales took a hit — as did retail across the United States — during the global pandemic. Running shoes, though, have recently provided a positive trend and expectations have the sector growing, even if general retail doesn’t find its footing. “Typically, during recessions, we see running shoes perform well,” says Matt Powell, The NPD Group vice president and sports industry expert. “I expect the same here. Running shoes have been positive for the last four weeks.” While athletic footwear sales dipped as much as 50 percent in April, after a tough March, the running shoe market may be the saving grace for the rest of 2020. And along with the usual players, Powell says that brands such as Hoka One One, On Running and Brooks also saw a nice kick. Brooks says the shuttering of stores had an immediate impact on sales, but now numbers have passed what they were in 2019. Reebok is more than doubling its … [Read more...] about Running Shoes Provide A Jolt To The Depressed Athletic Footwear Market During Pandemic
