COVID-19 is increasing religious tolerance. Here’s why

· February 8, 2021 ·

advertisement advertisement advertisement One year into the pandemic, protective face masks have come to signify different things for different groups of people. advertisement advertisement To some it’s an issue of protest, while for some others it’s a statement of social responsibility. Some people have even turned it into a style statement and are willing to spend hundreds of dollars on designer masks . At the same time, racialized perceptions related to masks have put an additional burden on groups that already experience racism and inequality. Across the country, several Black American men have been arrested, followed and challenged by police officers who claimed they looked “suspicious” in pandemic masks. But in a group I have studied since 2013—Muslim women in the West who wear the niqab, or the Islamic veil , along with a headscarf, the experiences have been more positive. CHALLENGES FACED BY MANY MUSLIM … [Read more...] about COVID-19 is increasing religious tolerance. Here’s why

‘This is bigger than just Timnit’: How Google tried to silence a critic and ignited a movement

· February 26, 2021 ·

advertisement advertisement advertisement Timnit Gebru—a giant in the world of AI and then co-lead of Google’s AI ethics team—was pushed out of her job in December. advertisement advertisement Gebru had been fighting with the company over a research paper that she’d coauthored, which explored the risks of the AI models that the search giant uses to power its core products—the models are involved in almost every English query on Google , for instance. The paper called out the potential biases (racial, gender, Western, and more) of these language models, as well as the outsize carbon emissions required to compute them. Google wanted the paper retracted, or any Google-affiliated authors’ names taken off; Gebru refused. After the company abruptly announced Gebru’s departure, Google AI chief Jeff Dean insinuated that her work was not up to snuff—despite Gebru’s credentials and history of groundbreaking research . The backlash … [Read more...] about ‘This is bigger than just Timnit’: How Google tried to silence a critic and ignited a movement

How Dominion Voting Systems’ defamation lawsuit exposes the My Pillow Guy’s patriot act

· February 26, 2021 ·

advertisement advertisement advertisement Mike Lindell, aka “The MyPillow Guy,” used Dominion Voting Systems’ technology as a scapegoat for Donald Trump’s loss in the 2020 election, until Dominion finally filed a $1.3 billion defamation suit against him. advertisement advertisement The suit, filed by top-shelf defamation attorneys Tom Clare and Megan Meier, sets out to do two main things. It details all the times Lindell falsely asserted that Dominion machines were programmed to steal votes from Trump and give them to Biden (to “steal” the election), and it makes the case that Lindell’s noisy embrace of Trump was motivated by a desire to sell pillows to right-wingers, not so much by political true belief. The lawsuit begins by showing that Lindell hasn’t always been honest in marketing claims about his pillows. Lindell was sued in 2016 for making false claims in MyPillow infomercials. A talented salesman, Lindell personally … [Read more...] about How Dominion Voting Systems’ defamation lawsuit exposes the My Pillow Guy’s patriot act

4 reasons why these underdog founders are the future of our economy

· February 22, 2021 ·

advertisement advertisement advertisement I have spent the better part of my adult life seeking an avenue for impact . I h ave tried my hand at affecting social, economic, and humanitarian change through a number of different platforms — from journalism to diplomacy to big tech . This drive is deeply personal; galvanized by events that predate my own birth, propelled by the serendipity of my upbringing and the very real possibility of where I might have ended up if not for hard work and some luck. It is an unusual and nonlinear path to venture, but each foray has only strengthened my conviction not only in technology for impact, but also in the transformational — and too often overlooked — power of intersectional entrepreneurs. advertisement advertisement Growing up in the Bay Area may have contributed to my passion for technology and entrepreneurship, but it was less about my geography and more about the … [Read more...] about 4 reasons why these underdog founders are the future of our economy

I worked a reduced schedule at the height of my career. This is why I know it’s possible

· February 19, 2021 ·

advertisement advertisement advertisement I was working hard at the office and home before I delivered my second child in January 1983. Too hard. advertisement advertisement Keen to spend extra time with my family, I sought a four-day schedule following my maternity leave from the Washington bureau of The Wall Street Journal . A reduced workweek is highly unusual, I noted in my proposal. But by satisfying an important personal need, the arrangement “would permit me to channel even higher energy levels into my Journal assignments.” Management rejected my request. Luckily, I finally got my wish in fall 1983, after Norm Pearlstine became the Journal’ s managing editor and Al Hunt its Washington bureau chief. Both bosses greatly valued working women. Hunt and his wife, Judy Woodruff, a White House correspondent for NBC News, had a toddler son. Pearlstine gave me Fridays off without cutting my pay or benefits because I … [Read more...] about I worked a reduced schedule at the height of my career. This is why I know it’s possible
