Frozen salmon and scallops from Cold Storage. CONTRIBUTED PHOTOS This Lenten season, the Christian/Catholic faithful are encouraged to fast and/or abstain. According to the Catholic website Dominus Est (DominusEst.PH), fasting is reducing one’s intake of food to one meal a day or two small meals that count as one meal. Abstinence is stopping intake of meat from mammals and fowl, including soup made from these, and is usually done on Fridays. It’s time, then, to go pescatarian! Marco Qua, president of Cold Storage, which imports and packs seafood from all over the world, has tips on how to know if your seafood is fresh. First, purchase fresh from the market or at least from reliable brands that practice sustainable and ethical sourcing. For Cold Storage, he shares, they attend trade shows to really search for partners who are not only committed to sustainability but have the papers to prove it. Second, purchase seafood from a place of origin that already has a reputation for … [Read more...] about Stock up on quality seafood this Lenten season

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Key takeaways Google’s generative AI chatbot, Bard, is now open to U.S. and U.K. users as the AI wars move at breakneck speed The Big Tech giant, keen to avoid another AI-related stock price fall, stressed a ‘slowly, slowly’ approach Alphabet’s stock price rose over 3% at the news despite users branding the chatbot as dull compared to Bing and ChatGPT We have good news for those eagerly awaiting Google’s bite of the AI cherry: Google Bard is now available to U.S. and U.K. citizens in an open beta. Intended as a rival to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Bing Chat, the generative AI model is Google’s stake in the ground for the AI wars. Google’s had a rocky AI journey after being caught out by the runaway success of OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot, launched in November last year. So far we’ve seen an internal ‘code red’ memo, a lackluster launch and promises of generative AI tools without any firm deadlines. … [Read more...] about Google Opens Early Access To Bard AI, Prompts Small Bump In Stock Price
Snowflake IPO: In-Depth Analysis
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Snowflake is the most anticipated IPO of the year. Investors should decide in advance how much they are willing to pay as Snowflake will test the upper limits of what it means to have a stretched valuation. Heck, the company has even inspired value-legend Warren Buffet to change his thesis and invest in an IPO prior to profitability (!) Perhaps because the company delivered sky-high revenue growth last fiscal year of 173% and 121% in the most recent quarter with a record-breaking net retention rate of 158% — which is the highest of any public cloud company at time of listing. These industry-leading numbers are due to the company disrupting the data warehousing market with a superior cloud data platform that delivers across key differentiators (we review this below). Despite Snowflake demonstrating excellent product-market fit, clear competitive advantages, and strong management — no company is perfect. We go over a few … [Read more...] about Snowflake IPO: In-Depth Analysis

Bern’s Restaurant In Tampa Is One Of The World’s Best Steakhouses
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin There are a handful of eateries so notable I feel like when I travel to the cities they are in I absolutely have to eat there or it’s a wasted culinary trip. Examples would include the nation’s best pizzeria, Tony’s Pizza Napoletana in San Francisco (before you argue, read this ), Casa Julian outside San Sebastian Spain ( read more here ), and the original muffuletta sandwich at the place it was invented, Central Grocery in New Orleans. Tampa’s most famous restaurant, Bern’s Steakhouse , also makes this list. I just returned to Tampa for the first time in years to catch a couple of Yankees spring training games, and even before I bought airline tickets I made a reservation for Bern’s way in advance, because they are always really hard to get. But if any travel takes you to Tampa, it is absolutely worth the effort. I have covered restaurants for decades and especially steakhouses, and there are a lot of great ones … [Read more...] about Bern’s Restaurant In Tampa Is One Of The World’s Best Steakhouses

Today’s Wordle #642 Hint, Clues And Answer For Thursday, March 23rd
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Eight days. That’s how long we have left in March. Soon enough, April will bring spring showers in order to facilitate May flowers. I’m not sure if May flowers do anything special for June, but clearly all of this is just preamble for the best month of the year, just like every month after June is just falling action. Time to reflect on why June is so awesome. Still, we’re a ways off from the month of my birth, which I suppose I should be thankful for since it means I can remain that much younger for that much longer. I turn 42 this year, which feels older than I feel, though sometimes I feel older than I think of myself, since I mostly think I’m much younger than I am but feel much older than I’d like. 42 is also “the meaning of life, the universe, and everything” according to Douglas Addams’ The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, which will be the theme of my birthday party this year. I’m planning to serve seafood so … [Read more...] about Today’s Wordle #642 Hint, Clues And Answer For Thursday, March 23rd
LinkedIn turns 20: An oral history of an unlikely champion
When LinkedIn launched, on May 5, 2003, it wasn’t a given that it would thrive. Born during the doldrums after the original dotcom bust, it arrived at the same time as a flurry of other social networking upstarts, most of which quickly fizzled. Its emphasis on members’ professional lives rather than personal pursuits was seen by some as a strategic blunder. Even the notion of posting your résumé in public was jarringly unfamiliar and likely to be taken as an act of disloyalty. Rather than falling victim to preexisting assumptions, LinkedIn changed them. Eventually, it was not having a LinkedIn profile that was perceived as a weird career move. As the pandemic and its aftermath have reshaped work, the service has both reflected that new world and equipped workers and employers to succeed in it. Its emphasis on professionalism also offers a safe harbor from more toxic and polarizing social platforms. LinkedIn hasn’t escaped the current tech downturn—in February, it … [Read more...] about LinkedIn turns 20: An oral history of an unlikely champion
Waymo Makes A New Safety Case And Challenges All To Also Do So – But Is It Right?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Today, Waymo released an extension of their previous safety frameworks where they promote what they call a “Case Credibility Assessment” — a way of examining whether any safety case is strong and should be believed. Developers of robocars prepare a “Safety case,” which is to say a case (argument) that the vehicle presents an “absence of unreasonable risk” to riders and the public. That case consists of a combination of both credible arguments and credible evidence that a system will be as safe as is claimed as as it needs to be. Waymo hopes that its safety cases will be credible and that this methodology for that will be used not just by themselves, but by others deploying self-driving cars. You can read about their approach in their blog post , which has a link to a much longer and more academic paper about the methodology . To be frank, this is fairly dense stuff, for safety nerds. 99.999% of the people who ride in … [Read more...] about Waymo Makes A New Safety Case And Challenges All To Also Do So – But Is It Right?
Coinbase Crypto Exchange Faces Possible SEC Charges, Company Says
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase announced Wednesday it received a notice from the Securities and Exchange Commission warning that regulators have identified possible violations of securities law, in the latest legal snarl for the crypto giant. Key Facts Coinbase attorney Paul Grewal said in a blog post the SEC sent the company a “Wells notice” warning it of possible violations that could lead to charges, but offered “little more” information, other than telling the company the infractions may involve “an undefined portion of our listed digital assets, our staking service Coinbase Earn, Coinbase Prime, and Coinbase Wallet.” Grewal said Coinbase “prepared for this disappointing outcome,” but will continue to operate as normal. Grewal added, “we are very confident in the way we run our business,” while blasting the SEC for a so-called lack of transparency and criticizing regulation of crypto … [Read more...] about Coinbase Crypto Exchange Faces Possible SEC Charges, Company Says
