Dreaming big is great. Dreaming up a stage production that stands to cost a small theater company three times the budget of its previous most-expensive show? That sounds ... implausible, to say the least. But it’s happening at the Brooks Theatre in Oceanside, where the 1965 musical “Man of La Mancha” is about to receive its first San Diego-area professional production in nearly seven years. The show, says director and Oceanside Theatre Co. artistic chief Ted Leib, will have a cast of 14 plus six live musicians, which is a whole lot of people for the cozy Brooks stage. Putting up a show of that scope doesn’t come cheap, but Leib says it’s worth it to do justice to “La Mancha,” a work he feels has grown a little underappreciated.“It’s a powerful piece, if you do it with reverence for the material,” says Leib, who has been working to further raise OTC’s profile since he took over as artistic director in … [Read more...] about Oceanside Theatre embracing big (but not impossible) dreams with ambitious staging of ‘Man of La Mancha’

MINNEAPOLIS—They have gathered in defiance of the freezing temperatures on a late February’s night, scores of them twirling Somali flags in one hand and American flags in the other, crowding around the arrivals terminal and waiting to welcome one of their own. The vast Somali community in the Twin Cities is like one sprawling extended family, explains Ali Aden, a 39-year-old engineer who came to the U.S. two decades ago, as we survey the scene. When a prominent member of the family arrives, it’s customary to greet them this way. “Is it Congresswoman Omar they’re waiting for?” I ask, referencing the freshman Democrat whose district we’re standing in.Story Continued Below “Ilhan?” he smiles broadly. “No, no. If it were Ilhan, the whole city would be here.” As it turns out, the reception is for an obscure Somali government dignitary. In normal times, his arrival would be the talk of the local expat community; some 80,000 … [Read more...] about The Democrats’ Dilemma
NATIONAL HARBOR, Maryland—It’s 4 p.m. on Wednesday, the first day of the 2019 Conservative Political Action Conference—not exactly a prime speaking slot—but a standing room-only crowd has gathered to hear from freshman Congressman Dan Crenshaw. While we wait for the 34-year-old Texan, who is running late due to a vote in the House, the first person I talk to at the back of the Eastern Shore meeting room is Jacob Foster, an 18-year-old high-school student at Gann Academy outside Boston, who is attending CPAC for the third time in his young life. Foster is something of an endangered species at the conference: a conservative who likes a lot of the policies advanced by President Donald Trump yet doesn’t intend to vote for him in 2020 because of Trump’s character. But Crenshaw gives Foster hope. “The glaring difference is he’s not facing accusations of sexual assault, he hasn’t had three marriages, he didn’t dodge the Vietnam … [Read more...] about Is Dan Crenshaw the Future of the GOP?
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - A longtime ally of U.S. President Donald Trump was arrested on Friday for lying to Congress about the 2016 campaign's efforts to use stolen emails to undercut his Democratic rival in one of the highest-level arrests of the Special Counsel probe into possible election manipulation. Roger Stone, a 66-year-old self-proclaimed Republican "dirty trickster," declared himself innocent hours after a large team of FBI agents raided his Fort Lauderdale, Florida home. He is one of the closest Trump associates to be charged in Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into whether Trump's campaign colluded with Russia to help win the election. Mueller said in court papers that Stone shared with multiple members of the Trump campaign team advance knowledge he had of a plan by WikiLeaks to release senior Democrats' emails. Some political analysts say the emails, which highlighted disputes among Democrats, contributed to Trump's stunning defeat of election rival Hillary … [Read more...] about Trump ally Roger Stone arrested for lying to Congress
