Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Even as calls continue for a national ban on the Chinese-run social media platform TikTok, this week South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem signed an executive order officially banning the app on state-owned devices that can access the Internet, including smartphones, tablets and laptops. The order was in response to the growing national security threat posed by TikTok due to its data-gathering operations on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). "South Dakota will have no part in the intelligence gathering operations of nations who hate us," said Governor Kristi Noem. "The Chinese Communist Party uses information that it gathers on TikTok to manipulate the American people, and they gather data off the devices that access the platform." Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Key Takeaways Stronger Than Expected Employment Report Can Tech Rally Hold Attention Now Shifts To Next Fed Meeting It’s been an interesting week so far for equities. Most indices were unchanged this week with the one exception being tech stocks. Buoyed by comments from Federal Reserve Chairman Powell on Wednesday, the Nasdaq 100 is up nearly 4% headed into Friday. However, that could all change following the stronger than expected November jobs reports. Much of the economic data this week suggests the economy is continuing to grow, albeit at a slower pace. The Core Price Index showed an increase of 0.2%. Personal spending was up 0.8% and when adjusted for inflation it was up 0.5%. Both those readings were roughly in line with expectations. Heading into today’s jobs number, economists were looking for the unemployment rate to remain at 3.7% with 200K new jobs created. However, that number came in … [Read more...] about Strong Jobs Number Has Stocks Looking Weaker
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Fed Chair Jerome Powell made clear in a recent speech that services inflation is what concerns him most. He is cautiously optimistic that goods prices will continue to come down and that housing costs will moderate into 2023, but he worries that services costs will continue to follow wage costs higher. Still, he believes that rates are now close to restrictive levels, so slowing the pace of hikes and holding rates high until inflation is clearly coming down are part of effective management of the uncertainty around inflation, in Powell’s view. This makes a 0.5 percentage point hike when the Fed next sets rates on December 14, highly likely . Powell spoke extensively at the Brookings Institution on November 30 about monetary policy and the U.S. economy. He first presented on inflation trends for the U.S. economy and then took questions. Markets have viewed his comments favorably, confirming that the U.S. economy is … [Read more...] about Fed Chair Powell Suggests 0.5 Percentage Point Hike For December
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The complaint says the Bitcoin Latinum founder lured an investor in with the promise that the producers of Star Trek had already invested $20 million. An investor in a scarcely-known cryptocurrency called Bitcoin Latinum — named for a type of money that exists only in the fictional Star Trek universe — says that he was defrauded out of more than $15 million. A lawyer for the investor, Arshad Assofi, wrote in a new lawsuit submitted earlier this month that the cryptocurrency, which claimed to be “greener” and “faster” than conventional bitcoins, is “worthless” and a “scam.” The attorney also stated in his complaint that Assofi was told by Bitcoin Latinum’s founder, Don Basile, that the project had received “$20 million from the producers of Star Trek ,” among other alleged investors that did not exist. Paramount, the production company behind the famed science fiction series and its numerous spinoffs, denied … [Read more...] about A Cryptocurrency Named After The Fictional Money In Star Trek Is ‘Worthless’ And ‘A Scam,’ New Lawsuit Alleges
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Twitter CEO Elon Musk on Friday released, through an independent journalist, the Twitter Files, a 37-part Twitter thread of internal documents that shows some of the internal debate and reasoning behind the social media platform’s controversial “free speech suppression” around a bombshell 2020 report on President Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden—though despite Musk’s hype, it doesn’t deliver any particular shocking new details. Key Facts Musk, a self-described free-speech absolutist, retweeted the Twitter Files Friday night, releasing a series of internal communications released to and reported on by the independent journalist Matt Taibbi, who called the internal documents a “Frankenstinian tale of a human-built mechanism grown out the control of its designer.” The documents show Twitter staff took “extraordinary steps” to suppress an October 2020 New York Post story that claimed unseemly ties between … [Read more...] about Musk’s ‘Twitter Files’: Internal Hunter Biden Debate Revealed With Much Hype But No Bombshells
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The FTX bankruptcy on November 11 shocked the crypto market wiping out FTX's $34 billion valuation overnight with investors like Sequoia and Softbank writing their investments in FTX down to zero. Market contagion is spreading with BlockFi the latest casualty filing for bankruptcy earlier this week and Coinbase’s debt trading at near distressed levels. FTX was reported to have been $8 billion short of fulfilling customer requests for their money just 2 days before the bankruptcy and estimates vary about how much customer money is locked up in the bankruptcy. Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Elon Musk has received praise for his attempts to tackle Twitter’s long-documented child exploitation problems. Yet Forbes finds many users who appear to be trading egregious illegal content. L ast week, influential podcaster Liz Wheeler, who describes herself as “unapologetically one of the conservative movement's boldest voices,” took to Twitter to praise its new CEO, Elon Musk, for purging the site of “child pornography and child trafficking hashtags.” (Child advocates have long argued these terms indicate legitimacy and compliance on the part of the victim, and that such content should be called “child sexual abuse material.”) “Think about how many little children he’s saving from sexual abuse, exploitation & torture,” she added. Responding to Wheeler’s comments on Tuesday, Musk tweeted, “This will forever be our top priority.” Yet such illegal material remains alarmingly easy to find on Twitter—in … [Read more...] about If Child Protection Is Musk’s ‘Top Priority,’ Why Is It So Easy To Find Users Selling Images Of Nude Minors On Twitter?
When President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January, he will assume broad power over enforcing the nation’s immigration laws, such that he could dramatically reshape immigration policy on his own. As The National Immigration Law Center, a nonprofit advancing rights for low-income immigrants, explains , the president has plenary authority to enforce immigration laws and manage agency priorities. As chief executive, he may prioritize resources to meet policy goals, and set the prosecutorial direction of agents on the ground — that is, he may identify which classes of illegal immigrants should be investigated, arrested, and prosecuted.
