Opinion: What happens next to Brittney Griner is beyond our control

Nevertheless, I feel fairly safe in predicting that WNBA star Brittney Griner will not serve all nine years of her sentence by a Russian court for drug possession and smuggling. Gene Seymour It's not that much of a stretch to imagine this coming true, especially when recapping the basis for that charge: two vape cartridges of hashish oil found in Griner's luggage at a Moscow airport in February. Nine years? For two cartridges? The maximum sentence is 10 years , and at least Griner didn't get that. Palestinians: Israeli troops kill 3 militants in West Bank

August 9, 2022 by www.denverpost.com

By ILAN BEN ZION JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli troops killed three Palestinian militants and wounded dozens in a shootout that erupted during an arrest raid in the city of Nablus in the occupied West Bank on Tuesday. The shootout came a day after a cease-fire ended three days of fighting between Israel and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group in the Gaza Strip. Israeli police said security forces encircled the home of Ibrahim al-Nabulsi, who they say was wanted for a string of shootings in the West Bank earlier this year. They confirmed that al-Nabulsi and another Palestinian militant were killed in a shootout at the scene, and that troops found arms and explosives in his home. The Israeli military said that troops came under attack from Palestinians throwing rocks and explosives, and that soldiers responded with live fire. It confirmed Palestinians were shot, but did not elaborate on their condition. Editor Daily Rundown: Joe Biden Deeply Unpopular With Voters

March 11, 2022 by dailycaller.com

BIDEN DEEPLY UNPOPULAR WITH VOTERS… WSJ: Biden, Democrats Lose Ground on Key Issues, WSJ Poll Finds WASHINGTON—President Biden and his fellow Democrats have lost ground to Republicans on several of the issues most important to voters, a new Wall Street Journal poll finds, a troubling sign for the party seeking to extend its controlling majority of Congress for another two years. The new survey showed that 57% of voters remained unhappy with Mr. Biden’s job performance, despite favorable marks for the president’s response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and a recent State of the Union speech, which provided him an opportunity to directly speak to millions of Americans. Just 42% said they approved of Mr. Biden’s performance in office, which was virtually unchanged from the previous Journal poll in mid-November. Meanwhile, Democratic advantages narrowed over Republicans on issues related to improving education and the Covid-19 response. A 16-percentage-point Democratic edge … [Read more...] about Editor Daily Rundown: Joe Biden Deeply Unpopular With Voters

9 Reasons To Love Mauritius Now

August 9, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin It seems that just about everyone was in Mauritius at some point—Arabians in the 10th century, followed by the Malays and then the Portuguese, who named it Ilha do Cerne (“Island of the Swan”) but didn’t stick around. The Dutch colonized it, until that failed and the French moved in and named it Isle de France. After a war, the British had a turn until the country became independent in 1968. And while it doesn’t have an easy past (the colonists imported and enslaved much of the population, then enticed Indians essentially as indentured servants), the result of all that history today is a fascinatingly multicultural island. Everything seems to be a blend of European, African, Asian and Creole influences. The island is also an exclusive one, says Ashwin Cahoolessur, an officer at the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority. There are no low-cost flights, and some 50 of the island’s 101 hotels have five stars. He continues that … [Read more...] about 9 Reasons To Love Mauritius Now

Ferdy ordered, covered up murder of Yosua: Police

August 10, 2022 by www.thejakartapost.com

Nina A. Loasana (The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Jakarta   ● Wed, August 10 2022 In a twist that was both shocking and yet hardly surprising, the National Police on Tuesday announced they had charged former internal affairs chief Insp. Gen. Ferdy Sambo with the murder of his own aide de camp, Brig. Nofriansyah Yosua Hutabarat, ending weeks of wild speculation surrounding a case that has gripped the nation. Yosua was killed on July 8 in what the police initially claimed was a fatal shoot-out between him and another police officer, Second Agent Richard Eliezer, at Ferdy’s residence in Duren Tiga in South Jakarta. The police said the altercation took place following Yosua’s alleged attempt to sexually harass Ferdy’s wife, Putri Chandrawathi, in her bedroom. The police have now officially retracted that account, saying that there was no indication that Yosua was killed in a shoot-out and that there was sufficient evidence to conclude that Ferdy may have orchestrated Yosua’s … [Read more...] about Ferdy ordered, covered up murder of Yosua: Police
