The official Starbucks BLM T-shirt is very clearly on brand. There’s a graphic codesigned by the Starbucks Black Partner Network, an internal organization of black employees. It features protest signs in Starbucks’s color palette of red, green, and yellow, against a black background. One reads “Black Lives Matter.” The others have more generic sayings like, “Stand Up!” “Justice,” and “Love.” At the bottom, there’s a lyric from a song from the musical Hamilton: “It’s not a moment, it’s a movement.” … [Read more...] about Starbucks banned employees from wearing BLM T-shirts. As COVID-19 began to crest in mid-March, Starbucks’s stock plummeted alongside the rest of the market. After all, Starbucks has 15,000 stores in the U.S. and another 4,000 stores in China, and it closed cafes across both countries. How could it survive with the world under quarantine? But thanks to a successful front end of the quarter, in addition to app ordering, drive-throughs, and delivery, Starbucks’s revenue only dropped 5% in the first three months of 2020. Starbucks survived, the stock has largely rebounded, and it’s considered by some to be one of the safest investments to make today (although it expects results from the current quarter to be much worse). … [Read more...] about Starbucks is about to look a lot different—and COVID-19 is only part of the reason why
As we toured that tapas-serving Starbucks, Sleeth caught glances from quiet coffee drinkers as he pointed out all sorts of little experiments his team was running inside the evening store. There’s a checkout counter that’s a few inches lower than norm, which was designed to make the register more approachable–and in fact, it appeared to do just that. The pastry case is open air and grounded with white marble, akin perhaps to what you might see at Le Pain Quotidien. It felt suitably luxurious, though it seemed like the pastries might dry out more quickly. If these ideas perform well, proving both practical and contributing to a store’s bottom line, Sleeth intends to use those insights at Teavana or Evolution Fresh as well as other Starbucks. It’s as if Starbucks is building a giant pinball machine of design, hoping to boost their score as an idea bounces from one property to the other. … [Read more...] about Can Starbucks Make 23,000 Coffee Shops Feel Unique?
In April 2018, Starbucks drew criticism after an employee at one of its Philadelphia locations called the police on two African American men for trespassing. They hadn’t bought anything from the cafe, and one man asked to use the bathroom and was told it’s only for paying customers. The men had been waiting for a colleague to arrive for a business meeting. … [Read more...] about Starbucks reverses course on Black Lives Matter attire ban after boycott threats
A third editor reports that she stays loyal to her Illy and moka pot on the weekend, when things are a bit more leisurely. But while juggling two remote-learning kids plus work responsibilities during the week, Jot is an irresistibly efficient way to get her Americano fix. “It’s rich and tasty, especially when I add in my Barista Edition Oatly, which I’ve become addicted to during quarantine. It feels totally indulgent and is utterly effortless. And I’m still coming in under the cost of a high-end coffee shop, even when you add in the Oatly.” … [Read more...] about Can Jot’s coffee concentrate make you forget about that $5 latte?
