Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Journalists do their jobs without much fanfare or recognition. In those rare moments when their work is singled out and heralded, the notoriety can boost their profile, their bottom line and their opportunities to take on bigger challenges. This story is about what happens when some out and proud LGBTQ+ journalists shoot for the stars and find out their work never even got to the launchpad. On Thursday, the NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists announced the winners of its 2022 Excellence in Journalism Awards . It was cause for both celebration and consternation; Not because of any controversy over who was selected, but because the group made no mention of winners in four categories: Excellence in Blogging ; HIV/AIDS ; health/fitness ; and, The Al Neuharth Award for Innovation in Investigative Journalism. Those who paid fees, ranging from $15 to $40 for each entry, made it known in a Google Group of … [Read more...] about LGBTQ+ Journalists Group Withholds Awards, Keeps Entry Money

They Inherited Billions Upon Billions: Meet America’s Richest Heirs
One of them, Rob Walton, just led a family group to bid $4.65 billion for the Denver Broncos NFL team. Here are the other heirs that rank the highest on Forbes’ list. A shock ran through the sporting world last week when a group led by Walmart heir Rob Walton won the bidding war for the Denver Broncos NFL team with a $4.65 billion offer . The eye-popping sum made the deal the most expensive sports team purchase in history and turned a spotlight on the man at the center of it all: the typically low-profile Walton. The eldest son of Walmart founder Sam Walton, he inherited his fortune and served as Walmart’s chairman for 23 years. Now worth $57.2 billion, he is the 15th richest person in America and the fifth richest U.S. heir. A handful of Rob Walton’s relatives are among America’s richest people as well. Founded in 1962 by Sam and his brother James “Bud” Walton, Walmart, the country’s largest retailer, is still about half owned by members of the family. Seven have … [Read more...] about They Inherited Billions Upon Billions: Meet America’s Richest Heirs
Wall Street faces billion-dollar losses on sinking buyout debt
- A + A (June 23): Investment bankers in the US and Europe are bracing for potentially billions of dollars in total losses on big-ticket leveraged buyouts as they struggle to offload risky corporate debt that’s plunging in value amid a sweeping market selloff. The biggest hit, which could amount to about US$1 billion, may come from the take-private of Citrix Systems Inc, which a group of lenders led by Bank of America Corp, Credit Suisse Group AG and Goldman Sachs Group Inc signed in January, according to people with knowledge of the deals and the terms at which banks underwrote them. Each of the three lead banks could face losses in excess of US$100 million, said the people, who asked not to be identified when discussing private transactions. With the Federal Reserve rushing to hike interest rates at the fastest pace in decades, credit risk premiums are surging far beyond levels banks had negotiated with private equity firms during the halcyon days of cheap … [Read more...] about Wall Street faces billion-dollar losses on sinking buyout debt
Introducing The Forbes CMO Hall Of Fame
By Seth Matlins Managing Director, Forbes CMO Network T o mark the 10th Anniversary of the Forbes World’s Most Influential CMOs list, we have created The Forbes CMO Hall of Fame, recognizing those chief marketers who have appeared, or would have in 2022, on the list at least five times since its inception. Moving forward, on what would be the fifth year of a CMO’s inclusion on the list, they, too, will become part of The Forbes CMO Hall of Fame. For our initial 18 inductees—and all those who will follow in time—induction recognizes their enduring influence and impact on the brands and businesses they steward, on our industry and, often, the cultural landscape itself. With a nod to the astrological definition of “influence” offered in the first paragraph, these are marketing’s stars. But unlike those ethereal and distant bodies that had imagined influence over our lives, these Hall of Famers have exerted an influence that is concrete and often profound. We salute them. … [Read more...] about Introducing The Forbes CMO Hall Of Fame
Here’s How Rupert Murdoch Became Eight Times Richer Than Donald Trump
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin It’s been a rocky few weeks for one of the most stable relationships in cable news. As the animus grows between Fox News founder Rupert Murdoch and President Donald Trump, so do the rumors that they will one day be competitors in the market for conservative news. If Trump actually wanted to start a media business, he’d presumably have to make a significant investment, which could be challenging, given his current lack of liquidity and pile of debt. Competing with Murdoch would be even tougher. Sure, Trump previously made some money in television. But the vast majority of his $2.5 billion fortune comes from real estate, the business his father taught him. Murdoch, who started with less than the President, is now worth nearly eight times as much, $19 billion, with a media empire that circles the globe. Murdoch’s story begins with just a single local newspaper in Adelaide, Australia, which he inherited from his … [Read more...] about Here’s How Rupert Murdoch Became Eight Times Richer Than Donald Trump

Recognizing the 50 Most Influential CMOs in the World By Seth Matlins , Managing Director, Forbes CMO Network Additional reporting by Diane Brady , Emmy Lucas , Olivia Peluso , Lauren Debter , Isabel Lord , Katherine Dunn T wo hundred years before it was first used as a verb, “influence” was a noun denoting the stars’ ability to affect human lives and destinies. Today, we consider “influence” less astrologically and more practically, focusing on the chief marketers who wield it to shape the character and destinies of the brands and businesses they help steward. The link between marketing and influence has always been inextricable. After all, a chief marketer’s job is about nothing more than it is the influencing of attitudes and behaviors in … [Read more...] about The Forbes World’s Most Influential CMOs List: 2022
Abortion And The Supreme Court: A Decision For LGBTQ+ Americans, Too
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin This story has been updated . Now that the U.S. Supreme Court has finally announced its long-awaited and dreaded decision that leaked last month , restricting abortion rights by overturning the landmark Roe v. Wade decision , much of the news coverage will be centered around women, specifically, cisgender women. That’s logical, and not unexpected, especially since women number 167.5 million, a clear majority of Americans, five million more people than those who identify as male. Many people, even some members of the LGBTQ+ population, see this issue as primarily impacting straight cisgender women. So why talk about anyone else? Here’s why: Not all the cisgender women getting pregnant are straight. More than half of LGB people say they’re bisexual, according to the Williams Institute at the U.C.L.A School of Law , and about 3.5% of all Americans say they’re lesbian, gay or bi. Even though research … [Read more...] about Abortion And The Supreme Court: A Decision For LGBTQ+ Americans, Too
