Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Journalists do their jobs without much fanfare or recognition. In those rare moments when their work is singled out and heralded, the notoriety can boost their profile, their bottom line and their opportunities to take on bigger challenges. This story is about what happens when some out and proud LGBTQ+ journalists shoot for the stars and find out their work never even got to the launchpad. On Thursday, the NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists announced the winners of its 2022 Excellence in Journalism Awards . It was cause for both celebration and consternation; Not because of any controversy over who was selected, but because the group made no mention of winners in four categories: Excellence in Blogging ; HIV/AIDS ; health/fitness ; and, The Al Neuharth Award for Innovation in Investigative Journalism. Those who paid fees, ranging from $15 to $40 for each entry, made it known in a Google Group of … [Read more...] about LGBTQ+ Journalists Group Withholds Awards, Keeps Entry Money

Here’s what the new TDS rule means for social media influencers
Content creators are making calls to tax experts, chartered accountants and influencer marketing agencies to understand what a new clause, Section 194R in the Income-tax Act which is applicable to social media influencers, means for them. Ocean Sharma, an e-sports player with an Instagram following of 328,000, is reaching out to his CA friends to find out more about the new provision which mandates tax deducted at source (TDS) on freebies influencers receive from businesses for sales promotion. It was Budget 2022 -23 that had brought in the provision of TDS at 10 percent for any person providing any benefit or perquisite exceeding Rs 20,000 in a year to a resident arising from the business or profession of such resident. For influencers, this means that they will have to disclose the free samples they receive from brands or companies while filing their income tax return and TDS will be applicable if the freebies are retained by them since such items will be deemed a … [Read more...] about Here’s what the new TDS rule means for social media influencers
CREATING CONTENT FOR ALTERNATIVE DIGITAL MEDIA
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Most producers focus on producing content for full-length films or television series, which creates a glut of producers (supply) compared to potential distributors of that content (demand). This imbalance leads to inevitable results under the law of supply and demand, putting producers at a distinct disadvantage. Given the bourgeoning means of distribution in this digital age, producers would gain an advantage if they focused on creating content for alternative platforms. I routinely hear from budding producers with grand plans for the next “Star Wars” franchise before they get their feet wet with smaller projects, which is just not going to happen. If they gained traction and credibility by proving their chops by producing content for alternative platforms, they would have more leverage in later creating film and TV content if that is their desire. One way to gain traction is to create shorts that can be shown on social … [Read more...] about CREATING CONTENT FOR ALTERNATIVE DIGITAL MEDIA
TikTok promises to stop hidden ads after consumer groups complain
BRUSSELS: TikTok is promising to do a better job at protecting users from hidden ads, following complaints from consumer protection groups that users, particularly the app's millions of teenage fans, are not aware that many videos try to sell them something. The EU Commission has announced that, after more than a year of talks, the makers of what is currently the world's most downloaded app have agreed to adapt their approach to EU rules and let users know when they are watching an ad. In future, consumers will be able to recognise all types of advertising on TikTok, said Didier Reynders, the responsible EU commissioner. However TikTok is still refusing to stop personalising ads for children, consumer protection authorities say. TikTok's success, which has seen it downloaded more than a billion times on Android phones alone, has been accompanied by much criticism. Following concerns that child abusers were using the app, beloved by teenagers, for grooming, TikTok has improved … [Read more...] about TikTok promises to stop hidden ads after consumer groups complain

Ahead of the Supreme Court’s Roe decision, social media is rife with anti-abortion misinformation
On May 2, just hours before Politico published a leaked Supreme Court draft opinion to overturn Roe v. Wade , the anti-abortion group Focus on the Family released a series of alarmist ads on Facebook and Instagram. They contain assorted motifs from a now-familiar playbook of anti-abortion canon: In one, the words “I’M ALIVE” accompany a bright-eyed infant’s photographed image; in another, an exhortation to “help a vulnerable mom choose LIFE!” is stamped over a baby’s feet. But all are accompanied by the same fear-mongering caption (“Scared. Overwhelmed. Hopeless. These emotions and more pulsate through an abortion-minded woman.”) and plea for money (“Just $60 saves a life!”). advertisement advertisement The ads would appear to violate Facebook and Instagram parent company Meta’s policy against misinformation in advertisements: Research debunks a link between abortion and negative mental health outcomes either … [Read more...] about Ahead of the Supreme Court’s Roe decision, social media is rife with anti-abortion misinformation
