Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin At the 2022 FIFA World Cup, a little over two months ago, Saudi Arabia's Salem Al-Dawsari scored the goal that defeated Argentina in the opening game of Group C. Saudi Arabia didn’t pick up any more points in that group, and Argentina went on to win the tournament but the country, and Al-Dawsari, had their rare moment in the spotlight on football's global stage. Or maybe not so rare. At the latest FIFA Club World Cup, Saudi Arabian football is upsetting the odds once again and, once again, Al-Dawsari is the player scoring the goals to help it do so. In Tangier, Morroco, on Tuesday night Al-Dawsari’s cub side, Al-Hilal, knocked Brazilian giants Flamengo out of the Club World Cup. Flamengo were favorites to reach the final along with Real Madrid who play Egyptian side Al Ahly in the other semifinal. Right from the start, it was evident that Al-Hilal would be no pushovers, and the first shock came when Romanian … [Read more...] about Saudi Arabia And Al-Dawsari Shock South America Again As Al-Hilal Knock Flamengo Out Of Club World Cup

Mary Earps Becomes First English Goalkeeper Shortlisted For The Best FIFA Awards
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Manchester United's Mary Earps has today been announced as among the top three goalkeepers in the world after making the final shortlist for The Best FIFA Awards. She is the first-ever English goalkeeper, either male or female, to achieve this feat. Earps, England's ever-present goalkeeper during their victory at the UEFA Women's Euro last summer, has been shortlisted alongside Lyon's Champions League winning goalkeeper, Christiane Endler of Chile, and Chelsea's Ann-Katrin Berger. The three other players initially nominated last month were VfL Wolfsburg's Merle Frohms, Chicago Red Stars' Alyssa Naeher and Barcelona's Sandra Paños. In 2020, Earps' current international understudy, Ellie Roebuck of Manchester City was on the six-player longlist for The Best FIFA Women's Goalkeeper Award but ultimately failed to make the top three, finishing sixth with just five ranking points, nineteen behind winner Sarah Bouhaddi. … [Read more...] about Mary Earps Becomes First English Goalkeeper Shortlisted For The Best FIFA Awards
The Kansas City Chiefs Are Beginning And Ending Season At State Farm Stadium
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Following the Kansas City Chiefs’ 44-21 victory against the Arizona Cardinals in Week One, several of the Chiefs defensive backs sauntered back to the buses at State Farm Stadium. Before those buses whisked them off to the airport, their position coach, Dave Merritt, told them to remember the stadium. “We’re going to be back here,” Merritt said. “We mentioned it back then. Praise God — then it came true.” Indeed the Chiefs’ season has come full circle in blessed fashion. They will end it where they started it — at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., when they face the Philadelphia Eagles there on Sunday in Super Bowl LVII. In their impressive 14-3 campaign, the Chiefs’ win against the Cardinals on Sept. 11 represented their largest margin of victory. Patrick Mahomes, a spokesman for the insurance company with the naming rights to the stadium , threw for a season-high five touchdowns, and the Chiefs were … [Read more...] about The Kansas City Chiefs Are Beginning And Ending Season At State Farm Stadium

Central Banks’ Buying Binge Boosted 2022 Global Gold Demand to 11-Year High
KEY TAKEAWAYS Buying from central banks reached the highest level since 1967. Investment demand also increased; ETF sales declined. The price rebound that began late in the year has continued in 2023. Global gold demand, fed by the largest central bank purchases in more than a half-century, surged to the highest level since 2011 last year despite reduced consumption by the metal's largest buying segment: jewelers. The London-based World Gold Council reported that gold demand in 2022 increased 18% to 4,741 metric tons. The world's central banks accounted for about a quarter of that amount, 1,136 metric tons, 152% more than 450 million metric tons in 2021. The buying binge from central banks reflected their desire to increase exposure to an asset historically viewed as a consistent store of value and a hedge against inflation and financial market turbulence. Global inflation surged last year, with U.S. inflation hitting 40-year highs, causing central banks around … [Read more...] about Central Banks’ Buying Binge Boosted 2022 Global Gold Demand to 11-Year High
2022 Cannabis In Review And 2023 Opportunity Outlook
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The cannabis industry - both domestic and international in scope, and comprised of two substantial subsectors: marijuana and hemp - started last year off strong. Namely, with a splash of high-profile M&A activity in January and February. There was tremendous promise for growing the market. As we entered second quarter of 2022, the hope for a fruitful Q2 faded. By Q3, it was full-fledged retreat, with many of the industry investment conferences refusing to even consider seminar presentations or panels regarding workouts, receiverships or other proactive measures designed to protect or mitigate the poor economic conditions surrounding the industry and many of its operators. There was a concerted effort to “keep it positive” after the industry had been called “recession proof” and designated as an “essential business,” while enjoying record high sales numbers and revenues. Things were good — until reality set in. I … [Read more...] about 2022 Cannabis In Review And 2023 Opportunity Outlook

Light Field Lab Raises $50M To Bring SolidLight Holograms Into The Real World
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Once or twice a year I see something that really makes me go “wow.” Light Field Lab’s did it to me twice, first in 2021 , and just last week. During my last visit to Light Field Lab, I saw my first true digital hologram— it was as real as anything else in the room. Their SolidLight displays are a completely new method of creating 3D objects that appear to be real and placing them in the physical world. They look real to the eye, but are formed with nothing but light. No glasses are required to see them, which is why their SolidLight naked-eye holograms were named one of the Best Inventions of 2022 by TIME. The CEO of Light Field Lab, Jon Karafin, ushered me in to meet the newest member of the Light Field Lab team, the disembodied head of an Aztec-style deity which introduced itself as the “Creator of Light.” He wanted to talk about the formation of the universe, making me think our interaction was scripted, but when we … [Read more...] about Light Field Lab Raises $50M To Bring SolidLight Holograms Into The Real World
It’s not just Manchester City. Financial football is becoming more prevalent
Hassane Kamara of Watford FC looks dejected following their side's defeat in the Premier League match between Manchester City and Watford at Etihad Stadium on April 23, 2022 in Manchester, England. (Photo by Alex Livesey/Getty Images) Hassane Kamara is a high-octane defender at Watford FC in England. He was the club’s player of the year last season despite only joining in January 2022. He’s also emblematic of the financial engineering available to football clubs through the increasingly popular multi-club ownership model. Watford was relegated from the Premier League last summer and Kamara was sold to Udinese of Italy for a profit of about £12 million ($14.4 million). That looked like a great trade — but even better was that Udinese, which is owned by the same Italian family that owns Watford, immediately loaned the player back. No rules were broken and Watford Chairman Scott Duxbury was upfront about the motives, telling the club’s website that the deal aimed to balance … [Read more...] about It’s not just Manchester City.
