Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin When Melissa Daimler , Chief Learning Officer at Udemy, and an expert on developing positive and productive company cultures, sat down to write a book on the topic, she had already reviewed every book, article, and research paper she could get her hands on dedicated to the subject. One thing that stood out to her was a growing frustration building as she read the many definitions of “organizational culture.” Too many treated it as a nebulous, undefined thing that sat solely in HR’s domain. In her view, there was not enough that existed on the topic of intentionally designing culture in a workplace—and, as if to mirror that desire for intentionality, she went out and wrote that book herself. The result is ReCulturing: Design Your Company Culture to Connect with Strategy and Purpose for Lasting Success . The Gilded Age For Modern Travelers: What It’s Like To Stay At The St. Regis New York
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin At the turn of the century, New York served as the epicenter of America’s Gilded Age. Those who have seen the period drama know that city socialite Caroline Astor hosted lavish parties at her Fifth Avenue mansion. One of her five children, Colonel John Jacob “Jack” Astor IV, went on to become one of the wealthiest men in America. He pursued the family business, including the development of grand hotels, and in so doing, left travelers 118 years later with a glimpse of a bygone era at The St. Regis New York . The French Beaux-Arts style hotel debuted on September 4th, 1904. Some historians consider the inn for the upper crust the apogee of Astor’s career. Unfortunately, his life was cut short at 47. He died in the sinking of the RMS Titanic in 1912, though not before helping his young, pregnant wife escape on a lifeboat. Writers often recount this story in profiles of the hotel, though I choose to mention it not … [Read more...] about The Gilded Age For Modern Travelers: What It’s Like To Stay At The St. Regis New York

WHO is renaming monkeypox and wants your help
- A + A (Aug 13): The World Health Organization (WHO) is asking for the public’s help in renaming the monkeypox virus, part of an ongoing effort to discourage harmful misconceptions associated with the current name. “WHO is holding an open consultation for a new disease name for monkeypox. Anyone wishing to propose new names can do so,” the organisation said in a statement. Assigning names to viruses normally falls under WHO jurisdiction, but the organisation is allowing people to submit ideas through an online portal, according to the statement. The announcement comes nearly two months after the WHO said it was planning to rename the virus, following demands from international scientists and public health officials who said the current name encourages harmful stigma. In previous outbreaks, monkeypox has been associated with rodents. Some local health departments are already calling it by different names — in Chicago, the public health office uses MPV, for example. … [Read more...] about WHO is renaming monkeypox and wants your help
The Simple Habit That Will Help You Get More Out Of Every Meeting
It's a typical Monday morning in corporate America. You grab a cup of coffee and head to your desk to login for the day. You glance over your inbox to see if there is anything time sensitive before opening up your calendar to see what meetings are on the agenda. And as usual, it's back to back meetings . You have a meeting with one of your vendors at ten to discuss supply issues. A marketing meeting at eleven to go over the new ad creatives. A 1-on-1 with a key team member at noon....and so on and so forth. You are so booked in fact, that you may have to turn your one o'clock into a working lunch. So all in all a typical Monday. The only thing worse than spending all your time in meetings is realizing that at the end of the day those meetings didn't really produce a lot of value for your business or your team. There was a lot of discussion, a few takeaways but ultimately you will end up meeting again in a few days to go over the same material you just went over with very … [Read more...] about The Simple Habit That Will Help You Get More Out Of Every Meeting
