- A + A PUTRAJAYA (Aug 14): On Monday (Aug 15), the country’s highest court is scheduled to hear former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s appeal against his conviction and sentence for misappropriation of RM42 million of SRC International Sdn Bhd funds. It is Najib’s final appeal after a three-man bench of the Court of Appeal on Dec 8 last year upheld the Pekan MP’s conviction and sentence of 12-year jail and RM210 million fine imposed on him by then High Court Judge Datuk Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali on July 28, 2020. It is understood that the Federal Court will first hear Najib’s application to adduce new evidence in the SRC case, in his bid to ultimately seek a retrial. If Najib fails in this application, the Federal Court is expected to proceed with the hearing of Najib’s appeal against his conviction and sentence. Not appropriate to hold GE15 next year, says Ahmad Zahid
- A + A KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 14): Barisan Nasional (BN) Chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi views it as inappropriate to hold the 15th general election (GE15) next year, due to economic factors and a possible rise in inflation rate. “I am confident that it will be held this year because there are many indicators pointing in that direction, I think it is most suitable for us to hold it (GE15) this year," he said when met by reporters after officiating at the closing of Wanita BN Convention at the World Trade Centre (WTC) here on Sunday (Aug 14). Buying interest boosts ringgit against US dollar
- A + A KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 15): The ringgit opened higher against the US dollar on Monday (Aug 15), as buying interest for the local note continued, backed by encouraging economic growth data and easing sentiment for the greenback due to the latest inflation data, analysts said. At 9 am, the local currency had risen to 4.4430/4480, versus the greenback from last Friday’s close at 4.4435/4455. According to reports, given the positive gross domestic product growth of 8.9% in the second quarter of 2022 (2Q22), Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz expects that Malaysia’s growth will continue to accelerate in 3Q22, driven by private consumption. Najib and his new team of lawyers -- Hisyam Teh Poh Teik, along with Liew Teck Huat and Rueben Mathivaranam -- will try and impress upon the apex court bench the need for a re-trial.
