Sri Mulyani calls for ‘level playing field’ through fintech policy approach

November 19, 2020 by www.thejakartapost.com

Adrian Wail Akhlas (The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Jakarta   ● Thu, November 19, 2020 Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati has called for fair competition in the financial technology (fintech) industry to support economic growth while raising concerns over potential domination by bigger companies. The minister pointed to the absence of a “level playing field” in the fintech industry and said that as fintech startups grew, they were usually acquired by even bigger companies. “There will never be a level playing field because the bigger the company, the bigger their capital and liquidity to dominate the market. […] It is going to be difficult for new entrants to establish their presence,” she told a forum held by Bloomberg on Wednesday. to Read Full Story SUBSCRIBE NOW Starting from IDR 55,500/month Unlimited access to our web and app content e-Post daily digital newspaper No advertisements, no interruptions Privileged access to our events and … [Read more...] about Sri Mulyani calls for ‘level playing field’ through fintech policy approach

FBI searches Florida home of former US president Trump

August 10, 2022 by www.thejakartapost.com

Brian Ellsworth and Sarah N. Lynch (Reuters) (The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Florida, United States   ● Wed, August 10 2022 Former United States president Donald Trump said FBI agents raided his Mar-a-Lago estate on Monday and broke into his safe in what his son acknowledged was part of an investigation into Trump's removal of official presidential records from the White House to his Florida resort. The unprecedented search of a former president's home would mark a significant escalation into the records investigation, which is one of several probes Trump is facing from his time in office and in private business. The US Justice Department declined to comment on the search, which Trump in a statement called a raid and said involved a "large group of FBI agents." The FBI's headquarters in Washington and its field office in Miami both declined comment. to Read Full Story SUBSCRIBE NOW Starting from IDR 55,500/month Unlimited access to our web and app content … [Read more...] about FBI searches Florida home of former US president Trump

China seeking industry feedback on home-grown C919 jet as certification nears

August 9, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A BEIJING/SYDNEY (Aug 9): China's aviation regulator is seeking industry feedback on special conditions for the home-grown C919 aircraft, it said on Tuesday, in a sign that certification of the narrow-body jet designed to rival Airbus and Boeing is edging closer. In dozens of technical documents, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) has set out special conditions for the C919 in areas like flight envelope protection and flight operations under icing conditions, according to a statement on its website. Special conditions are additional airworthiness standards prescribed by the regulator when current regulations do not contain adequate or appropriate safety standards due to novel or unusual design features. Aviation regulators in the United States and Europe also regularly issue such conditions on new Airbus and Boeing jets as part of the certification process. The CAAC has invited public comment on the C919 special conditions over the next 15 … [Read more...] about China seeking industry feedback on home-grown C919 jet as certification nears

China orders surprise audit of US$3 trillion trust industry

August 9, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A (Aug 9): China’s top auditor is conducting a review of the US$3 trillion trust industry, paving the way for a potential overhaul of a key shadow banking sector where losses on property loans are mounting. In an unscheduled move, the National Audit Office — which previously led an examination of bank exposures to Jack Ma’s Ant Group Co — has for the past month been inspecting the books of at least 20 trust firms, including the top five, to gauge the risks they pose to financial stability, according to people familiar with the matter. The firms are being asked to report on their risky loans to developers and any plans to dispose of them, the people said, asking not to be named as they’re not authorised to speak publicly. The audit office is expected to submit its conclusions to policy makers in Beijing, who may decide on the future reforms of the sector, the people said. While it is unclear what regulatory action the scrutiny will spur, the move illustrates … [Read more...] about China orders surprise audit of US$3 trillion trust industry

Supporters await a convoy carrying US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi outside the Grand Hyatt hotel in Taipei, Taiwan, on Tuesday, Aug 2, 2022. US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi landed in Taiwan on Aug 2 evening, in defiance of Chinese threats, a trip that would make her the highest-ranking American politician to visit the island in 25 years. - A + A (Aug 9): House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s swing through Asia aimed to convey the US’s “strong and unshakable” support for the region. It ended up leaving many countries in stunned silence, as China conducted unprecedented military drills around Taiwan. Opinion: Biden’s Afghanistan exit decision looks even worse a year later

(CNN) In 1961, after a CIA-backed invasion of Cuba failed spectacularly, President John F. Kennedy said of the Bay of Pigs fiasco, "Victory has 100 fathers and defeat is an orphan." Peter Bergen Last week, President Joe Biden took a victory lap when he announced that the US had tracked down and killed its most wanted terrorist, al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, who was living in a house in Kabul, Afghanistan. Don't expect a similar celebration on August 30, the first anniversary of the US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan, which ended the longest war in American history. Any realistic assessment of that action shows that it … [Read more...] about Opinion: Biden’s Afghanistan exit decision looks even worse a year later

Nevertheless, I feel fairly safe in predicting that WNBA star Brittney Griner will not serve all nine years of her sentence by a Russian court for drug possession and smuggling. Gene Seymour It's not that much of a stretch to imagine this coming true, especially when recapping the basis for that charge: two vape cartridges of hashish oil found in Griner's luggage at a Moscow airport in February. Nine years? For two cartridges? The maximum sentence is 10 years , and at least Griner didn't get that.
