Sri Lanka will hold a donor conference with China, India and Japan as it seeks overseas assistance to find a way out of its worst economic crisis in decades, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told parliament on June 22. "We need the support of India, Japan and China, who have been historic allies," he said. Sri Lanka will call China, India and Japan to a donor conference to drum up more foreign assistance and present an interim budget in August, the prime minister said on June 22, amid ongoing negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The island nation of 22 million people is struggling with its worst economic crisis in seven decades, unable to import essentials including food, fuel and medicines because of a severe shortage of foreign exchange. An interim budget will be presented in August, seeking to put public finances on a more sustainable path and increase funds to the poor who have been hardest hit, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told parliament. … [Read more...] about Crisis-hit Sri Lanka plans donor conference with China, India and Japan

Cricket-‘Extreme spin’ of Sri Lanka ODI pitches great preparation for tests: Warner
(Reuters) - Australia opener David Warner said the "extreme" spinning pitches in Sri Lanka during their one-day international series defeat provided them with the ideal preparation for their upcoming test matches. The hosts beat Australia by four runs in the fourth ODI in Colombo on Tuesday to take an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series. Sri Lanka went into the match with four frontline spinners and no specialist seam bowler on a wicket that had been used during Sunday's third match. Warner, who fell on 99 during Australia's chase, said the spin was "bit more extreme" but nothing that the touring side had not expected or not prepared for. "These wickets are challenging," he told reporters. "We were always expecting turning wickets and it's fantastic preparation for us. We absolutely love the fact that they're playing on the wickets back-to-back, that's what we want, we can't get that practice in the nets – the nets are green. "For us it's great practice out … [Read more...] about Cricket-‘Extreme spin’ of Sri Lanka ODI pitches great preparation for tests: Warner
Sri Lanka to limit fuel for private vehicles as fuel suppliers delay shipments
COLOMBO, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka will not receive shipments of petrol, diesel and crude oil, scheduled for this week and next week, Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera said on Saturday. The minister said that suppliers have informed state-owned fuel importer and distributor Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) that they will not make the scheduled deliveries due to banking and logistic reasons. Wijesekera said public transportation, power generation and industries would be given priority until the next shipments arrive. Therefore, limited stocks of diesel and petrol will be distributed to a few gas stations throughout next week. The minister urged the general public not to queue up for fuel. He also said that refinery operations will also be halted until the next crude shipment arrives. "We are working with all new and existing suppliers. I apologize for the delay and inconvenience," he said. … [Read more...] about Sri Lanka to limit fuel for private vehicles as fuel suppliers delay shipments
Too Asian To Be Irish, Too Irish To Be Asian
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin There are lots of conversations driven on the impact of intercountry and transracial adoption and many times I see these driven by people who have little to no first-hand experience of this very complex topic. I have seen long conversations (usually lacking nuance) from both people of colour and white people sharing perspectives without actually asking adoptees their perspectives, focusing on centering their views vs those they claim to understand. There is a problem with this because we see it time and time again in diversity and inclusion work. From people making assumptions on what other groups of people need based on their own personal thoughts and experiences, to tech solutions being created without truly listening to those who it affects. Listening vs speaking over is key - it helps us challenge bias, put friction in before decision making and enable us to truly reach people of all backgrounds. As a transracial adoptee … [Read more...] about Too Asian To Be Irish, Too Irish To Be Asian
Alternative Views: ‘Chickenomics’ highlights eroding value of ringgit
This article first appeared in Forum, The Edge Malaysia Weekly, on June 27, 2022 - July 03, 2022. - A + A Come July 1, Malaysians will further feel the effects of inflation. Price controls on chicken and eggs — the cheapest sources of protein — and higher-end cooking oil will be relaxed. So far, Malaysians by and large have been relatively sheltered from the effects of rising global inflation. Other than eating out, which has become significantly more expensive, households have absorbed the increasing prices of goods and services well. Thanks to subsidies and control mechanisms, most of the commonly consumed items and utilities such as gas for cooking and petrol are in adequate supply. Unlike in Sri Lanka, Malaysians do not have to queue in long lines for petrol or cooking gas cylinders. In situations where price controls are not effective, the government intervenes in the supply-demand dynamics with measures to divert food to the domestic market, … [Read more...] about Alternative Views: ‘Chickenomics’ highlights eroding value of ringgit
