Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Is it time for us contrarians to “buy the dip” in bank stocks? We’re drowning in big bank-scare headlines. Silicon Valley Bank (SIVB VB ) knuckled under in days, Signature Bank (SBNY) wasn’t too far behind, and across the pond, Credit Suisse (CS) needed a buyout bailout from rival UBS (UBS) . The next bank run, however, won’t be with the big boys . Too big to fail, baby . Here, we’ll find not only government help but also secure yields of up to 5.1%—trading at a discount, no less. Why the big guys? Well let me show you. Last week, my software firm received this email from one of our vendors: “Brett, Just wanted to give you our new banking details. We’re out of SVB; we’re moving to JPM.” JPM for the win. And they’re not the only big bank benefiting. CNN recently reported that Bank of America BAC (BAC) , Wells Fargo WFC (WFC) and Citigroup C (C) “have all experienced a … [Read more...] about Make Your Own Bank Run On These Blue-Chip Yields

The lie of the hustle
One of the ways that gig companies have been able for years to define their workers as independent contractors is by exploiting the allure of individualism. The contractor has their freedom, the thinking goes, so why would they exchange that for a full-time job with benefits? “These words have gained a strange kind of prestige from downwardly mobile, college-educated tech workers,” said John Patrick Leary, the author of Keywords: The New Language of Capitalism . It was part of what Reddit’s founder, Alexis Ohanian, has called “hustle porn,” cheerleading multiple jobs and their backbreaking exertions, giving a cheerful spin to the full 30% of Americans who do something else for pay in addition to their full-time jobs, according to an NPR/Marist survey. Hustling and nimbleness and the like implied, however, that there is a slinky joy in picking up gear at a studio and dropping it off across town or selling CBD oil part time. Once called drably “another job,” these … [Read more...] about The lie of the hustle

CounterCraft is No. 35 on Fast Company’s list of the World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies of 2023 . Explore the full list of companies that are reshaping industries and culture. Weeks before Russia invaded Ukraine last year, hackers accessed a financial institution’s computers and set them up to initiate a cyberattack on Ukrainian government websites. What the hackers didn’t know: Their efforts took place in a fake network designed as a detection environment by Spanish startup CounterCraft , which was able to protect its client’s real computers and share information about the incident with U.S. authorities. “Being weeks ahead of the actual window of attack was a very useful place to be,” says Dan Brett, CounterCraft’s cofounder and chief strategy officer. As a Black woman in an industry—wellness—that’s overwhelmingly white, I know what it’s like to be in classes or scrolling social media accounts that weren’t created with me in mind. Genuine care requires us to clarify where we’re focusing our attention, which allows us to have realistic expectations about impact and accountability. I know that there are ways I can better advocate for myself, and I also know that I live within societal and cultural ecosystems designed not to hear me as a Black woman. Self-care helps us cope with our present external realities, but it won’t always directly change them. As BIPOC leaders, we face unique challenges. Here are some ways to care for yourself amidst those challenges. Ditch the perfectionism The more marginalized identities you have, the more you’ll likely grapple with perfectionism, because we’re socialized to believe that the norm, and those who lead it, look and operate differently than us. For many of us who are … [Read more...] about Self-care isn’t enough. 3 ways BIPOC leaders can combat burnout
US to Take Years to Refill Its Strategic Petroleum Reserve
Refilling the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve may take years, U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said this week, reversing plans the Biden administration announced late last year to repurchase at lower prices oil it sold from the reserve in 2022.
