World Cancer Day 2023 | Precision oncology is a new way of looking at cancer treatment: Dr Sewanti Limaye
Dr Sewanti Limaye, Director, Precision Oncology, HN Reliance Hospital and Research Centre. Cancer is among the most researched diseases in the world. For most cancers, early detection is rare, and there isn’t enough consensus among oncologists, researchers and practitioners of non-Western medicine on its exact causes. Overall, a few broad causes have been conclusively established: Cancer may arise as a consequence of genomic abnormalities such as mutations, or when the body’s immune system weakens or collapses, or due to external assaults to the body such as tobacco use, exposure to chemicals and radiation and certain infections. But much like the human body, much of this disease is a mystery. There is no one cause and there is no one cure. As Pulitzer Prize-winning author and oncologist Siddhartha Mukherjee has written in his cancer magnum opus The Emperor of All Maladies , “That this seemingly simple mechanism—cell growth without barriers—can lie at the heart of this … [Read more...] about World Cancer Day 2023 | Precision oncology is a new way of looking at cancer treatment: Dr Sewanti Limaye

Phuket Live Wire: Still dreaming about 3G
PHUKET: The easiest way to get 3G service in Phuket involves a trek to the True office in Phuket Town, in the little building in front of Robinson’s department store. There you will find several people who understand 3G (believe me, that’s quite an accomplishment), and they’ll set you up with 3G service. If you already have a True SIM card, and a dongle, 3G iPad or 3G capable smartphone, you only need to enable the 3G service from True. You can keep your old phone number. 3G will run about 800 baht per month, in addition to your regular phone charges. But you’ll be limited to three gigabytes in total data transmission during any particular month. If you go over the allotment, True automatically drops you back to plain old everyday GPRS service, which is painfully slow. Three gig is enough for moderate web surfing and email work, but won’t even scratch the surface if you download torrents or movies. This smartphone app detects if users are having a stroke
A new app might soon be able to detect stroke symptoms in its users without the help of a physician. The app, called FAST.AI, is still in development and not available to the public, but preliminary research suggests that it can successfully detect facial asymmetry and arm weakness, two common signs of a stroke. FAST.AI uses artificial intelligence to detect these using device footage and sensors. A study was conducted on its efficacy at four major metropolitan stroke centers in Bulgaria, on over 270 patients already identified by physicians to have suffered from strokes. It found that the app could accurately detect facial asymmetry 97% of the time and arm weakness 72% of the time, according to the abstract of the paper being presented at the American Heart Association’s International Stroke Conference next week. The app has also been designed to detect slurred speech, but the accuracy of this feature was not tested in the study. The name of the app comes from the … [Read more...] about This smartphone app detects if users are having a stroke
