Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin At this point, I think the writing is on the wall for what needs to be the next hardware investment for the two biggest brands in gaming, Microsoft and Sony. The Nintendo Switch is a massive, sprawling hit thanks to not just its game library, but its portability. Valve cannot keep up with the demand for the Steam Deck, bringing PC libraries to handheld. Third parties are starting to get involved, like a new device from Verizon, Razor and Qualcomm that was just announced that will stream cloud games, play natively or stream from a console. That last one actually has the Xbox logo at the end of it, implying we are likely to see Xbox Cloud Gaming come to that device, but the point remains, it feels like both Sony and Microsoft, and by proxy their Xbox and PlayStation brands, would be wise to start thinking about their own kind of handheld hardware. For me, it’s not a matter of if this happens, but when. … [Read more...] about Microsoft And Sony Need New Handheld Consoles, So Who Goes First?

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Google Stadia, Google’s long-suffering attempt at a cloud gaming streaming service, is finally dead . After lots of initial hype, a bunch of scaling back, and promises things would get better, Stadia finally comes to rest in the Google graveyard of killed-off products and services, the way many predicted it eventually would. What’s wild about a service like Google Stadia shutting down is that it’s not like a gaming company just ceasing to make certain console hardware. When Stadia does not exist anymore, neither do the game libraries of its players who purchased hundreds or even thousands of dollars worth of titles for use on the service. One of the primary complaints about Stadia was always this “each game sold separately” model. Eventually it did get more and more free games, but not enough, and this problem persisted. However, Google understands that nuking the service and everyone’s cloud gaming libraries is…bad, … [Read more...] about Google Is Killing Stadia, And Refunding Every Purchase Ever Made
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Sony has just launched its PlayStation Stars service in Japan, and it will be expanding outward in a few more weeks. It’s a loyalty program that sure seems like it may have once been an NFT thing, offering “digital collectibles” you can earn and acquire, but Sony swears that the blockchain has nothing to do with this. But, that has now led into a new controversy, one that Japanese PlayStation Stars members have noted. The issue is that one of the tiers, first reported by VGC , appears to give members access to better customer service through Sony. "When contacting PlayStation Customer Support, you will be given priority in the chat order," says a description for a level 4 tier perk, which requires you to buy four full price games from the PlayStation store and earn 128 rare trophies. Tier 4 appears to be the highest level of tier in the loyalty program, given that the official Stars site says there are only four … [Read more...] about PlayStation Stars Is Offering Better Customer Service As A Tier Reward
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin While it’s a great (and necessary) move that Google has chosen to refund all players hardware and software purchases through Google Stadia ahead of the cloud gaming service shutting down, one thing they do not seem to have considered is the effect it has on developers who, up until this very moment, were still making games for the platform. It sounds like Google did not communicate anything about Stadia’s pending shutdown to any developers, presumably to avoid leaks, but that has resulted in a lot of developers, big and small, being thrown into the lurch. The main group this has affected is a whole lot of indie developers who do not really have the resources to develop for extra platforms that are suddenly ceasing to exist. That’s a lot of time and effort and money that could have been saved had they known this was coming. Others still are owed money from Google and now question if they’ll be reimbursed: … [Read more...] about Google’s Stadia Shutdown Has Caught Stadia Developers Totally Off Guard
