Source: AFP SoftBank Group Corp founder and CEO Masayoshi Son discussed on Tuesday a long-term cooperation between chip designer Arm and Samsung Electronics, but did not propose the South Korean firm to invest in the British company, a local media reported on Wednesday. The billionaire, who is making his first visit to Seoul in three years, said earlier that he'd like to talk with Samsung about a "strategic alliance with Arm". The visit comes amid speculation over the potential formation of an industry consortium to invest in Arm, whose technology powers Apple's iPhone and nearly all other smartphones, and ensure its neutrality. At a meeting held on Tuesday which Arm Chief Executive Rene Haas also attended, Son did not propose that Samsung buy a stake in Arm or make a pre-IPO investment, the JoongAng daily newspaper reported on Wednesday, citing unnamed industry sources. SoftBank did not immediately reply to a Reuters' request for comment. Samsung declined to comment. … [Read more...] about SoftBank makes no Arm investment proposal to Samsung: Report

- A + A WASHINGTON (Oct 6): President Joe Biden on Thursday will tout IBM Corp's plans to invest US$20 billion in New York over the next decade in development and manufacturing of semiconductors, mainframe technology, artificial intelligence and quantum computing. The announcement is the latest in a string of investments unveiled since Biden signed the Chips and Science bill in August that funded US$52 billion to subsidize semiconductor chips manufacturing and research. The administration says hefty subsidies for private businesses are necessary because China and the European Union had been awarding billions in incentives to chip companies. Biden has sought to capitalize on the investment announcements ahead of next month's midterm congressional elections. Last month, he traveled to Ohio to speak at the site of Intel Corp's planned US$20 billion semiconductor manufacturing facility. New York's Hudson Valley, home of IBM's Poughkeepsie site, was a manufacturing … [Read more...] about Biden visits New York IBM amid US$20 billion investment

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The global energy complex is in a state of flux, made worse by the war in Ukraine, overzealous European lawmakers and unpredictable oil exporters. Bloomberg reported in August that the Saudis are talking with their OPEC partners about reducing global oil supplies. The move sent prices sharply higher, and shifted the global economy toward recession. Investors should consider buying Equinor ASA (EQNR) , a Norwegian energy producer. Equinor was created in 2007 by the merger of Statoil and the oil and gas operations of Norsk Hydro. The business is 67% owned by the government of Norway through its ministry of petroleum and energy. However, Norway is now an extremely green country. Legislators there are pushing executives at Equinor to move quickly from its primary business of oil and gas development, to green energy, such as offshore wind farms. Unfortunately, Eastern Europe is in the middle of a war in Ukraine. … [Read more...] about Norwegian Oil Giant Leads Surprising Shift To Carbon-Neutral Energy Production
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin I recently joined Market Wrap to chat with Moe Ansari about the market. With most money managers, Joe Sixpack and CNBC now universally bearish, he was keen to hear an original take! The time to dump stocks, I told Moe, was early in the year. Or late ’21. Before the mainstream media even whispered the words bear market . Now that just about everything is 20% down, we have professional stock cheerleaders like The Wall Street Journal lamenting that buying the dip isn’t working . A contrarian sign that this dip should be bought? Perhaps… Moe and I yapped about the Federal Reserve (of course), the doom and gloom mainstream crowd, and my two favorite dividend stocks to buy right now. Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline The stock market broke a historic two-day rally on Wednesday as analysts warned it’s still too early to celebrate, given a rash of looming risks—including incoming corporate reports that are likely to show just how badly deteriorating economic conditions are affecting company earnings. Key Facts The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell nearly 200 points, or 0.6%, to 30,125 by 12:30 p.m. EDT, paring a massive two-day gain of nearly 6%, while the S&P 500 and tech-heavy Nasdaq slumped 0.9% and 1.3%, respectively. “The primary question on many investors’ minds has once again shifted to when the Federal Reserve pivots—not if,” Morgan Stanley strategist Michael Wilson wrote in a note, saying the economy has entered a "danger zone" in which Fed policy has become restrictive enough that financial and economic stress is bound to occur. Wilson says “it’s only a matter of time” before a "fast and furious" … [Read more...] about Stock Market Poised For Bigger Losses As Economy Enters ‘Danger Zone,’ Morgan Stanley Warns

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Key takeaways The Russian stock market tanked after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It has seen its largest subsequent dip after Ukraine successfully went on the offensive, driving Putin to instate an unpopular draft of Russian soldiers. Divestments in the Russian economy and sanctions by Western countries have impeded the Russian stock market throughout the crisis. Even when Russian gas and oil companies have seen minor successes, these have not been enough to bring the MOEX Russia Index up to pre-invasion levels. The Russian stock market has not fared well since the invasion of Ukraine. While this downward tumble was entirely predictable, it may be a sacrifice Putin is willing to endure in order to reach his long-term goals.
