(CNN) A polio case identified in New York last month is "just the very, very tip of the iceberg" and an indication there "must be several hundred cases in the community circulating," a senior official with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told CNN on Wednesday. The case was found In Rockland County, which has a stunningly low polio vaccination rate. Dr. José Romero, director of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, noted that the majority of people with polio don't have symptoms and so can spread the virus without knowing it. "The spread is always a possibility because the spread is going to be silent." Around 1 million children in London offered polio boosters after virus is detected in sewage
(CNN) Children living in London will be offered an extra dose of the polio vaccine following the discovery of poliovirus in sewage in the British capital, health authorities announced Wednesday. The UK Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation said a targeted inactivated polio vaccine booster dose should be offered to all children between the ages of 1 and 9 in all London boroughs. "This will ensure a high level of protection from paralysis and help reduce further spread of the virus," the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said in a statement announcing the move. Around 1 million children of that age live in the London region, according to the most recent data from the UK Office for National Statistics. Polio 101: Signs, symptoms and dangers of an ancient virus The UKHSA said a total of 116 virus isolates were identified in 19 sewage samples collected in London between February and July. Deutsche Bank poised for big win as last Lehman legal fight ends
- A + A (Aug 11): One of the last issues in the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers has been resolved, handing a potentially huge win to a clutch of distressed investors led by Deutsche Bank AG. The UK Supreme Court refused Lehman’s US holding company permission to appeal a ruling that said holders of subordinated notes issued by the defunct investment bank should be paid before other claims. The decision effectively brings to an end years of wrangling over what’s left to pay to creditors some 14 years after its collapse. It could lead to huge payouts for holders of little-known Enhanced Capital Advantaged Preferred Securities issued by Lehman’s UK arm prior to its collapse, which were once considered worthless. The ECAPS issue was one of the very last matters that remained open in Lehman’s long running bankruptcy, in essence deciding in what order some of the final creditors will be paid. Picking clean Lehman’s corpse has kept a legion of accountants, lawyers and … [Read more...] about Deutsche Bank poised for big win as last Lehman legal fight ends

Lack of theater experience not a drawback for Garrett Bolden’s ‘Miss Saigon’ theater debut
Pop-R&B singer Garrett Bolden, who was recently cast in an upcoming production of “Miss Saigon” in Guam, didn’t get to meet his American father—a former member of the United States Navy—until he was 18 years old. And it’s that longing he had as a child, he said, that made him feel connected to the story of the musical. “More than the love story, it’s also about abandonment. I myself experienced … I spent a long time looking for my biological father. Reading the story, I found out that there were so many abandoned children, [after the Vietnam War]. A child knowing who his or her parents creates a big impact. That’s what really touched me,” he said in a recent online press conference. And it was only fitting that he landed the role of John Thomas, the enthusiastic marine, who performs “Bui Doi”—a song about abandoned children by Vietnamese mothers and American soldiers. “It was my audition piece. When I first heard the song, it hit me somewhere because it was so relatable for … [Read more...] about Lack of theater experience not a drawback for Garrett Bolden’s ‘Miss Saigon’ theater debut
1,000 Families To Sue World’s Largest Pediatric Gender Clinic, Lawyer Says
The Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS) at Tavistock, the largest pediatric gender clinic in the world, will be sued by about 1,000 families of children who were allegedly rushed onto puberty blockers at the U.K.-based clinic, attorneys told The Times. The class action medical negligence lawsuit accuses the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust in the U.K. of recklessly prescribing puberty blockers with harmful side effects and unquestioningly affirming the gender identities of children with inadequate analysis of mental health, according to The Times. The suit comes after an independent review of GIDS found the facility to be unsafe for children and the National Health Service announced it would shut the clinic down by 2023 and replace it with more holistic, mental health-centered facilities. “These children have suffered life-changing and, in some cases, irreversible effects of the treatment they received which has resulted in long-term physical and psychological … [Read more...] about 1,000 Families To Sue World’s Largest Pediatric Gender Clinic, Lawyer Says
