Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Dave Wendland, vp strategic relations at HRG , is passionate about the retail industry and optimizing results across the retail supply chain. I began talking about the concept of unboxed retail about five years ago. You may be scratching your head wondering what I mean by “unboxed retail.” The fact of the matter is that shopper behaviors have changed dramatically from their reliance on brick-and-mortar storefronts. Today’s shoppers are interacting with retailers on their phones, through social media, websites and countless other modes. This “unboxed” reality no longer requires traditional retail footprints. This has also created a dilemma for many retail formats anchored on street corners across America. How can they untether their shoppers from legacy shopping and manage the associated logistics of inventory management, fulfillment, returns and customer service? The pandemic certainly put a spotlight on the … [Read more...] about 5 Keys To Success In An Omnichoice And Unboxed Retail World

How TerraCycle Went From Selling Worm Poop to Reforming Recycling Around the World
Garbage: It's a foul business. Tom Szaky , the founder and CEO of TerraCycle, knows that's the popular opinion. He's been asking business students at New York University annually how many of them would like to get into waste management. Not a single one has raised a hand for more than a decade. Szaky understands the resistance. His chosen sector is known not just for being filthy, but also for having upside-down economics, entrenched large players, and high operational costs leading to industry rigidity. But none of those challenges has stopped Szaky from innovating in the field, or from maintaining profits--which is why he's been called the Elon Musk of waste . Over the past two decades, Szaky, 40, has grown TerraCycle from a scrappy fertilizer-in-recycled-packaging business in his New Jersey dorm room to a 550-employee, 20-country trash-management and recycling company, purveyor of recycled content, and foundation for funding waterway cleanup. Now he is building his … [Read more...] about How TerraCycle Went From Selling Worm Poop to Reforming Recycling Around the World
Qatar to kick off World Cup as finals brought forward by one day
- A + A (Aug 12): This year's World Cup in Qatar will start a day earlier than originally scheduled with the opening ceremony now taking place before the host nation kick off the tournament on Sunday, Nov. 20 against Ecuador, world governing body FIFA said on Thursday. The original plan was for the opening ceremony to be held before Qatar's first game on Nov. 21, which would have created the unusual situation of two matches - Senegal v Netherlands and England v Iran - being held before the ceremony. Normally, the ceremony is conducted before the kick-off of the first game of the tournament. Hosts Qatar will now make their World Cup debut against Ecuador at 1900 local time after an opening ceremony at the 60,000-capacity Al Bayt Stadium. The change is in line with the long-standing tradition of opening matches involving hosts or holders. The Group A match between Senegal and Netherlands, originally scheduled to be the tournament opener, has been pushed back by … [Read more...] about Qatar to kick off World Cup as finals brought forward by one day
1,000 Families To Sue World’s Largest Pediatric Gender Clinic, Lawyer Says
The Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS) at Tavistock, the largest pediatric gender clinic in the world, will be sued by about 1,000 families of children who were allegedly rushed onto puberty blockers at the U.K.-based clinic, attorneys told The Times. The class action medical negligence lawsuit accuses the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust in the U.K. of recklessly prescribing puberty blockers with harmful side effects and unquestioningly affirming the gender identities of children with inadequate analysis of mental health, according to The Times. The suit comes after an independent review of GIDS found the facility to be unsafe for children and the National Health Service announced it would shut the clinic down by 2023 and replace it with more holistic, mental health-centered facilities. “These children have suffered life-changing and, in some cases, irreversible effects of the treatment they received which has resulted in long-term physical and psychological … [Read more...] about 1,000 Families To Sue World’s Largest Pediatric Gender Clinic, Lawyer Says

The U.S. Senate and the Italian parliament both approved onWednesday Finland and Sweden’s accession to the 30-member North Atlantic Treaty Organization (Nato). Under Nato membership, which must be ratified by all 30 member states, an attack on one member is an attack against all. “This historic vote sends an important signal of the sustained, bipartisan U.S. commitment to Nato, and to ensuring our Alliance is … [Read more...] about Ukraine warns of new Russian offensive; Sweden, Finland move closer to joining Nato

Researchers oversee vials of SKYCovione’s automatic packaging process | PHOTO: SK Bioscience via The Korea Herald/Asia News Network ANDONG, North Gyeongsang Province — Hundreds of vials were lined up on the belt of a packaging machine at L House, SK Bioscience’s vaccine manufacturing facility in Andong, North Gyeongsang Province on Wednesday afternoon, as the developer of South Korea’s first homegrown COVID-19 vaccine SKYCovione is poised to roll out the vaccine’s first batch by the end of August. A few researchers, who were covered from head to toe with sterilized gear — protective shoes, clothing and hair caps — oversaw the automatic process while others put finishing touches on the packages. On the surface of the packaged products, which were stacked one by one in a yellow plastic box, it read: “SKYCovione Multi-Inj.” “It takes about four months to have a final SKYCovione drug product ready to be rolled out,” said Lee Sang-gyun, general manager of Andong L House and senior … [Read more...] about South Korea’s 1st domestic COVID-19 vaccine ready
In the Amazon, a UN agency has a green mission, but dirty partners
Representative image (Source: Reuters) At the edge of the Colombian Amazon, in an Indigenous village surrounded by oil rigs, the Siona people faced a dilemma. The United Nations Development Program, or UNDP, had just announced a $1.9 million regional aid package. In a village with no running water, intermittent electricity and persistent poverty, any money would mean food and opportunity. But the aid program was part of a partnership between the U.N. agency and GeoPark, the multinational petroleum company. The company holds contracts to drill near the Siona reservation, including one with the government that would expand operations onto what the Siona consider their ancestral land. To the Siona people on the Buenavista reservation, oil drilling is an assault, akin to draining blood from the earth. This collaboration is one example of how one of the world’s largest sustainable development organizations partners with polluters, even those that at times work against the … [Read more...] about In the Amazon, a UN agency has a green mission, but dirty partners

Dozens in China infected with Langya virus found in shrews
(AFP) BEIJING – Dozens of people in China have fallen ill with a new virus that is also found in shrews, a report has said, but there is so far no evidence of human-to-human transmission. The infections were found in China’s eastern Shandong and central Henan provinces, affecting 35 people, according to a report in the New England Journal of Medicine this month. The virus is called Langya henipavirus or LayV, and patients reported symptoms that include fever, fatigue, cough, nausea and headaches. Some people also developed blood cell abnormalities and impaired liver and kidney functions, the report said. Research findings suggested shrews may be a natural reservoir for the pathogen. “There was no close contact or common exposure history among the patients, which suggests that the infection in the human population may be sporadic,” according to the report. But it also cautioned that its sample size “was too small to determine the status of human-to-human … [Read more...] about Dozens in China infected with Langya virus found in shrews
Meme-stock frenzy returns, baffling Wall Street’s ‘smart guys’
Shopping carts outside a Bed Bath & Beyond store in Louisville, Kentucky, U.S., on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2021. Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. is scheduled to release earnings figures on January 7. Retail traders who lurk in forums like Reddit’s WallStreetBets are back to betting against Wall Street pros and the Federal Reserve as rallies for meme stocks like Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. and AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. show shades of last year’s mania. The home-good retailer nearly tripled at one point during its nine-day winning streak while the movie-theater firm capped a 65% rally of its own as speculative pockets of the stock market surge. The pair have powered a basket of 37 meme stocks tracked by Bloomberg higher by 10% over the past week while the most-hated stocks tracked by a Goldman Sachs Group Inc. basket is up roughly 17% over the same period. The resurgence of more speculative areas of the market is likely fueled in part by individual traders willingness to jump … [Read more...] about Meme-stock frenzy returns, baffling Wall Street’s ‘smart guys’
