Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Today Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger held court at the 2022 Berkshire Hathaway BRK.B BRK.A shareholder meeting. I’ve attended the event twice in Omaha. This year I watched on my iPad from a Starbucks SBUX in Ocean City, Maryland. Watching it live in Omaha is better. Yet as always, Buffett and Munger imparted their wisdom as only they can. Here are seven things I learned. 1. Berkshire Earnings Declined 53%, But Not Really The headline number for Q1 2022 was a decline of earnings from $11.71 billion last year to $5.46 billion this year. Dig a bit deeper into the numbers, however, and you realize why Warren Buffett has criticized an accounting rule that requires Berkshire to report unrealized investment gains and losses on its statement of operations. Berkshire’s operating earnings increased year over year. In Q1 2021 the company’s operations earned $7.018 billion (after tax). In the first three … [Read more...] about 8 Things I Learned From The 2022 Berkshire Hathaway Meeting

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin As an archipelago within Western Pacific Ocean, the Republic of Palau has some interesting firsts. It is the location of the world’s first shark sanctuary, which was set forth in September 2009. Then four years later, Palau became home to a designated fully-protected marine sanctuary. Now, the tourism sector of this Pacific Island nation is ushering in another first. Ol’au Palau , a new sustainability initiative, will promote responsible tourism through a gaming app requiring travelers to complete eco-friendly measures. “Palau’s desire for more positive, sustainable and regenerative behavior from visitors is born from necessity, because its economy is inextricably linked to its ecology,” said Jennifer Koskelin Gibbons, co-founder of the Palau Legacy Project and a local Palauan. According to Gibbons, pre-COVID tourism made up 85 percent of Palau’s GDP. Yet while tourism remains essential to Palau, its environmental … [Read more...] about This Tourism App Unlocks Unique Experiences In Palau Through Completing Eco-Friendly Tasks

SHANGHAI/BEIJING (Reuters): Shanghai achieved its long-awaited milestone of three consecutive days with no new Covid-19 cases outside quarantine zones on Tuesday (May 17) but most residents will have to put up with confinement for a while longer before resuming more normal life. For other cities in China that have been under lockdown, three days with no new cases in the community usually means "zero Covid" status and the beginning of the lifting of restrictions. The commercial hub of 25 million set out on Monday its clearest timetable yet for exiting a lockdown now in its seventh week, but the plan was met with scepticism by many residents who have seen isolation extended time and again. "Normality is very far away," said one Shanghai resident still stuck at home. Shanghai plans to resume outdoor activities in stages, with some shops reopening this week, but with most restrictions on movement remaining in place until May 21, after which public transport and other services will … [Read more...] about Shanghai hits prized ‘zero Covid’ status but lockdown lingers
If you are planning to retire in the beautiful and tropical country of Thailand, there are many places which will suit your interests. From up north in Chiang Mai where the air is cooler (during winter), to a tropical oasis in the southern islands, Thailand has it all. Of course, with all things, you will need to get sorted before you come and we are right here to help. Things to think about How much money will I need to retire in Thailand? For example, a retired couple should be able to live quite comfortably on £1,600 (71,000 THB, 2,100 USD) a month, but of course, it depends on your lifestyle. While the cost of living is low in Thailand, it is still important to have a savings of at least £20,000 (890,000 THB, 26,500USD), probably more, depending if you’re getting anything paid to you from outside the kingdom. This can help in the event of unexpected expenses, such as health insurance premiums, purchasing a car, or home repairs. For those in the UK with pensions, … [Read more...] about Key info for those planning to retire in Thailand
Huawei Watch GT 3 Pro huawei I could easily say that the Huawei Watch GT 3 Pro is my favourite smartwatch to date. The watch lasts for two weeks per charge. It has a vibrant, colourful and responsive screen, and a slew of health tracking capabilities. Its lightweight body is comfortable to wear and does not look like a toy. The watch has a very mature look: clean, strong, shiny. Its titanium body and sapphire screen should offer users peace of mind that it won't break or dent due to minor accidents or mishaps. Compared to my previous smartwatches, this is by far the best to wear, even in bed. My previous watch, the heavier TicWatch Pro, is uncomfortable to wear in bed which caused me to stop tracking my sleep after a few days. The GT 3 Pro has a crown knob on the upper right that lets you smoothly scroll up or down the watch's menu. A second button is used to trigger specific exercise tracking, but this can be customised to call up any app on the watch. Moreover, this button … [Read more...] about A new contender emerges
“Whilst Thailand is often nicknamed the ‘land of a thousand 7-elevens’, with a convenience store on just about every corner, there are very few of these in Vietnam, for now.” With the Thai Baht on a high at the moment, along with stricter enforcement of visa rules, some expats say they’ve had enough and are heading to Vietnam, or some other south east Asian country, where they might improve their personal situation. For example, an expat pensioner, on a fixed income, from a country where the Thai baht has risen against your currency, Thailand has become a more expensive option – perhaps impossible to make ends meet anymore with your old pension. The British pound, as just one currency, has gone from around 55 baht to the pound four years ago, to now around 39 baht, a big loss in value. Meanwhile the cost of living in Thailand has risen over the last decade. But Vietnam has its own challenges and, whilst being an amazing place to explore as a tourist, may not be to everyone’s … [Read more...] about So you want to move to Vietnam?
