The world’s first 3D-printed neighborhood now has its first houses
In a rural area on the outskirts of a town in Southern Mexico, a giant, 33-foot-long 3D printer recently built the walls of the first homes in the world’s first 3D-printed neighborhood. advertisement advertisement The 500-square-foot houses were finished with roofs, windows, and interiors last week. New Story, the nonprofit leading the project, believes that the new construction process could be part of the solution for affordable housing in some of the poorest communities in the world. “We feel like we’ve proved what’s possible by bringing this machine down to a rural area in Mexico, in a seismic zone, and successfully printing these first few houses,” says Brett Hagler, CEO and cofounder of New Story. Ningbo’s rise as the world’s largest port has lessons for India
Last year, the world-port-rankings changed when Ningbo-Zhoushan in Southeast China became the largest port in the world. By then, it had built trade channels with over 600 ports spread across 100 countries. The port, which handles all types of cargo - container, liquid and dry bulk – accounted for an annual cargo throughput of over a billion tonnes last year.“The total cargo throughput of Ningbo Zhoushan Port was 1.08 billion metric tonnes in 2018,” said a port official who did not want to be named.Despite the overall slowing of global trade, the official said cargo volumes at Ningo-Zhoushan would be higher this year.Close Ningo-Zhoushan has managed to race past Shanghai (see chart).
