Apple has updated its AirPods wireless earbuds with a new chip that allows for longer talk time, faster connections, and hands-free Siri voice commands. The new AirPods can handle three hours of phone calls, compared to two hours on the old ones–and Apple says its new H1 chip is twice as fast at switching between devices, 50% faster at connecting for phone calls, and 30% less laggy at providing audio for games. Also, instead of having to hit a button for Siri, you can simply say “Hey Siri” aloud. The new AirPods demonstrate how Apple is able to stay ahead of other wireless earbud makers through its custom chips. Most other wireless earbuds rely on Qualcomm chips that are based on aging Bluetooth headset technology. Though Qualcomm announced a new chipset back in January 2018, we’ve yet to hear of any earbuds that actually use them. Meanwhile, a reference design for Alexa integration that Qualcomm announced in October still relies on push-button activation … [Read more...] about Apple’s new AirPods have longer talk time and hands-free Siri
We’ve all been there. You urgently call your bank to ask about an unrecognized withdrawal or unexpected overdraft fee and the voice assistant asks you to repeat your name again and again, as well as your account number, as well as simple words like “representative” or “checking account.” You angrily hang up, slam down your phone, look across the room, and see your kid happily chatting away with Alexa. Why does it seem like so many customer service voice assistants still do a terrible job of understanding basic English? Why haven’t these systems progressed, despite the fact that they’ve been in use at least 10 years, and despite the fact that we’re in a voice-computing renaissance exemplified by Amazon Echos and Google Home devices? There are some exceptions, but almost all Americans recently surveyed said they’ve experienced frustration when trying to communicate with a company using Interactive Voice Response (IVR) systems. The Apple executive responsible since 2012 for the (somewhat slow) development of Siri, Bill Stasior, has left the role, according to a report from The Information. It will be up to senior VP of machine learning and AI strategy John Giannandrea to appoint a replacement. The Information piece suggests Apple may have ousted Stasior to give Giannandrea more control over Siri. Apple poached Giannandrea from Google–where he led search and AI–in April of last year, in what many considered a coup. Gianandrea is a known name in AI circles. At Apple, he was was originally hired as chief of machine learning and AI strategy, but was promoted to senior VP later in the year, reporting directly to CEO Tim Cook. Siri has long been criticized for lagging behind the capabilities of assistants from rival tech giants like Microsoft, Amazon, and Google. Apple didn’t immediately respond to a request for confirmation and comment. … [Read more...] about Apple’s Siri chief has departed, and that may be a good thing

The cable TV ecosphere hasn’t been disrupted -- yet. Despite hopes that Apple Inc. would introduce an over-the-top live television service at its media event in San Francisco on Wednesday, the tech giant fell short of that goal with its latest version of Apple TV.Instead Tim Cook and company stood onstage at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium and unveiled an app-focused update that includes a new operating system, a touch-sensitive remote control and a voice-activated interface that works with Siri, among other features.
