When I finally got up the nerve to ask for my first raise after nearly two years on the job in the media industry, I knew that being at a larger company meant that getting a raise would require running my request up the corporate ladder. But after more than six months after making my initial ask, I hadn’t received an update. In the meantime, multiple colleagues had been given raises because they brought in outside offers that my organization then matched. advertisement advertisement My supervisor confirmed that the company culture had evolved to where employees could usually only get a pay bump after coming forward with another job offer. I explained I didn’t want to exit; I just wanted to be compensated for the increased responsibilities I had taken on. “This is a meditation, just with your body,” begins fitness instructor Taryn Toomey in her deep, gravelly voice, reminiscent of Kathleen Turner. “Feel what your mind is trying to tell you.” advertisement advertisement I am in The Class, billed as a “cathartic mind-body experience” by founder Toomey, who is leading the session in her Tribeca studio. The airy space is outfitted with marble counters, soothing neutral palettes, modern gold-plated fixtures, and wood floors embedded with a layer of rose quartz crystals. Tunes by Florence and the Machine and The XX set the pace of The Class’s routines. As instructed, I am squatting and breathing deeply as a chorus of Lululemon-clad attendees repeatedly shout, “Huh!” in unison. These affluent working women are using sound to (Toomey claims) harness and release energy, treating the class’s mix of cardio exercises, body conditioning, yoga, and meditation as a sort of therapy … [Read more...] about Is This Workout For Your Feelings What American Women Need Right Now?
It’s no secret that I love naps. In college and grad school, I carefully planned my courses to allow for a siesta. And one of the best things about working from home is that I can recharge my batteries some carefully timed midday shut-eye. While I have effectively built my entire life around napping, I’m fully aware that this isn’t that common. Most people aren’t able to get the sleep they need over the course of the day. advertisement advertisement This week, the British apparel company Vollebak has come to their rescue. The company released a jacket that doubles as a nap pod, called the Deep Sleep Cocoon, making it easier to sleep anywhere. But then again, Vollebak may be counting on the fact that it’s hard to put a price on sleep—particularly sleep on the go. Like many of the products in Vollebak’s line, this jacket was inspired by … [Read more...] about This $995 jacket is designed to help you sleep on long-haul flights
