COLOMBO (Reuters) - Sri Lanka's president on Friday appointed tycoon Dhammika Perera as minister for investment promotion, his office said in a statement, as the crisis-hit country struggles to find foreign exchange to import food, fuel and drugs. A major Sri Lankan investor who holds stakes in dozens of companies, Perera replaced President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's brother in parliament earlier this month after he stepped down. Basil Rajapaksa, the president's younger brother, previously served as finance minister. "Dhammika Perera is a very successful businessman and he has come out with several proposals on how Sri Lanka can emerge from this crisis," Sagara Kariyawasam, General Secretary of the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna party, told Reuters. "We will watch with optimism." Perera, one of the richest businessmen in Sri Lanka, has investments in companies spanning manufacturing, banking and finance, leisure, plantations and power generation. Sri Lanka to limit fuel for private vehicles as fuel suppliers delay shipments
COLOMBO, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka will not receive shipments of petrol, diesel and crude oil, scheduled for this week and next week, Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera said on Saturday. The minister said that suppliers have informed state-owned fuel importer and distributor Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) that they will not make the scheduled deliveries due to banking and logistic reasons. Wijesekera said public transportation, power generation and industries would be given priority until the next shipments arrive. Therefore, limited stocks of diesel and petrol will be distributed to a few gas stations throughout next week. The minister urged the general public not to queue up for fuel. He also said that refinery operations will also be halted until the next crude shipment arrives. "We are working with all new and existing suppliers. I apologize for the delay and inconvenience," he said. … [Read more...] about Sri Lanka to limit fuel for private vehicles as fuel suppliers delay shipments
Thailand News Today | “The Last Supper of the Prime Minister”
The next political challenge for Thai PM Prayut Chan-o-cha is next month when a censure motion is put to the lower house by opposition MPs. The debate is scheduled for July 18 – 22 and there is no certainty how the votes will eventually fall at this time. Renegade MPs, new political factions, the PM’s falling popularity, and a looming general election will all play a factor in the final result for Prayut and the ruling Palang Pracharat Party. Moving Forward Party MPs will be leading the charge, attacking the performance of the prime minister and 10 of his other leading ministers. This is the fourth such censure debate against the PM and government since the 2019 general election. They’ve so far survived all votes on the lower house floor, along purely party lines. The ruling Palang Pracharat coalition has a tenuous majority and relies on the 17 coalition partners to push through any legislation. The largest rumps of support come from the Democrats and Bhumjaithai, the … [Read more...] about Thailand News Today | “The Last Supper of the Prime Minister”
When it gets too hot for health
As the global temperature rises around the world, so does the risk of heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion and heatstroke. For example, over the past 30 years, extreme heat has claimed more lives in the United States than any other weather-related hazard, including flooding, tornadoes, hurricanes or lightning, according to the US National Weather Service. Experts at Mayo Clinic say it’s important to recognise the signs and symptoms of heat illnesses, and learn how to prevent them. Your body is like a car’s engine. If it starts to overheat, the warning light goes on – and that is heat exhaustion. “Which is where you feel nauseous or dizzy. “You just don’t feel right, and you’re sweating profusely,” says Mayo Clinic emergency medicine physician Dr Neha Raukar. Anyone at any age can suffer from heat exhaustion. High temperatures, particularly when paired with high humidity, are the primary cause. “Ways to prevent it include hydrating a lot, dressing appropriately … [Read more...] about When it gets too hot for health
Thailand News Today | Backlash over sloppy happy plant guidelines
The opposition will be going after the government for its botched happy plant decriminalisation and legalisation laws. Or, specifically, their lack of details and the loose ends left dangling for Thais and foreigners to navigate. Politics aside, the June 9 announcements about the C plant in Thailand were broadly misinterpreted to be a blanket legalisation of the plant and all of its derivatives. The actual details and legislation haven’t even been tabled in parliament for debate, so the opposition is now targeting the government over its botched announcements on, what some believe, is a crucial societal issue that requires a proper debate. The opposition parties, led by Pheu Thai and Move Forward, will likely focus on hot issues like underage addiction, school kids and drugs, illicit drug use in Thailand, perils of long-term use, dangers to society, among a myriad of topics. The topic also brings additional focus to the deputy PM and public health minister, Anutin … [Read more...] about Thailand News Today | Backlash over sloppy happy plant guidelines
‘Allow foreign-trained caregivers’
PETALING JAYA: An elderly care service association is urging the government to allow temporary entry of foreign workers trained in nursing and caregiving to address the shortage of such staff at elderly care homes nationwide. It says currently, there was an inadequate supply of locals to undertake the job as many of the previous caregivers consisted of nurses awaiting placements. They have since been called to service by government and private hospitals to handle the Covid-19 outbreak in Malaysia. Similarly, many locals are not interested in these jobs as they are akin to other 3D (dirty, dangerous and difficult) jobs, it said. Association for Residential Aged Care Operators (Agecope) president Delren Terrence Douglas said foreign workers trained in caregiving or nursing could be temporarily allowed to address the shortage faced by the industry. “For my home in Kedah, we had eight nurses prior to the pandemic but the number has since dwindled to only two for a home with 42 … [Read more...] about ‘Allow foreign-trained caregivers’

Dr Wee: Government doing its best to tackle global uncertainties
PETALING JAYA: The Government is doing its best to tackle the uncertainties brought about by several issues affecting the world and will strive to reduce the economic burden on the people, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (pic). "The world situation is not so stable now not only because of Covid-19, but also due to the Russia-Ukraine war and other major factors affecting the world. "The sharp rise in inflation is a major challenge facing the world, including Malaysia," said the Transport Minister. Malaysia, he said, was also facing the issue of inflation in food, which is influenced by the rising global food prices which are mostly the main input to local food products. "The Malaysian Family Government is doing its best to address this issue, including providing a subsidy of RM77.3bil for petrol, cooking oil, food and several critical sectors to lessen the burden of the people," he said.
