I always believe the stocks I buy will outperform the market, but I'm often wrong. For example, I had bullish reasons to buy shares of connected-fitness company Peloton Interactive ( NASDAQ:PTON ) , mobile-gaming platform company Skillz ( NYSE:SKLZ ) , and communications-platform-as-a-service (CPaaS) company Bandwidth ( NASDAQ:BAND ) . But these have actually been horrid investments and my biggest losers in 2021. Many investors believe I should just cut my losses. However, I'm optimistic these companies can overcome challenges and be winners with enough time. And in a worst-case scenario, I won't pay a high price for being wrong because of one simple portfolio-building trick -- I'll reveal the trick at the end. Image source: Getty Images. First, let's look at my losers I personally own 30 stocks in my retirement account. Many have been good investments. But the table below shows just how bad Peloton, Skillz, and Bandwidth have been since I bought them. … [Read more...] about These 3 Stocks Were My Biggest Losers in 2021. What happened Shares of low-code automation software platform Appian ( NASDAQ:APPN ) collapsed in an avalanche of selling Wednesday. As of 11:30 a.m. ET, Appian stock is down 6.5%. You can blame Barclays Capital for that. Image source: Getty Images. So what Barclays has been an Appian skeptic for some time, it should be noted. Prior to today, the analyst rated Appian stock underweight (i.e., sell) with a $90 price target. The banker continues to see Appian as a sell today. What's changed is its price target -- because this morning, Barclays cut that target nearly in half, and says Appian stock is worth only $47 a share. Appian has been a fine growth stock, you see. Last quarter, sales at the software company were up a solid 20%, and Barclays agrees that there are "no issues" with demand for the company's product. What worries this analyst is simply that it seems investors are no longer willing to pay insane multiples to sales for profitless software companies … [Read more...] about Why Appian Stock Just Crashed 6.5%

Today's video focuses on Advanced Micro Devices ( NASDAQ:AMD ) and four recent pieces of news affecting its stock price. One could be a reason to sell the stock, but the other three could be seen as reasons to hold or buy. Here are some highlights from the video. On Jan. 20, an analyst from Piper Sandler downgraded AMD's rating and decreased its price target. Analysts' price targets are not necessarily something I focus on as an investor. The main reason is that analysts' price targets are meant for the next 12 months, but my investment style is focused on multiple years. AMD has recently shared some positive news on its investors' relations website. On Jan. 12, it announced that Amazon ( NASDAQ:AMZN ) continues to expand its AMD Epyc processors offerings. On Jan. 19, it released information on its new graphics cards for workstation users, and it also released new entry-level graphics cards for gamers. AMD is scheduled to release its fourth quarter and … [Read more...] about AMD: 1 Reason to Sell and 3 Reasons to Buy
If you invest in small companies, you can pretty much expect some price volatility. Sales and earnings are less than predictable, and competition from larger peers can be fierce. If you want your investment in small stocks to be rewarding, you will want to diversify your bets and patiently waits out frequent storms. Three options to help with that diversity have had a bout of volatility in recent months. That's made shares of PubMatic ( NASDAQ:PUBM ) , LendingClub ( NYSE:LC ) , and Silvergate Capital ( NYSE:SI ) look like especially promising investment choices that are trading on the cheap at the moment. Image source: Getty Images. 1. With many growth stocks getting hit with one final sell-off in the final weeks of 2021, deals now abound. Thus, three Fool.com contributors made some stock purchases headed into the new year. The shopping list? A chip company transforms itself for the next generation of computing needs Nicholas Rossolillo (Marvell Technology Group): Not to be confused with Disney 's ( NYSE:DIS ) superhero franchise with a similar name (Marvel, not Mar-VELL), this suddenly emergent semiconductor designer is popping on all sorts of Wall Street analysts' radar as of late. And for good reason. After a string of acquisitions over the last few years, … [Read more...] about 3 Best Stocks We Bought for 2022
Growth stocks in the tech sector have become one of the most significant victims of the recent market sell-off. The Nasdaq Composite is trading down roughly 10% from its all-time high and funds driven by growth-oriented tech stocks like the ARK Innovation ETF have lost approximately half of their value over the last year. However, this decline has also offered investors the opportunity to buy big growth names at a substantial discount. DigitalOcean ( NYSE:DOCN ) and Lemonade ( NYSE:LMND ) are two such stocks that might just be worth buying right now. Let's find out a bit more about them. Image source: Getty Images. 1. DigitalOcean DigitalOcean has carved out a lucrative niche by targeting small- and medium-size enterprises (SMEs), a market ignored by the biggest names in tech such as Amazon and Microsoft . Cloud computing for the little guy is a big deal as SMEs make up 99.7% of all businesses in the U.S., according to the Small Business Administration. … [Read more...] about 2 Supercharged Tech Stocks to Buy Without Any Hesitation
Peloton Interactive ( NASDAQ:PTON ) was the ultimate "stay-at-home" stock in 2020, as more people rushed to buy at-home fitness equipment to stay active. But the return to normal routines has caused some confusion about Peloton's growth trajectory. The stock has acted like it's in a pinball machine, bouncing all over the place. After soaring to a high of $171 in early 2021, the share price has sunk all the way to around $31 at the moment. Should investors buy, sell, or hold? With the share price approaching the $30 level, the valuation is starting to look very tempting. After all, low valuations can set the stage for market-beating returns, as they did when Peloton was trading around this same level two years ago. Here's why it's time to take a second look at Peloton. Image source: Peloton Interactive. The opportunity is still there Peloton's stock price and revenue growth went parabolic in calendar 2020, but that is long gone. The company may never see those … [Read more...] about Buy, Sell, or Hold Peloton Stock at $31 a Share?
Last year was great for investors who owned a Nasdaq index fund , but not every stock shared in the gains. Several high-profile constituents suffered big losses, especially some stay-at-home tech stocks. Sometimes a steep sell-off is the best time to buy -- you can profit in the long term from the market's overreaction to a solid stock. Is now a good time to buy three of last year's worst performers? 1. Peloton Peloton Interactive ( NASDAQ:PTON ) dropped 76% in 2021. The company endured some self-inflicted setbacks, but market conditions didn't help at all. The stock came into the year near an all-time high, having ridden a wave of investor optimism around stay-at-home stocks. Peloton rose from $20 in the coronavirus crash to $150 by the end of 2020. That momentum wound up being unsustainable. Peloton warned that supply chain disruptions could affect profitability and prevent it from meeting customer demand in some cases. This outlook agitated investors, and the stock … [Read more...] about Are the Nasdaq’s 3 Worst-Performing Stocks Ready to Bounce Back in 2022?
Earlier this week, the Case-Shiller 20-city home price index data for October was released, and it showed a significant 18.4% jump compared to the same month last year. That follows a strong 19.1% result in September, and it highlights how consistently robust U.S. housing has been in 2021. The 20-city index measures residential real estate prices across 20 major metropolitan areas, including New York, Los Angeles, Detroit, and Chicago, in an attempt to offer a broad overview of prices across the country. October's result is well above the index's 10-year average of 7.16%. Stock market investors might be wondering how to gain exposure to this rapid growth in home prices, and innovative real estate company Redfin ( NASDAQ:RDFN ) might be the answer.
