Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin At this point, it is not exactly a shock when any video game demands that you be online at all times, even if you’re playing single player. It’s an annoyance, but it’s also a bit par for the course with most games these days. Enter Redfall, where despite the ability to play solo rather than with a co-op squad, the game needs to always be online. That decision was of course, criticized, but the surprising thing here is that Arkane may actually be attempting to change it, either before or after release (probably after). Speaking to Eurogamer , game director Harvey Smith had a surprising take on the whole thing, as he says dismissing gamer concerns over the issue “lacks empathy,” and even though yes, almost everything in the gaming industry is online now, that he understands where people are coming from. Smith says that they are actively working on changing this at some point, even if he’s not fully making a … [Read more...] about Xbox’s ‘Redfall’ Is Trying To Kill Its Much-Hated Always Online Requirement

Given What We Don’t Know, Blocking Fully Online Degrees Was Right Call
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Not quite a month ago, the University of California system officially banned awarding fully online degrees by requiring students to spend approximately one year of a four-year degree in classes that are at least 50% on campus and taught in a classroom. It’s a big development for a few reasons. The first is that University of California system is big – encompassing ten campus schools and nearly 300,000 students. By enrollment, it’s larger than the three biggest stand-alone schools put together. The system also includes some big brand names such as Berkeley, UC Davis and UCLA. So, when it says, “no, we will not offer an online degree,” it matters. ADVERTISEMENT The second big reason is that California’s intentionality in affirmatively barring fully online degrees may underline a thoughtful debate the education community has yet to fully have on the comparative quality of online versus in-person learning. Grocery, Home Furnishings Continue To Drive Ecommerce Growth
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Online purchases of groceries and home furnishings surged during the first years of the pandemic, and those categories have continued to show the strongest ecommerce growth into this year, according to data released today by Adobe Analytics. Grocery and furniture and home furnishings had the biggest growth in 2022 of the four top ecommerce categories, Adobe reported. Online spending on grocery rose 10.8% in 2022, to $86.8 billion. You can’t stop generative AI fraud—but you can keep the criminals guessing
We’ve all experienced identity fraud in some way. At some point in your life, somebody has tried to be you. It’s hardly the sincerest form of flattery—more like a huge headache. The term identity fraud dates back almost 60 years. Back then, it was less prevalent (not less dangerous) because it was done manually. Think of someone splicing a photo into a stolen passport. Digital fraud is vastly more sophisticated—and commonplace. Even the most privacy-conscious leave a data trail that serves as ammunition for identity theft. Each day, more of you is distributed online. Think of the credit cards you own and how many accounts you’ve created on various platforms. In response, we’ve learned to be vigilant and wary. We even tolerate multifactor security. Just as we were making headway, though, here comes generative AI . Deepfakes are not new. What’s changed is that technologies of deception became commodities, turning them into convenient mass weapons for criminals. … [Read more...] about You can’t stop generative AI fraud—but you can keep the criminals guessing
The real reason more women and people of color suffer from imposter syndrome
When you’re growing up, you progressively get more confident in your ability to do difficult things: read a harder book, play a tougher sport, or join the conversation at the grown-ups’ table. But anyone who’s been a teenager knows that learning and confidence curves are not linear—nor do they always run in parallel. In fact, for many people, the more you progress, the more you start to question your achievements. “Is it really because I’m talented? Or is it just luck, over-preparation, or even privilege?” somebody . I didn’t necessarily question whether I belonged, but I definitely felt intimidated by the atmosphere and the accomplishments of all of my classmates. It felt like everyone was always one step ahead of me, which led to a lot of self-questioning at night while living away from home at the age of 15. When I went to Yale, I encountered a variation on this theme. I always had this thought that people perceived me as a basketball player first and a student … [Read more...] about The real reason more women and people of color suffer from imposter syndrome

Southeast Asia workers vulnerable to phishing
MANILA, Philippines – Almost one in five employees in Southeast Asia clicks on suspicious emails designed to trick users into giving out sensitive and personal information, according to Kaspersky, noting these workers usually overlook the signs of a phishing scam. The cybersecurity firm, in a recent statement, said that about 16 percent to 18 percent of the employees in the region “tend not to notice pitfalls hidden in emails devoted to corporate issues and online delivery problem notifications.” These emails are usually about reservation confirmations from a booking service, notification about an order placement and even those coming from a supposed IKEA announcement. “It’s interesting to see companies being targeted by financial phishing but we have to remember here that businesses, at their core, are still made up of humans,” Kaspersky general manager for Southeast Asia Yeo Siang Tiong said. “Phishing is a type of social engineering attack. It’s Time To Give NBA Franchises Some Breathing Room
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Denver Nuggets caught a lot of flack for losing four straight games to mediocre opponents a few weeks ago, with the discussion inevitably getting intertwined with the MVP candidacy of Nikola Jokić. What seems to be forgotten, however, was the fact that the Nuggets were just coming off eight wins in nine games, as well as the fact that the team isn't exactly in dire need of going all-out this late in the season. In fact, championship contenders - an umbrella the Nuggets fall in under - need to at some point cut corners for the sake of durability. The NBA Playoffs aren't over in mere days. It's a two-month competitive extravaganza where players often shut off communication with much of the outside world, and are rarely available for anything but traveling, practices, games, and mandatory media sessions. Asking teams - especially those that are locks to get into the postseason - to go hard in the late stages of the … [Read more...] about It’s Time To Give NBA Franchises Some Breathing Room
How You Can Financially Thrive And Survive A Layoff
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Spring is in the air–and so, apparently, are corporate layoffs. Companies including Microsoft Corp, Amazon, Meta, Pepsi, Boeing, Disney and Goldman Sachs Group have cut thousands of jobs. The information sector, which includes many tech workers, saw employment decline for the third straight month, by 25,000. Finance and insurance, which are affected by rising interest rates, saw a decline of 10,000 jobs to 6.7 million. Wall Street economists began 2023 anticipating a recession by midyear. If that happens, layoffs would almost certainly increase. I have some advice on important steps to take now, even before you get that dreaded layoff notice. Get organized– As soon as you suspect that a layoff is in the picture, start analyzing your finances, medical needs and job skills. That includes looking at your spending to see how you can cut back. If you don’t already follow a budget, you can get started with … [Read more...] about How You Can Financially Thrive And Survive A Layoff
