There are two main paths for commercializing a new product idea. At some point, you're going to need to decide which one you want to take. Some product ideas are clearly a better fit for one path, but more often than not, the decision is a matter of personal preference. I speak from experience, having achieved success doing both. For most of my career, I utilized the licensing business model to transform ideas in my head into products on the shelf. When I had the idea to change the shape of guitar picks, I experienced the ecstasy and the agony of venturing by starting and growing a business to bring it to life. These two paths are very different, and each has pros and cons. In our society, venturing gets all the glory. To venture a new product onto the market is to go into business for yourself -- meaning start a company, likely raise money, and do all of the necessary research and development, prototyping, manufacturing, marketing, sales, distribution, fulfillment, … [Read more...] about Should You Venture or License Your Invention Idea?

The Center for Reproductive Rights (CRR) worked with Boies Schiller Flexner LLP and Ellie Schilling to represent the abortion clinic, according to the outlet. Russia slips into historic default as sanctions muddy next steps
- A + A (June 27): Russia defaulted on its external sovereign bonds for the first time in a century, the culmination of ever-tougher Western sanctions that shut down payment routes to overseas creditors. For months, Russia had found paths around the penalties imposed after the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine. But at the end of the day on Sunday, the grace period on about US$100 million of trapped interest payments due May 27 expired, a deadline considered an “Event of Default” if missed. The route to this point has been far from normal, as Russia has the resources to pay its bills — and tried to do so — but was blocked by the sanctions. Those restrictions also mean there’s huge uncertainty about what comes next, and about how investors can go about getting their money. “With Russia benefiting from the high price of its energy exports, it clearly has both the means and the desire to pay its foreign debt,” said Giles Coghlan, chief analyst at HYCM Group. It’s a … [Read more...] about Russia slips into historic default as sanctions muddy next steps

Credit Suisse convicted in historic money-laundering case
- A + A ZURICH/GENEVA (June 27): Credit Suisse Group AG was convicted of failing to prevent money laundering by a Bulgarian cocaine trafficker, in the first ever criminal conviction of a major Swiss lender in the country’s history. The verdict, in which a former relationship manager at the bank was also convicted on money laundering charges, was handed down by Switzerland’s top criminal court on Monday afternoon. The woman was given a 20-month suspended prison sentence, while Credit Suisse faces a fine of 2 million Swiss francs (US$2.1 million) and was also hit with a claim of 19 million francs, equivalent to the amount the bank allowed to be laundered. The judgment is another blow to the tarnished reputation of Credit Suisse, which had argued the crimes date to an era when compliance standards were less stringent. It has been struggling with a series of scandals that have sent its shares to near-record lows, and may face a second criminal indictment in an … [Read more...] about Credit Suisse convicted in historic money-laundering case

Opinion: The aftershocks of America’s abortion earthquake will be felt for decades
(CNN) Following the US Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, CNN Opinion asked a group of contributors to weigh in on the cultural, legal and political ramifications of this monumental legal opinion undoing nearly 50 years of federal abortion protection. The views expressed in these commentaries are those of the authors. SE Cupp: What politicians get wrong about the abortion debate I'm deeply worried for our country. Read More No matter where you stand on the issue -- I'm pro-life but do not support a ban on abortions -- this ruling represents a seismic shift in American life as most of us knew it. I'm 43, and Roe is older than I am. There are more people alive today who have never known an America without Roe than there are people who lived without it. Stripping away what many women have only known as a right for nearly 50 years, without putting anything in its place is dangerous. Criminalizing … [Read more...] about Opinion: The aftershocks of America’s abortion earthquake will be felt for decades
Why Finland Is So Happy (and the U.S. Is So Depressed)
For the past two years, the United Nations has ranked Finland as the world's happiest country. The U.S. has never scored in the top 10 since the index was launched in 2011, and in 2019 it plummeted to 19th. While Finland seems perennially chirpy, the U.S. is seeing growing rates of depression, drug addiction, and suicide . Here are six reasons that residents of Finland (7.1 percent of whom are immigrants, BTW) are so happy when compared with their American counterparts: 1. Finns pay higher taxes but see more results. According to the conservative think tank the Brookings Institute, Finland collects 44 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP) in taxes versus the 26 percent of GDP that the U.S. collected in 2015. (For comparison, Denmark collects 46 percent and Mexico 17 percent.) So taxes are relatively high in Finland, which you'd think would tend to reduce overall happiness. However, higher taxes don't seem to bother the Finns, for two reasons: … [Read more...] about Why Finland Is So Happy (and the U.S. Is So Depressed)
‘A Quarter Of A Person’: Whoopi Goldberg Claims Clarence Thomas ‘Better Hope They Don’t Come’ For Him
“The View” co-host Whoopi Goldberg said Associate Justice Clarence Thomas “better hope they don’t come” for his rights after the Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade. The panel suggested that the overturning of Roe v. Wade has set the precedent for other cases establishing rights under the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment — interracial and gay marriage, contraception — are now under attack. Goldberg said Thomas , who joined the majority in overturning Roe, could lose his right to be married to his wife, Ginni. “I appreciate everybody’s religion, but I do not subscribe to your religion. I don’t ask you to subscribe to mine,” Goldberg began. “And you do not have the right, based on your religious beliefs, to tell me, because what’s next, as Clarence Thomas is signaling, they’re going to get rid of contraception. Do you understand, sir? No, because you don’t have to use it!” “We were not in the Constitution either,” Goldberg continued. “We were not even people in the … [Read more...] about ‘A Quarter Of A Person’: Whoopi Goldberg Claims Clarence Thomas ‘Better Hope They Don’t Come’ For Him
