After more than 350 on-air deals and eight seasons of tears, triumphs , and tense negotiations, Shark Tank is about to celebrate a new, nine-figure milestone. In an episode slated to air tonight, the celebrity investors are expected to offer a deal that puts their total investment outlay at more than $100 million--a serious landmark for the investment show that wasn't an immediate hit. As for the entrepreneur who helps the Tank land its new high-water mark, nothing is known, other than that he or she is a Millennial. Also, to be sure, there's no guarantee that that deal will stick. Nearly half of deals inked on Shark Tank fall apart after taping, according to research conducted by Forbes . For a variety of reasons--say a shark backs out or changes the terms of the deal in a way that irks the entrepreneur-- deals often don't come to fruition . And, of course, some deals are just rejected outright. In 2015, the Kang sisters said no to billionaire … [Read more...] about ‘Shark Tank’ Officially Offers to Invest $100 Million. A ‘Shark Tank’ Casting Producer on the 2 Things You Need to Nail a Pitch
A line of about 50 people--most of them holding props or suitcases of products--snaked outside an entrance to New York TechDay , a networking and showcasing event for startups held on Tuesday. Some were in suits, others donned professional uniforms like white medical coats, but they all had one thing in common: They wanted to be on Shark Tank . "When you show up and see everybody in line, you think, 'What do they have, too?' It's a lot of competition," says Melanie A. O'Neil, the founder and president of the woodworking company Rustic Marlin , who was preparing to audition with her husband. More than 300 entrepreneurs signed up to audition for season nine of ABC's hit show, but Mindy Zemrak, the supervising casting producer for Shark Tank , says there could be as many as 400 with drop ins. While there's no secret ingredient to nailing a pitch and making it to the next round, here are two ways to get the judges' attention. 1. Get excited … [Read more...] about A ‘Shark Tank’ Casting Producer on the 2 Things You Need to Nail a Pitch
How This Kombucha Entrepreneur Got $350,000 From Barbara Corcoran and Sara Blakely on ‘Shark Tank’
Even Mark Cuban gets out-sharked from time to time. On Sunday's episode of Shark Tank , Cuban was preparing an offer for entrepreneur Kate Field, whose at-home kombucha brewing kit has generated $3.2 million in lifetime sales, but before Cuban could speak up, Field accepted an investment from two other sharks. Barbara Corcoran and guest shark and Spanx founder Sara Blakely offered Field $350,000 in exchange for 10 percent of The Kombucha Shop, which Field instantly accepted. The $350,000 will be split between $200,000 of equity and a $150,000 line of credit. "Normally people at least give me a shot," Cuban said when asked why he waited to make Field an offer. The Kombucha Shop's at-home brewing kit sells for $45 and includes a reusable glass jar and all the ingredients necessary to make one-gallon batches of the fermented tea drink. Most kombucha beverages typically sell for between $3 and $5 per 16-ounce bottle. Field expects to generate between $1.6 million to … [Read more...] about How This Kombucha Entrepreneur Got $350,000 From Barbara Corcoran and Sara Blakely on ‘Shark Tank’
Layoffs, restructuring, slowdown: India’s edtech firms are struggling post-pandemic
When the government announced a vaccination programme for 12-14-year olds earlier this year, Neeta Singh (name changed), an educator at one of India’s biggest edtech unicorns, was excited as she thought she would be back in the classroom after almost two years. Singh said she was very keen to get back to her previous employer, a tutoring company, despite the lower compensation as she wanted to get out of the ‘extremely toxic’ culture at the edtech unicorn she had worked at for almost 15 months. “I am a single mother of two and I cannot stop working as both my kids are still in school. The local tuition centre I was working at had asked us to look for different jobs in March 2020, when the government announced the first lockdown,” said Singh. “Back then e-learning platforms were offering huge packages so I accepted it. I thought working from home would be better as I would be able to manage things better. But my incentives and job security were linked to the number of classes, … [Read more...] about Layoffs, restructuring, slowdown: India’s edtech firms are struggling post-pandemic
Air India reorganising itself under Tatas; won’t comment on A350 aircraft order: Airbus CCO
Air India (Representative image) Air India is clearly reorganising itself under the ”able stewardship” of the Tata Group and wants to invest in new planes to regain international passenger market share, the Chief Commercial Officer of Airbus said here on Sunday. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the annual general meeting of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) held here, Christian Scherer was asked whether Air India had finalised the A350 aircraft order with Airbus. ”I will not comment on that,” the Chief Commercial Officer of the European Aerospace company said in response. His remarks came after it was reported last week that the Tata Group-owned Air India has decided to procure its maiden batch of wide-bodied A350 aircraft from Airbus and the first plane is likely to be delivered to the airline by March 2023. However, it was not immediately clear how many A350 aircraft will be purchased by Air India. ”Air India is clearly reorganising itself … [Read more...] about Air India reorganising itself under Tatas; won’t comment on A350 aircraft order: Airbus CCO
Advice From the 23-Year-Old Who Said No to Mark Cuban
What would you do if you were chosen to appear on the ABC reality show "Shark Tank," and then Mark Cuban offered to invest $200,000 in your company? If you were Derek Pacque, the 23-year-old founder of CoatChex , you'd turn him down. The Idea CoatChex was born when Pacque, an entrepreneurship student at Indiana University, was told to come up with 10 pet peeves. "One was wearing my coat to the bar and not having anything to do with it," he says. His aggravation level peaked one night when he hid his coat in an out-of-the-way place only to find it had been stolen when he returned. When he asked bar owners why they didn't offer coat checks, they told him it was too messy, and too much of a hassle with patrons often losing tickets or leaving without their checked items. "So I said, do you mind if I set something up?" Pacque recalls. "I'll deal with the customers and the hassles, I'll get out when you don't need me, and I'll give you a percentage of … [Read more...] about Advice From the 23-Year-Old Who Said No to Mark Cuban
Chris Sacca: If You’re 100 Percent Mentally Healthy, You Shouldn’t Be an Entrepreneur
Uber , Twitter , Stripe , Instagram: Chris Sacca has made some pretty good bets on startups. And in the course of making those bets, the sometime Shark Tank star has developed some reliable rules of thumb for identifying the entrepreneurs worth getting behind. "Having done this for a lot of years now and having a lot of data points, I can just tell," he said in an on-stage interview at the Collision Conference in New Orleans Thursday. "I can smell it on them, whether they're going to go the distance or not." Confidence, as you might expect, looms large, but it's "a confidence without needing to sell," Sacca told CNN's Laurie Segall. "Our best founders, whether it's Travis [Kalanick of Uber], Evan [Williams of Twitter and Medium], or Kevin Systrom [of Instagram], they just believe in the inevitability of their success." When things don't go as planned, he said, "they don't wallow, they just know it's going to work out." Kalanick's vision for Uber was already … [Read more...] about Chris Sacca: If You’re 100 Percent Mentally Healthy, You Shouldn’t Be an Entrepreneur

Not planning to inoculate children below 12 years for COVID: NTAGI on US vaccinating children under five
(Image: Reuters) India is not considering lowering the eligibility of COVID-19 vaccine administration in children below 12 years, an official from the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (NTAGI) told Moneycontrol. NTAGI is India’s vaccine think tank, an apex advisory body on immunisation, which provides guidance and advice to the Union health ministry. “We have not considered vaccinating kids below the age group of 12 years. The uptake of COVID vaccine in the age group above 12-8 years is tepid and we are just focusing on the population that is susceptible to severe infection,” said an official who is part of NTAGI, asking not to be named. Responding to a query related to the US starting COVID vaccination for children aged six months to five years, the NTAGI official said, “The Indian government is in no hurry to administer COVID-19 vaccines to children below 12 years of age.” Also read: Oncologists welcome FDA’s proposal to limit nicotine in cigarettes, … [Read more...] about Not planning to inoculate children below 12 years for COVID: NTAGI on US vaccinating children under five
Five Creative Ways Airlines Are Addressing The Pilot Shortage
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Is there a pilot shortage, or not? Depending on who you ask, you can get different answers . Flights are getting cancelled due to a lack of pilots, and small cities are losing service as a result. Over time this problem will correct itself with changes in pay, new training, and perhaps regulatory reform. None of these solutions will fix this summer, however. With strong demand for air travel both domestically and internationally, the airline industry has a challenge to make this summer work. To address this near-term challenge, airlines have started to adopt some creative tactics. Not all of these may work, but they get to the heart of the matter - finding more pilots quickly.
